Do You Get To Choose If You Follow God or Not?

I got another question from a follower of Jesus, this person asks if you get to choose to follow God or not? I believe you do, because God gave you free will. You must choose wisely, but you get to choose. His arguement was that you dont get to choose because if you dont make the right choice you go to hell, however that is just it, you choose whatever your consequences are. Like a child, you know what is right from wrong in your home, because your parents have told you and they have given you a list of consequences that could happen if you should choose to go the wrong path. The child then gets to decide and has to live with the consequences of his or her actions. That is why I feel this way, what do you think?

I don't think God has given us free will. He has given us the right to choose and told us ahead of time what the consequences of our choices would be. Your friends argument doesn't make any sense. It's like saying, because the game show contestant chose the wrong door, he didn't get to choose. The difference though, is that we know what's behind each door.

The right to choose is free will.

Will means wish or desire and free means without cost. So free will sounds like getting what you desire without it costing you anything. The right to choose is the privilege of selecting for yourself. How could God give us free will since we know there's a price to pay if the choices we make are wrong?

And that is called, "the right to choose."

How can God give free will and consequences at the same time to the same person? You have just said that Even though God has given us free will, we get to live with the consequences of wrongful living. If we have God given free will to make our choices, why would God differentiate between the good and the bad? You have just said that the wrong Path sends you to hell! If that's the case, then rightful living sends you to Heaven. Now that's consequences! If this is Christianity, I don't need any!

Your daughter rebelled because you were Preaching Your Will to her. Free will, would have let her choose, and THEN Experience the consequences. You were shoving YOUR will down her throat - is it any wonder she rebelled? Then she tried to teach you a lesson in child rearing by staying out, but it Looks like You Didn't Learn!

Free Will and Consequences. My daughter is 17 years old, I told her to come home by 11 tonight (the law) I told her if she did not come home, the car will be off limits, and not going to the mall with friends (the explanation of consequences) She decided to stay out at the friends house instead of coming home when I told her to (free will) She came home at 3:30 in the morning and was punished, no car, no friends. (consequences)

God did not give us free will. He gave us the right to choose.

You are correct. What your " follower of Jesus" doesn't understand that there are many choices and paths to the higher being I call G-d and he calls Jesus.and that trying to bully people into his path will have the opposite effect. I'm proud not to be christian and I will proudly go to a Christian hell than a Christian heaven. Because for me they will one in a same. How am I suppose to fit in when I don't follow the same path as all the others? How am I suppose to be happy being an outsider?

I can live with that. G-d Knows that the Only way I can get into the Christian heaven is to lie. and I won't lie to G-d!

The choice you make is your own. However the Christian Heaven of paradise will not go away because you dont want to be there, you just wont if you choose to just not be there. The thing is with free choice or will, you are free to go anyway you choose. When God comes he is not looking for mans definition of Christianity, he is looking for his church and all of its members, so that they may be judged worthy to sit by his side in Heaven, those who dont accept the consequences.

Hi pastorkayte, I don't think there is much choice in the Christian religion, not only that but no one knows if Christians are right or not. The followers of Islam are for example, just as convinced that they are right. Personally I feel that no one religion is right but that all have enough of the truth if one will follow it. Do as I say or go to hell is not much of a choice. Jesus however, didn't say that. Blessings.

It is not that way at all, it is choose to follow, and you will have everlasting life. The point Jesus made was should you as a Christian choose to follow him, you would be given everlasting life. He said that if you believe in him, you shall not perish, but you will have everlasting life.

Before I go on I just want to point out before becoming a Christian I was a Moslem, however, I was upset when I discovered that many of them dont believe everything they say. I would also like to point out that I was very upset about learning the story of Muhammed and all the really bad things about him. I converted later to Christianity, after years of looking for proof of both religions.

thats is right, with our free will we have the right to choose which way should we go.i myself have decided to go a different path which i think and i believe is right since we ave to choose what we wanted to be in the future and with that i face the consequences on my actions if ever i have decided wrongfully.anyway i chose to follow God in a different way but still im following him less of course of the traditional approach of everyone.

I dont know if how you choose to follow God is the issue but that you put your trust and faith in him, know that he is the way, and believe in his son. Otherwise I don't think that you need all the bells and whistles to follow God, you need a believing heart, be a decent person and choose of your own free will to be a follower of Christ.

You do know that people use Christian interchangeably however a Christian is and always will be a follower of the Christ. However, some people lump all people who follow God into one category, that is not really the true meaning. A Christian again is someone who follows the Christ. Which by the way is Jesus Christ.

Being a Christian all that is already included i dont think someone wont be called a Christian if they dont put their trust and faith in Him.and believe that Jesus Christ is way,the truth and the life.and by using my free will i am following his ONLY way.

There are some in this world who believe that we're all children of God and as a result won't suffer any type of eternal punishment no matter what choices have been made. Unfortunately, that simply isn't the truth. First, we're not all children of God. Jesus is God's only begotten child and only those who have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are adopted into God's family and are the only ones who are heir to the promise. Secondly, God's word says very clearly what one must do to inherit eternal life. Of course the choice belongs to the individual. God is not willing that any should perish, but He's not going to force anyone to accept His Son if they don't want to. If He did, we'd be nothing more than puppets and what would have been the point in creating us? God's word tells us what He expects from us, but He gives us the freedom to choose, some to eternal life and others to eternal separation from God.

Very true but I only disagree with one statement, every thing else is true. I believe we are all children of God, however like any family, there are many who disobey but they are still his creation.

If one is a child of God, he/she should have the same characteristics of God the Father. Unfortunately there are some whose characteristics are more like their father, the devil. Read the third chapter of First John.

That's a lot of simplifying, it seems like. The easy answer is yes, we do have a choice, of course. If we didn't have a choice, then everyone would be doing the same thing, wouldn't they? If there were no choice, then only one religion would exist, everyone would be faithful, and that'd be the end of it. The complicated part, to me, comes when you start talking about consequences. If your choice is: follow God or you will go to hell, then you're working from the assumption that people who aren't following God truly believe they will go to hell. Which isn't necessarily true, because most people of other religions believe that their religion is right and whatever their religion promises will be given to them. Thus, saying that it is like a child who knows right from wrong and chooses isn't really applicable. I realize that the Bible says that we are all God's children, but human being don't necessarily grow up being taught or believing the same things. So saying that everyone knows that following God is "right" rubs me the wrong way.

Here is the thing, I live in the United States, everyone whether they are Christian or not, know the Gospel, because they either have been dragged off to church as children, or they have heard stories on television, and accidently watched a television evangelist, as well as through their kindly old gramma who says boy (or girl) you need to listen and read one of these tiny books so you can get the ideas of the bible. My work is not about those who have not heard the word, we are talking about those who have learned the truth and choose not to come to the Lord.

Your parents won't fry you in a fiery pit for eternity as your religion says God will. Hmmm??? Pretty tough character, your God.Is it really God?? I think not. God will leave no child behind. You couldn't leave your children behind no matter what they did, could you? We do have total freedom of choice but the parameters of our life are set by God. We will all know God's unconditional love that heals all hurt. You can choose to believe in God or not. Believing has never been important to God, however kiddies must go to school. That one we have little choice over but it is always for our own good.

I want to follow what you said except it is a little all over the place. First of all of us is a child of God. No child will be left behind by God however, thinking adults who are able minded are the ones who have the choice of whether to be a believer or not. The way people look as God is from human terms. He does not need your approval, if you dont like it or dont believe will not change what he said. Its like this, if you decide you dont like the law that says you cant take other peoples possessions, just because you disagree and make a fuss and spout reasons why this is unjust, doesnt mean that if you are caught stealing that the law will change for you. God will and shall in the future expect you to make a concious decision of whether or not you want to follow him. If you decide not to then you are saying you dont want to and you accept the consequences. Accept this or not, whatever. No one now or ever has gone to hell because judgement day has not come yet, so no one has actually felt the wrath of God,Yet! However one day we all face judgment and on that day you will have your answer to who God is.

I don't believe in God. So I don't believe God, Jesus or anyone else has ever asked me what my decision is going to be. I believe that your environment is the most decisive factor on whether you're choosing to believe in God. Parents who don't believe in God aren't likely to tell their children to believe in God or to have such an effect on their children that they decide to believe in God themselves.

Man you dont believe in much is you dont believe in anyone who asks you to make a decision. If you go to the car dealership to buy a car do you tell the person selling it to you, oh just give me anyone because I dont like anyone who asks you to make a decision. However, whether or not you believe in God is up to you. The point here is that you choose. You have the choice, and any consequences that go along with it. If you walked down a crowded street and someone said there is a man dying and needs your help. And you are told that that man looked like your father, then asks do you want to save him. Then all you have to do is believe that I can save him, you decide. How would your decision making skills work then.

Of course everybody should get a choice on what religious beliefs they decide to accept. God gave everybody free-will after all, so they should have the complete freedom to believe and put faith into whatever they like.

Absolutely, you have the right to choose whatever path you take, while I or another may think your path is wrong, your path is your own. I may if I truly care for you, share with you the benefit of knowing God and what his word says, but the Bible says to be discerning, which means dont believe what some peple say is true, believe in your heart that what you think is true is so. The truth is for me that God in his Grace has saved me by sending his son to die for my sins and his spirit to guide me on my way. Either way, he has made provisions for me to live by and I wholeheartedly made plans to do just that.

To make the people happy there are do and donot or good and bad are taught from the childhood in the name of GOD. Also our minds are two , one would say to do it and other mind would say not to do it. The teaching from the child hood helps us to do good things to get good thing in life or else we will go to hell. But in reality also it happens so. Any how there is one above us watching our deed and so we should do good. In Military offices the words are written " do not brag , even walls have ears "

First of all I dont know about you but I was not taught from childhood what was good only in the name of God, I was taught what was right and wrong from my parents. Now God doesnt care whether or not I did good things or lived a great life, instead he look into your heart and find that you are a great person who happens to beleive

I believe in God, but I also believe in the great spirit which is the same in a sense, the only difference in my religion and going into a catholic church or any other church is that I pray to the great spirit, and that I believe in mother earth whom bore us, and I believe in protecting our earth. What church out there tells us how to protect our earth? Instead if the world was coming to an end most people would run to the church and pray that God save them. God wants us to help ourselves, not expect everything from him. This is why I choose my path when I became an ordained minister. It was to make sure that I could teach people they don't have to rely on a church to protect them, they dont have to rely on God to protect them, that they can do it themselves. That they need to learn that there is more then just a church to live by.

Only problem I see here, even with your great spirit and I am not saying that part is wrong for your because you have free will is that people do need to be a part of God's church whether they go to church or not. What people dont understand is that they were told by God that he will one day return for his church. He did not say which religion they should be, he did not say whether they called themselves Christians or not, and he did not say they needed to even go to a man's church. What he did say was that they needed to believe in him, follow his commandments, and believe in his son. No matter how many ways we say it or religions there are he has said so.
