School for kids on Saturdays???

Canada

Our Quebec Provincial Government just came up with this plan to open schools on Saturdays. Im not sure of all the details, but it has some parents screaming murder now. They say that it'll push some kids to drop out of school even more. We already have a problem here with dropouts. I dont have children, so Im not sure what to think. What do you think about this? Is it a good idea to have kids go to school for 6 days instead of 5?

I don't have kids, but I disagree with this decision. I think the government should plan on motivating the kids to study at home during the weekends. Also if the reason for this is because of the bad results, I think this is probably going to make them worse.

I think so too. If I were in school and they'd have me go on a Saturday, Id make it hell for them haha. The decision must come from someone working in a very small office with NO window. A very grouchy person who hates kids. Thanks for your input Techgurl

That is the worst decision ever made by any government. No kid will go to school on a saturday, no matter what. That is going to cause a lot of problems. I think that the parents and teachers need to go and sit with this wonderfull, intellegant person, who came up with this stupid idea and try explaining to him or her, what problems this will cause.

I saw this on tv, the talk about making it a 6 day week. There was one hell of a debate, people calling in, parents not happy at all. They say if the law passes, it'll come into effect this coming September. I think parents will revolt with this decision. It doesnt make any sense as far as Im concerned and I can tell from all the answers here that Im not the only one thinking this way. Thank you for sharing your opinion Saphrina.

I'd be concerned about the drop out rate, but also concerned about what this does for the time families actually get to spend together too! I know some people work on Saturdays too, but for a lot of people in office situations or whatever, spending time with their family mostly happens on the weekend. So sending kids to school an extra day would cut into that as well. I think even kids that enjoy school would get a little burned out, too. It's stressful these days, with all the pressure to go to college and decide on jobs and everything at an early age... it just seems like one more thing to worry about for kids, you know?

Hi Lecanis, You're right, it'll be an added stress not only on the kids but also on the rest of the family. Most families only have the weekend to be together for activities and now if they take this away, I fear not only the kids will be stressed out but the parents also. Im thinking they might feel guilty for not having quality time with their kids. Thank you!!

I am finishing my school at the moment and I think that 6 days of school would be far too much for children. Weekend must be 2 days long, so people could rest from stress and work and perhaps finish their undone tasks they have at school. These 2 days of weekend are also the days when children can regenerate their energy for the new week. I am totally against such plan.

Hello Biomechanoid, So you know what it would be like to go to school for 6 days since you've just finished school. Yes Im thinking added stress and no time to play is not a good idea. And 2 days arent that much to do all you have to do and relax so you're ready to start the coming week. Thank you for your feed back.

Adding days in schooling is advantageous to kids. They can learn more and widely through the added days of the month. They are benefitted in it. Education is basic and fundamentals for them so for me it is alright. Might be the school year will be shortened it because it was added in 6 days. First you have to adjust the shedule but for the coming days and weeks you can be used to it if it is implemented. If that is realized if the school year covers 10 months , in my guess it will be shortened to 9 months for that additional class in a week.

Hi Geniustiger, Im not sure they will shorten the school year. Yes, education is very important but we're not used to this here. My parents and their parents went to school only 5 days/week, so did I and I sure needed the weekend to relax and play.....remember they're only kids. Its important they have time to play and be children. Thanks for sharing.

Normally, we used to have our saturday in schools, universities, and offices. This includes all aspects in private company, but public institution. Several years ago, the saturday activities suddenly omitted by the government. So it is can be said that we just received the policy compared to you for example, that have long since saturday is part of weekend holiday. I heard that this saturday holiday is for the sake of department of tourism, to increase tourism at the saturday. But not for long after that because now I heard that saturday is going to be active again. I don't know the reason. But because I feel that I don't go to college on saturday not for long ago, the policy seems inconstant. For me, it's better to have saturday to be kept in activities. If we want the weekend, we can make the saturday work just half a day, not a full day.

Hello Iharidh, I wonder why they keep making changes like this. I know that most people want to have the weekend to be with their family or go to the cottage. Having only one day to do so is not a good idea. I sure hope our government will review their decision and decide not to go with it. Thanks for replying.

i am in ontario but have not heard of this concept. i have, however, heard of kids going to school into july and august so the summer would be shorter which i think is ok, but i dont think 6 day school days would fly.

Well they're talking about it for us next door in Quebec. Our Liberal Provincial Government is going on with laws like you wouldnt believe. I feel like we're not a democracy anymore with our "dictator" premier. I wouldnt send my kid to school on a Saturday IF I had kids. Thanks Cher.

This might no be to bad if the children could see the advantage of finishing their schooling sooner. Here they keep cutting back on school days and just extend teh hours. Money is hte main problem here, teachers are expensive. Changes always upset people but it will all work out in the end.

Here, because school gets suspended due to typhoons and flooding, or even the eruption of a volcano, the government sometimes orders Saturday classes for public schools and some private schools do the same. But this isn't done weekly or the whole school year. Normally, it's also just for half a day so the children would still have some of their weekend.

So sorry you have such bad weather where you are. I would understand them closing up the schools if you have typhoons. Yes, children need the weekend to play, relax and BE kids!! Thank you for replying Verabear.

I dont think it is such a good idea.Kids need a leisure time to do something special things.5 days study is tired ,we need 2 days to relex.so I think 5 days is better than 6 days study.

I think so too. We as adults need 2 days to relax, so why not kids? Thanks Fairytale

I don't agree with it at all. If any state or providence feels like they need more time with students in the class room, add that time during the five days they are already there. Expand the the day by an hour or hour an a half. Kids shouldn't have to go to school six days a week. Like you said, this will increase the drop out rate.

Yes Im afraid it might make the drop out rate even worse. Im really happy Im not going to school anymore. Thanks HBK
