UK cat and dog survey

February 6, 2010 3:28am CST
There was an item on the news this morning that a recent survey has shown that the UK population of cats and dogs has increased over the last couple of decades. They were also saying that they'd try ang get a question added to the UK national census next year to get an accurate figure of the numbers of pet cats and dogs n the country. What do you all think of the idea of adding a count of the numbers of pets cats and dogs in a household to national surveys? Do you think that this would be a good idea? Will it yeald useful information?

Now I'm not in the UK, but I wouldn't tell them for fear the powers that be would think I was a cat hoarder and break into my house and take my cats.

I know that you are basically running a rescue and rehoming centre out of your home, can you get yourself registered as such? or is that altogether to much hassle? Or not actually necessary?

if push came to shove, I would do it, but until then, I'll take a pass - it is a hassle...

I think that to know how many cats and dogs live in the UK with their owners would be interesting. The British are known as animal lovers. My family had cats when I was a child. Now I am grown up I have my own two dogs. They are both miniature poodles called Secret and Magic. Secret is white with black patches and Magic is black. I like national surveys and showing cats and dogs sounds right to me.

I'll be interested to see if they do actually include it in next years national census. I've no doubt that the information would be useful to the pet food companies.

It may very well be useful info indeed. I think they could estimate everything from the petfood market to possible business ventures within the area. They could estimate a lot more from the size and weight of the dog too.
