This is such a difficult question because there are so many news stories about people who do wake up from a coma against all odds. I always thought that things like this would be an easy decision because you certainly don't want someone that you love to suffer but when you are in the situation, the decision is very difficult. In 1/09, DH had a stroke and suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result and was on life supports as a result. While the Doctors never approached me about taking him off, the intensive care nurses did. I was in such shock about the whole thing to begin with and I couldn't bear to think of losing him. I decided to keep him on the machines that were helping him live. About a week later, he was weaned off of the breathing machine and a week after that, they were able to remove the feeding tube. He spent 6 months in hospitals of one sort or another but today he is home. He still has some challenges but physically, he is doing very well and is able to live the full life that he had before he got sick. Personally, I think that the system that they have in France is the best. The Doctors make that decision. They are much more qualified to do so and it takes the pressure off of the family to make that decision.

Well that is a touchy subject. I have a living will where if I am on life support and that is the only thing that is keeping me alive and there is no way I would be the person I was before I went in the coma then the plug will be pulled and I will slowly fade away hopefully with no pain. My wife has agreed to this and she has a copy, my doctor and some family and friends.
