With the current economic times we find ourselves in, it would be a great time to go back to some old fashion values. To explain to kids that Christmas isn't a material day and they don't need a ton of presents under the tree. Take the time to explain the meaning of holidays.
Valentines Day is another money making opportunity for corporations. People in debt, will still buy unnecessary candy, flowers, cards to show their love. I'd rather save the money and pay down a bill that's real love. Not being able to pay bills is stressful and not a fun way to live. Flowers and candy can't fix that.
This Valentines Day say I love you without all the unnecessary junk.

I agree. My husband and I dont do anything special on Valentines day and I dont mind. I dont need flowers and I already have candy. Its the same for xmas, we dont give each other gifts. So when we need or want something, we just go out and get it. Why wait for a holiday to have something you need or want?
So for Valentines, we try to spend it together, have a nice dinner then watch a movie.

I really do agree with you vmenard. People today are more MATERIALISTIC. They don't value what is truly the meaning of the day it is entitled. It shows that they already lack the heart to celebrate the true holiday spirits. It doesn't mean if you have a gifts you already celebrated the days holiday. It is where your heart should be not the green papers you give away as gifts or buy something out of it.
