How to stop very playful cat from scratching?

Hi everyone! I have an 1 year old cat, her name is Malteasers. However, she liked to scratch people when ever anyone is around. I do understand its normal for cats to scratch, but I think my cat is a bit over excited sometimes and goes into a "human scratching frenzy!" I has stopped biting though(thank God!) Any recommendations to help train my cat to be a bit more gentle around us? I have had a few cats before, and non of them were as hyperactive as Malteasers!

It can be difficult, but since she's that young it might be possible. You should teach them that scratching is bad, and try to get her to understand the concept of it. Say 'no' and hit their paw when they do it and be sure that you explain why you said'no'. Be firm and don't give attention right away. it make take some time but its effective.

Thank you. I will try that will my cat soon. How hard should I hit? Lets say a light knock is enough? Anyway, I really hope it works. My family is getting very upset with my cat behaving this way. Everytime I play with him, I look like I have just went through a papercutter! Thank you for taking the time to reply. Greatly appriciated.

We always take their paws and gently squeeze their claws back in, all the while scratching their favorette spot. This take some time to work and everyone must do the same when giving love to the cat. Some never learn, so you must just warn people new to the cat that she may scratch.

Thank you for the reply. I will try this with Malteasers and hope she will learn something. I have read suggestions online that say "spray the cat with water" but I think thats just pure horrible. Its like spraying pepper spray towards a child when they misbehave! Thank you again for the suggestion. :)
