At what age do you think a person should start working?

Here in the Philippines, most of the time, as soon as you finished your studies, you are already responsible for having a good and decent job based on what course you finished. At the age of 20 most probably, a Filipino starts working for himself and his family. But because Filipinos are such industrious people, others may even start working at earlier age, even if still studying just to support his studies and his families' needs. So for me, a person is supposed to work by age 20... :)

I think in the USA a person should start working at 18,and while they are working they should be going to college. Then they can be paying off their student loan. That is just my opinion though.

I agree with you though I am from China where people start working at the age of 24 when they graduate from college. I believe that people should start work after high school. One or two years' working experience can only makes them better appreciate their higher education and they know which direction they should aim at in college. As a result, they don't need any outer motivation because they already have the inner zeast to pursue their goal. 18 and 20 is a good time to do this.

I think that would be good to start working early because it helps build character. The thing is, our basic education system doesn't invest much in skills that would allow young people to gain decent part time employment outside of fastfood chains.
Personally, I only started working before turning 21.

I think to start to work is a very important step in a persons life. Usually work consumes a lot of time and it takes preparation and a lot of requisites to start working. It takes will, or necessity, it takes time too. I am a student in college and I live by myself and I am starting to experience the difficulties implied but since college is in the first place I can't work. As much as I want to achieve financial independence it is hard for me to conciliate everything

I suppose fifteen is ok if you are talking about a paper round or perhaps even younger than that. But I guess different countries have different rules and so forth. I had a paper round at the age of twelve if I remember rightly, quite young but I enjoy the job and I got on well with the customers! Andrew

At the age of 10 years old any minor could work as long as their is a permit from parents and from the labor department. They could start to work in slight job like being a seller or store clerk, washer, errand boys/girls, etc..Then, at the age of 18 years old, it is the legal age for most country to be legally work as long as one is capable of receiving instruction or orders from his superior and could do his work. They could work at any job which fit in their skill, experiences and if one graduates from a college. One could find a decent job which pay more and could help his self in terms of financial matter.

From the time I turned 12 I had a paper route. Then at 16 I was a group counselor at the WMCA. Then I went to being a waitress in a summer camp in up state New York. I have worked all my life. I went to a year of college and started a full time job at nineteen years of age. I truly believe a person should start working summer jobs in their teens to get a feel for learning responsibilities. It makes you a much better employee once you get your first good paying job.

I live in the states and the age a person starts to work varies. I began babysitting to earn extra cash at age 11. I began working in a store at age 15 and have for the most part worked ever since. My oldest daughter used to help me cater weddings when she was 13 or so and began working with me at the store when she was 16. My 2nd daughter got her first job at age 17. My 3rd daughter began working at 17 also and my youngest is 15 and has been looking for work. There aren't many jobs to be found right now.

I was raised on hard work... I don't beleive that people should ever "start" working. I was raised on a farm and I had chores. In my world those of us who were raised right were taught hard work = a better life from an early age. Children do not belong in sweat shops for crap wages but how do you ever suceed if you aren't taught that hard work pays off. Lest just let kids sit around and do nothing and then expect them to understand that... Hard work is a lifestyle and the earlier one starts the better they are it.

I think working at an early stage should be imperative as it opens us up to good working ethics, the responsibility and the gains for our endeavor. i started to work when i was still in college and able to help my parents with the expenses for my education, but the best part is learning a lot of things such as managing time and expenses and much more creating a sense of responsibility in preparation for a real good job in the future.

In general, one should start working after finishing their studies but that depends on the situation of a person. If the person doesn't have the financial capabilities to support his studies then he has to work and earn to support his studies. But that also depends on the qualitites and requirements a company or the job itself is looking for an applicant. In order for a person to find a good earning job, he should have a college degree or had been to college for 1 or 2 year or at least a high school graduate. Those who wasn't able to finish high school would fing their selves working for a low generating income jobs. So for me, it depends on the situation of a person.

It should be as early as one likes. It should be the person's decision and it should not be imposed. Philippines is going to tough times and people younger than 18 may start working provided that they don't forget to finish their studies so that they're future will be stable.

Here the legal age is 16 but you can get what I think is called a worker's permit to work as early as 14 I believe, or maybe it's just fifeteen. Career wise, it all depends on whether they go to college, if not then it's as early as 18, and if they do go to college it could be as late as 28 before they actually get a job in their career field (the career they studied for)
