Hi, Mylotters, i don't know whether anyone of you notice that whenever a mother give birth to a baby, all of these babies will cry after the delivery is done, what do you think is the main reason behind a crying baby when he/she first leave the womb of the mother??
Personally, i think it is because of several reasons; firstly the baby is afraid of having to leave a secure and warm part of a mother womb that he/she had been occupied for nine months, secondly, i think it is the cold temperature inside a delivery hospital room that make the baby cry out in protest of the cold treatment. Thirdly, i think it is because baby is not ready to face whatever challenges he/she is going to meet in this world that crying out loud is a way for him to show his displeasure... (joke) But the actual reason is beyond my understanding, if anyone has any reason to disagree with me of the above reasons, please don't hesitate to share with me here.
Tell me whether do you agree that all babies born crying first, and then tell me whatever reason you think why he/she behave in this way. There is no right or wrong answer here, because i personally don't really know the right answer to this puzzle.

Hi, ewinner! May be it is just part of the reason , but i have no way knowing is it for real since the new born is unable to tell us later on. But according to other responses, it is because the new born respiratory system is clear after out of the mother womb contribute to the cry or his way of letting the doc. know he is well and alive. I agree you got a valid point too.

..hi.. not all babies cry after the delivery.. actually, doctors would usually pinch or do something with the baby to see if the baby responds.. that's one way of seeing how active the vital organs of the baby is.. If the baby won't cry in any way, there's something wrong.. When I gave birth, my baby didn't cry immediately.. when they were already bathing her, that's when she cried.. I don't think the reasons you've enumerated have some bearings.. but I won't say they are wrong.. we are entitled with our opinion after all.. so its just a matter of sharing.. and this is my own knowledge gathered from personal experience and some interviews I have had before..

Hi, ray... So not all the new born cry after they are delivered, some do and some don't. That is fine if you think i am wrong, because i don't know the right answer, it is just part of my personal observation, from movie and picture. At least i now know that some only cried after were handled by the nurse or doctor to test their respond to touch or pain. You got a valid point, Thank for telling me about it..i believe the purpose is to see whether the new born is alive or not. Thank for sharing your knowledge here.. happy mylotting!!

The baby has been living in his or her mother's womb. It was a lovely and comfortable place. All of a sudden at the end of the mothers pregnancy the baby had to go on a challenging journey out of the mother and into the outside world. It must be demanding to be born. One lady had a c section and her baby didn't cry when he was born. She was told this was normal because the baby didn't have a demanding journey like a baby that is born in the usual way. That baby was lifted out and had been happy in the comfortable womb of his mother. All healthy babies that are born in the usual way cry when they are born. I think it is natural for them to do that. They were happy in the womb and now they have come out into the world. Yes, it might feel cold compared to the warm and safe womb. Imagine a child at a water park going down a big slide and then he comes into the water at the end of a long tunnel. He might scream with pleasure. A newborn baby cries with excitement of at last coming into the outside world. Every baby I have had has been born crying. I guess it was a shock to come flying out in the space of two contractions. I have had three home births.

lamopar well if you had just spent nine months sheltered in nice warm uterus and now were suddenly propelled out into a too bright delivery room with the air pretty cool, and everyone talking and making a lot of noise you did not yet understand, would you not scream a little to tell people hey Im cold and I am hungry, and quit making so much noise you hurt my tender eardrums. really its the sudden departure from the safety of mom's womb out into the cold real world. the baby will soon be warmed and cuddled and whispered to soothingly then the baby will maybe even smile or gurgle.

Yes, the cold real world will make the new born cry, but it can also mean the new born want to let the doc. know he is alive but he can't say it in word like " hi doc.! I am fine and how are you?" , so crying is the only way for him to convey the message. We just don't know for sure, as for me, i cry is because i am afraid; that is no doubt about it...lol!!

i am no expert friend but as far as i know the baby cries is a sign that they are alive. some doctors even give them a smack in the bottom if they dont cry when they are out of the womb. that is what i think of it. maybe they are also crying inside but we dont hear it specially when they really wanted to go out during the labor of the mother. the cry means let me out of here. har har har

HI, Bird! Don't worry you are not an expert on new born, me neither. If the baby is crying inside because he wanted out of that confine space of the mother womb, then during delivery and after delivery, he should be smiling or at least stop crying once he is fully out of the mother, so i think baby cry while inside is not a likely scenario. But like the first responder said, not all the new born cry. Those who cry is because the doc. or nurse want to test the response to see whether he is alive, it does make sense and it think it is the most likely case, in other word, either the new born cry to show that he is living, or he will be make to cry to make sure he is alive, that is the reason why we always see or hear new born cry on movie or in reality. In your case; i think it is less likely the reason, and also baby inside a womb is very much restricted by his feed tube from mother to prevent him from making noise through his vocal chord except making movement like kicking , hand signal or waving. Don't you think it make more sense to you ....hahaha...
Thank for sharing your well thought out response...haha....

yes it sure made sense. but whatever the reason was we are all thankful and appreciating that the babies are crying for it is a sign that they are alive and responding. or maybe they are disgusted with the gel like liquid that is wrap on their body har har har. its was fun reading your discussion.

Hello Lampar! You made me think hard of that question. I am studying nursing and I have been assisting many mothers during their deliveries. And it never came to the point to ask myself or someone, "why do a baby cries soon after birth?" That was an mind activating question. And after reading your discussion, I was like, "yeah, why is it? I never thought of that before."
Now here's a thing I know about giving birth. As mentioned by your 1st responder, sometimes there are babies who failed to cry and it signals that there is something wrong with the baby's respiration. It might be cause of presence of fluid in the oral and nasal cavities or it might be cause of a cord coil or other potential serious causes. We use the APGAR (Activity-Pulse-Grimace-Appearance-Respiration)scale/scoring to rate the baby's condition.
About your question if all babies born crying first? Critically thinking and to analyze it, NO all the babies not born crying first. By the time the baby gets out, he can't able to cry because of the presence of fluids in his oral or nasal cavity. That is why we directly use oral and nasal suction bulbs to suction and get rid of those fluids. That is the very first thing we prioritize by the moment the baby is delivered - the airway for respiration. After that, the baby begins and able to cry which is a good sign.
Now for the question why baby cries after delivery or after suctioning, here's what your question made me think of: crying is the baby's response to discomfort and change of temperature/environment, just like when a baby feels hungry they respond through it through crying, right? This concept is true because by the time we finished cutting and cleaning the cord of the baby, cleaning the baby and dressing him up, the baby stops crying. =)

Hi, summer77, you explain really well and in details here, i appreciate your input through your vast experience and knowledge in nursing, it is an eye opener for me to know so much details and the answer from your response.
In other word, a quiet new born is not a good sign at all and instantly doc. or nurse know that there is something wrong here. So a normal new born is supposed to cry and now i understand why i notice all new born always cry; the silent one also cry is because of deliberate action from nurse to be sure he is alive or at least is problem free in term of his respiratory system, or air way system. You hit it right into my head. So i think my second reason also does make sense to you the crying one is because of hungry or discomfort due to the change of environment or temperature outside the womb. Thank you for your well thought out response here, and happy mylotting to you!!!

You got it right lampar! And you are welcome it is a pleasure to share my knowledge and experiences.
Can I add something?
If you read the response of raynejasper. She said that her baby didn't cry immediately and when the nurses/midwives were already bathing her baby, that's time she cried. The reason of this could be that the baby's air way is not clear. And while the nurses was bathing the baby, they are also clearing up the airway of the baby and that enables the baby to cry. As what I said, the baby only cries right after the airway has been clear using suction bulbs (or suction machine.
=D I'm really greatfull that I can relate and talk about my learning. Great that you open up this discussion! =D
