I was driving home today

And was sitting at a light.
Suddenly, from under the freeway dropped 2 birds, fighting.
Feathers flew.
Finally one flew off in a rain of feathers and the other landed on the ground.
I first thought - pigeons fighting at this time of year?
Then I realized that the one standing on the ground was NO pigeon.
It was a hawk. Not a real BIG hawk, but a hawk of some sort.
"Wow!" I thought. "How many times is a city gal like me going to see something like that?"
Oh sure, hawks catch pigeons and other birds.
I sometimes see smaller birds harrying hawks away from areas. But I've NEVER seen a hawk actually ATTACKING another bird. I can only hope that the pigeon wasn't injured too badly, maybe this is why I sometimes see dead pigeons on the sides of roads - they are injured by a hawk and then get hit by a car or truck (tho I did once see a pigeon sucked down by a big truck and die.)
Then, yesterday, we were driving along and saw hawks sitting on the lights - one on each side of the light actually, so it was kind of a "two-fer" hawk sighting.
Not the first interesting sight at a light, but have you you spotted something interesting lately? Some unexpected bit of nature where you are? (Oh, the two-fer had a dead deer on the medium under the light.)

Now I'm feeling badly torwards that hawk. I keep thinking of bullies pushing their way through life, and picking on that poor pigeon. Silly, huh? As for anything interesting nature wise...I'm not sure. I saw a fox run across the back of my apartment complex not too long ago. It's cold so that was unusual this time of year, plus I live in the suburbs, not really a country area.

Even though, I live in the country, a hawk is still rare. I don't think they're crazy about people. But the red tailed hawks, I had never seen any big birds because of the DDT, but years after they stopped using it. I saw one. Amazing. Beautiful colors and wicked wing span.
Nature lately, 3 dear standing in the road and wouldn't move plus a car coming around a curve behind me. Those buggers are dangerous.

Does the guy doing push-ups on the floor of the local coffee shop count? haha No natural "wonders" lately, but I have seen people do some pretty unusual things. As for the birds fighting, I am glad the pigeon flew away alive, and I hope he was not insured. My vision is lousy though, and if I saw it, I woudln't know if they were fighting, or copulating. LOL

I see a hawk or two from time to time, if I look up. It's lovely to see them gliding on a thermal... makes me a bit envious, although I'm not about to go hang gliding to experience it for myself.

Really. We have a middle school where they taught hang gliding at least for a while - not in school, but because they had a really cool hill in the back - I went there the first year it opened, back then it was covered in ROCKS, now its grass.

Hi, ElicBxn. I have not seen anything interesting that I can recall of. The only time would be last year when I was at Swan Lake. I saw many ducks and turtles playing in the water. That is the only time that I saw something remarkable... I am glad that you are okay after seeing the hawk and birds. I don't like hawks, they scare me and they make me afraid..

As a kid in northern Louisiana, I saw vultures circling often. Up high, they look kind of graceful. Neat.
Then one day I was walking on our deserted road that let to the village, & I saw a pair on the ground, over some carcass--not a big one, but frankly, I don't remember what it was because all my attention was on the vultures. I'd seen drawings, of course, but nothing prepared me for how huge they could be, now how truly ugly they were!
Shudder!
I took a wide berth around them. They looked at me, but decided I was too lively, & probably too small, & returned to lunch.
I ran home, thinking eeeww ewww EEEWWWW all the way. It's still a snapshot in my mind.
EEEWWW. !!!

Agh! What about the animal's rights?? Arrest them hawks! Pigeon murderin' beasts!
Sigh. It's almost reason to be glad I don't get out much any more. I really hate to see animals die, & yes, I know, it's "natural." I don't care. I've always hated it, & I long for the time when the lion will lie down with the lamb, & tigers will eat grass again.

I saw a huge hawkd the other day feeding in the yard across the street. I knew there was a couple of them that lived near by but I had never seen either one of them that close. I have been forever worried about them and my Chihuahuas. I have to watch for them everytime I take my babies out.

I haven't seen anything unusual lately. Some of the deer seem bolder than normal and I have seen some birds that I thought should have gone south (I live outside of Pgh. Pa.) but that's about it.

I do live in Texas and these birds are probably down from your neck o' the woods or Canada
We have WAY more in the winter than the summer and those are quite bad enough!
I've noticed that they roost around areas with lots of lights, guess those are warmer - in the summer they are in my tree!

Sometimes I think the poor birds get confused about North and South also. The climate is changing so much they probably don't know where they are some of the time.
