do you take advantage of membership/advantage cards?

almost every cashier in the supermarket, bookstores etc will ask you whether you have this cards and if you don't they'll offer you in exchange for membership fees of course. i don't think we really get something from it. they may give you discounts or small freebies but if you come to think of it, you actually pre-paid those discounts and perks through the initial membership fee. so do we really have an advantage or we're actually taken advantage of?

Hubby and I just avail this membership card from a nearby grocery store where we go for grocery-ing but not very often. It was $3 approximately, at first we were hesitant to get one though co's we don't normally go there but since when we buy stuff it always cost us more than a thousand so it is still better to avail the card specially that the cashier lady told us that the renewal is free. Actually we have several membership/points card with us, to name a few; we have points card using our credit card, advantage card from SM, Mercury points card, and our newest is our waltermart points cards. Hubby and I have taken advantage of the points we earned form buying from SM. Hubby used that SM points to pay for his working shoes! :)

In India a membership card/loyalty card is issued free. We as a customer don't need to pay even a single penny from our pocket to get a card. And hence the discount or the perks issued by the supermarket or medical store is absolutely free.

Yes I do as I think I might as well and get a little off the price and/or a reward for shopping with them but I only go for the ones where I already shop...

I won't pay for one, but I will get one if I go to that store alot. WHy not? But...watch what they do... I have one at Borders book store.. and I don't shop there alot, but the points expire. I was nearly worth a cashing for $15 and then alot of them expired and left me with next to nothing! Unless you spend alot there, the points are not good. I use it just so I can get the coupons in my email... last 2 years they were for 50% off regular price and I'd take my grand kids there to buy them a book, but now it is only 20-30% off coupons. I use my grocery Ralphs card every week and get points and every quarter I get at least $15 free groceries with the coupon they send me.. and all for swiping a card. I add to my points by taking in my own bags, 5 points each, limit 10 per visit. But hey, 50 points four times a week is 200 points a month! So that is the only one that is really good to have. If you shop alot, they can be good, but for me.. since I don't shop alot, most are not that profitable.

I have some menberiship card. when my expenditure in these stores reach an amount, i will be rewarded, a glass, a bowl, a chance to draw a winner etc. small things that worth little. But still with such cards, i am uaully involuntarily pulled to those stores and spend money there. It is a smart promotion method!!

I won't pay for one but should I have, I will use it. Nothing to lose and everything to gain
