I want to push through with a business idea, but...

...my siblings say that it's not going to work. I have a regular job, but I want to augment to our family savings, since we have a baby and costs of goods are rising. So I wanted to open an online store. I found an opportunity to sell imported bags, actually they are high-end bags that are pretty expensive in stores. I found someone who could sell them to me at wholesale price. If I put a mark-up on the products, it would still come out cheaper than the high-end bags sold in department stores. I asked my siblings about this idea, and both of them said that it will NOT work. Primary reason is that it is a high-end product, and that there are imitation bags (re: fake) proliferating in the market. Those are the ones that people are buying, not the originals. I'm close to scrapping the business idea from my head, but someone told me that "going into a business is always a risk." Now I'm stuck in the middle, deciding if I still want to push through or give it up. If you were in my shoes, what would you do? Sorry to vent it out here in MyLot. Peace!

Sorry .Personally i kinda agree with your cousin's view. To buy and sell high end product can be hard. But i also agree with going into business is always a risk. if you never try, you may hold some regret in future. So i give u a 2cents advise: You can always give it a try, but dun go all out. Set out a blogshop or whatever online shop u wish. From there you can see the situation and have a feel with it. Probably u dun even see a customer buying or just full of enquiry but no sales. So you can give up the thought. If you manage to get some sales, from there you can have more confident and planning for your new career. Thats all. wish u all the best.

You have a point. I'll try to research more and see if I can get this further. Thanks for the advice.

Well firstly can I applaud you for trying to come up with an idea and investigating it, most people don't even get this far. I would though say that in this case your siblings have a good case because there is already a cheaper alternative to what you will offer even if that cheaper version is a fake. Maybe there is some sort of tighter niche within the bag market you can capitalize on where there is not already a widely available cheaper alternative. Not knowing the bag market I can unfortunately suggest one. But don't give up on the idea, just look at a way that you can fine tune it so it offers something which doesn't already have a cheaper alternative or an improvement on what is already commonly available at a fair price.

I'd say don't give up and start slow. Try selling 1 or 2 pieces first. Do not buy in bulk and see how it goes. Put it up on your online blog or online site that you are using it for your official online business and only try selling 1 or 2 handbags. I think handbags are a very good business to start out and since you said you got them authentic but are selling it at a cheaper price than the market, I think that's cool and will attract customers definitely. Go all the way for it, and start out small, like I said. All the best to you. If it fails, you do not have much to lose since you are only experimenting with a few bags. This is my opinion, I hope it gives you some ideas on how to go about doing it.

hello moonchild, This is true...lot of cheaper things are now in the market. The imitations, and people were more practical nowadays when it comes to shopping. So,i guess, your siblings had some point. If you really want to pursue with business,i suggest you go with the flow. Why not try with cheaper bags, clothings and shoes from china and Korea. We need to dance with the beat of the music.

I guess that's another idea, but a lot of people are already selling them as well. But I'll look into it. Thanks.

hi! i think your siblings have their point. because of many product imitations in the market which are sold to very cheap price i bet you will have a hard time selling your goods. due to economic crisis, many people will but imitation products rather than the originals to save up money which they can spend for foods and other basic needs. but its not the end of the line. doing a business has always taking s risk at its side. so if you do not take the risk then you will never know what will happen next. if you have all the resources, i mean the money, to push through a business then go but carefully study and and make a business plan. my husband and i, are regular employees also. we wnated to have our own business someday. we are taking the step one by one because you know we have many expenses to pay. we try to invest in growing vegetables but the weather is uncontrollable. again we invest on the onion plantation and hopefully we can pass this through since its going summer here. its not really huge investment but it is something we can afford to cash out. we never think of resigning since we can not see this as stable business. we are planning to have another business like buy and sell but we are carefully studying the cash flow here. i always want to have my own restaurant as well as you know people always need food. so for you think of something you really want. think of something profitable like food business. you can do this little by little. what is important is you love what you are doing.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I'm doing some research on the viability of going for this business idea that I have. I wish someone can guide me through doing a feasibility study, I'd need that. Hmm, I'll think about it a bit more. Thanks again.

Hmm I think the idea is great. The only problem I see besides capital is "where will you get the supplies to sell them cheap but you still get a mark up."? We call it in the Philippines UKAY UKAY. The process is they import surplus or 2nd hand goods which are genuine and they try to restore it at its fullest and then sell them. They usually declare it as hand carry or personal effects to avoid paying for duties and taxes. So I believe that your IDEA is GOOD and it will be better if that idea is pushed thru. I believe that "you cant win a lottery ticket, if you dont pay for a combination"

Well people would certainly be more likely to buy your cheaper bags than then ones at the department store, so then why is the department store still selling them? I'd say go for it, but make sure you don't put too much money into it at first.
