So the question becomes is this a risk for Dell? Will people buy it not knowing what they are jumping into? What caused Dell to sell Ubuntu and not Windows? Is Ubuntu/Open Source ready for the consumer to grab a hold of it?
I personally think that Dell is taking a risk and it is obviously paying off as they are still selling Ubuntu on some of there computers. I think some people are buying the computers because they are cheaper than a Windows computer and will get confused and angry with Ubuntu/Linux/Open Source Software on the lack of Windows like freatures. I am not sure motivated Dell to start to sell Ubuntu on home pcs. As far as that goes I am not really sure Ubuntu seems to be easier to use than when I first joined when it was at version 6.10 and now that it is at 9.10. It seems to have grown in not being so hard to learn. What are your thoughts?

normally dell give the possibility to choose ubuntu or windows in the small netbooks with a low configuration!!So i don't think that you will find difficulties using ubuntu considering it is user friendly and the majority of programs you can find them pre-installed on the ubuntu os and lastly is more secure than windows!!I never bought a small netbook but i think i will consider may be better having ubuntu than linux also because you must think that windows os normally are low and overweight so it can be not so fast powered by an atom processor and so low ram configuration so from this point of view ubuntu and linux distro in general ar much better than windows!!

I, personally, think Ubuntu is very easy to learn. I have been using ubuntu for 2 years. However, I doubt "Ubtuntu/Linux/Open Source Software" on the lack of Windows like features." I think with open sources, linux actually has a lot more features than windows. Not because there is a lot of useful open sources, but also one can install wineHQ to run windows programs. So, it actually have more features than on windows. I support this idea, and I believe dell with make clear notice which OS will the computer shipped with. Therefore, I don't think customers will get angry.

They're probably starting to realize what a piece of crap OS windows is and what a rip off monopoly company microsoft is. Sun Sparc has been doing this for years, selling premade systems with linux alrady installed. It was good business and expanded their customer base. I imagine Dell is doing the same thing for the same reason.

well i have been using ubuntu for past three months i quite like using it.Well you have raised an issue regarding dell then i think there is no harm in selling ubuntu but they should sell it those people who know how to operate ubuntu or are willing to learn it for more security and better networking.
