Does the Disney Channel scare you?

I used to watch that channel when I was a young girl and enjoy the cartoons, Growing Pains, and other shows that were entertaining but sent a good message in the end. I look at the shows they have now and they are not nearly as focused on teaching lessons but more on entertainment. Whenever I have kids in the future I don't know that I would feel comfortable letting them watch some of the shows now. How about you? Are you comfortable with what Disney is making for our children to watch these days?

I don't have any kids but I have watched some of the Disney's shows. I don't like them or aleast most of them. I don't like"The Suit life of Zach and Cody". The boys are always in trouble. Breda Song's charecter London Tipton is rich, spoiled, dumb as door knob, self center and constantly back stabs people, like Maddie! Of course MAddie lets it happen over and over again! That isn't something a child should learn! "Suite Life on Deck" should of never been put on the air. Disney is trying to keep Zach and Cody's characters going and it is overdone! Well overdone! "That's So Raven" Raven has the perfect hair always. Her clothes are always in fashion! That shows that ever girl want to be like Raven and it isn't good! No parent should be giving in to their kids and I think that is what the show aims at! "Hannah Montana" I really hate! I dislike Miley Cyrus. She is a spoiled brat who only cares about herself! The show gives the empression any girl can be like her and that isn;t true! "Jonas",give me a break! Disney just has a show for them so they ride out on their popularly before it fizzles! The only show I like is the cartton "Phineas and Ferb"! It is funny! It is original and fresh! That is why I like it! Disney was more fun when they showed the old Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck cartoons!

Thank you! That is exactly my problem! The "entertainment" for the kids is entertaining, but giving them the complete wrong idea on how they should be and how they should interact with other people. My uncle does not allow his daughter to watch Hannah Montana. I fully agree with him - I saw nothing wrong with "Lizzie McGuire" as it was about a typical girl and it was fairly accurate. But, apparently its no longer good enough to make money.

My kids are grown and on their own, but I would not let them watch some of what's on Disney Channel if they were young. Whether it's educational or not, some of the themes are not good for children to watch.

Yes, I believe Walt would cry, too.

I fully agree. I think Walt would cry if he could see some of what has become of his company - all for profit nowadays. I still love the movies - they seem to be doing alright, but the TV shows are just not what they should be.

Its not whats on the channel that is scary - but the fact that everything they show is not made for the purpose of teaching the next generation how they should behave, but rather teaching them bad behaviors.

"If Walt Disney saw the Disney Channel today, he would cry" ...that's the name (or something like it) of something I became a "fan" of on facebook, lol. You aren't alone in you perception of the modern Disney Channel's image. Overall, I do think its just another sign of how life is getting faster and people are getting dumber. When I was a kid I watched the Disney channel, and they still actually shoed DISNEY things on it- Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Winnie the Pooh, and the blocks of classic Mickey cartoons. These days, all they show is Hannah Montana and these other empty kiddie-comedies.

I saw that group this morning - it made me laugh to see that I am not the only one who thinks so. I miss the good old Disney - but there is nothing I can do but whine it seems. They aren't going to change - too many greedy people in this world who dont care.

Recently I saw a show on the Disney Channel and the theme was teenage vampires. I know there is a preoccupation with the subject but aren't there better things to tell stories about? Especially on a "Kid Safe" channel.

My son is a little old for the Disney Channel (he's a teenager), and my daughter (she's 10) doesn't really care for any of their shows, but I would let my kids watch. I don't think everything they watch needs to be educational. Entertainment is fine, too.

I agree that entertainment is fine, but some of the things I have seen are not even good for them to watch. I can't help but look at some of the celebrities Disney has produced that people watch. Miley Cyrus and Lindsay Lohan started out fine and sweet - now look at them. I just dont like what Disney is producing anymore which is sad. I used to think it was the best channel for kids.

while i dont get the disney channel (i am in Canada and it costs a lot extra $$ to get it) i have seen it in the US and i have to agree with you. we have family channel here and its not too bad, but some of the movies they have on there are sure questionable, fortunately they are on later at night.

It truly is getting very bad here. At least yours are on later at night. I hope that things will get better but I have a bad feeling that they wont. I hate that I will have to use the lock on the tv that controls what channels my children will be able to watch.

I agree, there are some programs on the Disney Channel that I wouldn't allow children to watch. Of course I remember that they had shows such as Epcot magazine and other great programs. I miss them, but I guess that is their way of keeping up with progress. Even the other family channels such as Hallmark, will take monitoring. I couldn't believe it when they added Cheers. To me that program teaches nothing and is mostly a show of barroom humor and put downs. Even with it being on late at night, children don't seem to have bedtimes anymore so they can easily watch programs that we would prefer not to have them see. I do give Disney credit for some of the shows such as Handy Manny, Agent Oso, Motovation Movers, Little Einsteins and more. But also, as it has been said on the television, kids need to turn off the television and get out and play and exercise their imaginations.

I fully agree! There are some shows that are worthwhile, but they seem to have the least airtime. Its sad that education is no longer the important thing for kids and its no wonder that some kids are turning out so bad. They are watching these awful shows with no parental guidance.

I think it's very idealistic and when kids are exposed to it they need to be reminded the difference between real and not real.. I'm pleased to see that their content has become far more multicultural than it was when I was very young.

Well, I don't have the Disney Channel but as far as I have seen the cartoons that they do those days.. its certainly easy to say that the cartoons back than were a lot different. Its kinda odd that the kids those days like them but hey.. its a different generation. And if you look around you might also find a new cartoon thats actually interesting too. Sure there might not be many but their still there.. :)

Childrens' programmes these days have gone very downhill, and i know for a fact that it's not just the nostalgia in me what's talking. They seem to lack any message at all. Programmes like "Hannah Montana" and "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody" just seem to express the message that it is funny for kids to do bad things and that they can have whatever they want.

Back when I was growing up, my television use to be parked on the Disney channel. I feel that today's shows on Disney focus more on dreams and entertainment, and less on educational programming. I feel that Disney has made a good decision. Let me explain. I feel this way because I have an 8 year old daughter that is as cute as a button and my goal is to put her on television, through auditions and casting calls. She loves the spotlight and because of Disney and the kind of shows they put on now, it actually motivates my daughter to want to become like one of the kids on Disney and I feel that it's a good thing. Disney is finally showing what a normal child is capable of. You can do anything you want in life. Even be on tv.

I agree that getting out of the cartoon phase isn't bad - I just wish that the kids that do get on the shows are shown how to manage their sudden celebrity status. Some kids are not helped and look how they end up - I don't want any kid to turn out like some of them. If their managers and parents can show them how to live in that lifestyle the correct way - great! The problem is, some of them aren't succeeding and the kids are ruined.

I totally agree with you. I don't watch the disney channel, but I went on december to the movies to wach the princess and the frog. I thought it was a great idea a princess of that racial group, cause it's like declaring finally equalty!! My surprise was all that voodo or vudu involved!! Many little children there started to cry, I mean, every princess movie has evil characters but this one is very explicit about the tricks voovo involve!!! Well that's my comment, but you are right, cartoons just to be better back those days!!! Libna.
