Hello dear members,
I am an avid reader, though I seldom get the time to read outside a certain category which is engineering. But, I have peeked into all the fields of study. Psychology, philosophy, history, politics, architecture, fine arts are one of my most favorite subjects of interest. I am totally grateful to internet and some ebook publishers. Without their contribution it would be totally impossible for me to gain such an amount of knowledge in all those fields. Ebooks are free, advantageous, easy to get. Traditional way of reading of course is more comfortable and pleasing. Would you give superiority to paper books to Ebooks? Which form of reading do you think suits you the most?
Thanks in advance for participation.
God bless you all

Good thing you asked. I just bought myself an e-book reader and I have to say, having all those ebooks in one place makes it easy for reference. With digital being the future of books, I still wouldn't replace the fine print and feel of a book. I feel that it's convenient as well as part of the trend. I highly recommend owning an e-book reader or learn how to read a portable reader as at times, it's easier to find something out of print in digital than print. So there are pros and cons however the traditional scroll will always be true, better if it's in writing.

Hello,
unfortunately I don't have any idea about Ebook reader. Can you explain this to me? Almost all my ebooks are either pdf or text files. I have acrobat reader installed here. I hardly ever needed a reader for those books. What is so novel about an Ebook reader? Does this reader you are talking about has some added advantage? Please share your experience with us.
Thanks for the response

I wouldn't really go as far as say that one is superior over the other. Personally though I would still prefer the actual paper book, because as you said, it is more comfortable to read or rather you can find a more comfortable place/position to read them. As for ebooks, they are great for their accessibility and practicality. I guess i would go for some ebooks but for leisure will still go for paper.

Hi there,
I do agree with you on every word you said there. For leisure traditional paper books are still unparalleled. There are times when you have to do lot of research in a very short time. In situations like those only Ebooks will prove their utility. One has excellence while other has accessibility. Whoaaa! This discussion is never gonna end.

Hello dear,
Are you in that much love with books? Its really admirable you know. I remember when I was a child, I used to put a book under my pillow and fell asleep thinking about it. I loved it so much. To me book meant something more than just subject matters. But as the time went my requirements changed. I became an avid reader. The amount of matter I go through everyday could only come in paper publication if I were a billionaire. But as I am not, I rely heavily on Ebooks. But nothing compares the charm you have reading those paper books.

Hi elaine,
I think Ebooks of course have some added advantage. I sometimes wonder that they may even replace the traditional books. I think they are already giving the paper publishing market a tremendous pressure. People are actually attracted to Ebooks as they are easily available and very very easy to carry. But there is something quite different in paperback books. They are really objects of admiration for true book lovers. They are the treasured items for a collector's shelf. They will be of great importance no matter what disadvantages they apparently have.

Most of the net sites offer ebooks and ready to get on a single search. As the search engine do wonder while i search for an article of my interest or e-book. For example scribd like sites give away a number of ebooks on a single search. It is also freely available and down loadable and handy. In the internet era, i started using ebooks as a most preferable reading habits. if i get any doubt on a books, i readily search online and my doubt get cleared. So i can get more understanding than a reading a paper book. So ebooks are more superior than paper book as far as i am concerned

Hi,
Welcome to myLot. Yes, I believe there are added advantages in using Ebooks as your primary reading material. When you are reading an Ebook anything that you may need for complete understanding of the subject matter is quite easily accessible through internet or even through other Ebooks. In terms of accessibility and availability Ebooks are no doubt superior to paper books.

Hello and welcome to myLot,
Yes, for those who have to peruse through lots of materials daily or one who has an indomitable hunger for books should consider Ebooks as a primary medium of information. Ebooks are easily available and almost all of them are free. Even when you have to buy it, it costs less than its paper publication. Paper publications are bit unwieldy in that sense. Thanks for participating in this discussion.

I hve a combination of paper books and eBooks. I have some eBooks because they were cheaper, and I have a collection of paperbooks that I have bought over the years. The thing about paper books is that I can share them with my friends and family. Also, if II meet the author, I can get the book autographed. Who are you supposed to autograph an eBook?

Hello,
Sounds like you really love books. You can also share Ebooks with whoever has access to computers. But there is no possible way to have your Ebook autographed. Its an excellent logic you've given in support of paper books and I really appreciate that. Ebooks are highly effective when you have to do a lot of research in a very short period. They are good for bulk reading, or skimming. Otherwise, paper publications are more preferable.

Hello,
Yea there are plenty of books available online that deal with that subject. I mean, spiritualism, self motivation etc. The main advantage of Ebooks is that you can get it for free. Only you have to know the place to download from. Earning, my friend should be secondary. I feel really sorry to hear that you've given up such a great habit of yours.

Hmmm. Well, I still like reading the paper version of a book. Cause nothing really beats the smell of the pages, the sound of the paper while your turning a page, and the feel of the book in your hands. I just love reading books, though sometimes, I would read an ebook, if I'm just really curious with a book but I don't want to shell out money for it (Like the twilight series. hehehe.)...

@princess, you are so right there. Twilight is just a fad and it would soon go away. heheh. Plus the books are expensive and there's four of it, so I have never really thought about buying a copy for myself.
@getbiswa, there really are books that are better to buy in the paper than the book, for the reviewers, I prefer the paper version because I can writes notes there, and I can highlight the parts that is important.

Hi Ingkingderders,
Actually my choice of Ebooks depend on the subject matter. There are some fields that need diagrams, charts and tables quite frequently. For example,A huge diagram in a page and its explanation in the next page mentioning the parts and referring to the diagram every now and then. When you choose an Ebook with something like this, this would only irritate you even more. Because you have to scroll every now and then and look for the label of parts or the actual page number that has been referenced, making the reading more complicated than comfortable. In some cases you would prefer a paper book, even if it is costly.
Thanks for the response

Oh yeah, I agree with you, I've read the twilight series from an Ebook too. It's way too expensive to buy a paperback of the series whereas I know it can be downloaded and thinking it was just a fad that will soon fade out. :)

No, my dear friend. I wouldn't like to impose superiority to anyone of them. Because both of them have individual advantages in their respective fields. E-books are free but require some special equipments such as a PC with a CD/DVD ROM, internet etc. But paper books are easier to read as they don't require any machine. Moreover, you need electricity to read e-books which you don't need in case of paper books, just enough light. E-books are easier to carry in large volumes as they are written in digital forms. On the other hand paper books needs much space and when they are in large volumes. When the electricity in my area goes off, I sit down reading books and magazines. Both paper books and e-books is essential to me. Have a pleasant reading.

Hello farid,
I was just telling my friend, Sophie about these things. Yes, a lot of energy is consumed in reading an Ebook, no matter how fast reader you are. There are positive and negative side of both of them. Though the most important books I've read so far were Ebooks, I want to confess that I haven't taken into account how much electricity I wasted for that. But nonetheless they are not as unwieldy as paper books.

With ebooks growing in popularity, I have grown used to reading ebooks on a computer. Just like reading an actual book, you can highlight text and include comments or notes on the ebook. You can even bookmark the page where you stop reading, and continue from there in the next session. Also, the best part is, you can print these ebooks out, whereas for actual books, the only way to extract a page out is to photocopy it, which may not be readily available at that moment of time. What's more, with the launch of products like the Kindle, reading will be revolutionized in time to come.

Hi,
I appreciate your response. Don't you think it would be easier to highlight in paper book? And why should you xerox or reprint a paper book? Its already there, quite tangible. I myself use the margin in books to provide my own comments and notes. The habit of taking notes is really effective. Many people don't want to mark their books as they want it to look decent. But notes and comments on the pages of a book doesn't spoil its decency. Rather it puts forward the fact that the reader has gone way beyond the subject matter of this book.
Thanks once again for such a valuable response
God bless you

Yeah,it's very convenient to read ebooks now. But I still prefer the paper book because it's easy for our eyes to get tired to read on internet for a long time.I love the feeling of paper and now I can borrow book from our library and I don't need to cost.

Hi,
Even borrowing books from library costs you something, but Ebooks are totally free. Only you have to know where and how to search for them. When we state that Ebooks are free, we actually overlook couple of factors. The electricity that is consumed in reading a book having more than 1000 pages will be huge. Also it will strain your eyes to a great extent. You have to continuously sit in front of your system for an aggregate of 10-15 hours.
Take care

Hello,
I absolutely agree. When you urgently need a book and there are several reasons for which you can't get it immediately, there is no other alternative but to search it over internet. You have to go all the way to a shop to buy it. Books have become costlier in last decades. Also paper books are not something that you can easily handle or carry. I do agree Ebooks serve a great cause for avid readers.

Hi there. Though E-books are easier to get than paperbacks, I'd still prefer the traditional way of reading. I don't have to open my computer to read it. I don't strain my eyes as much as reading ebooks. The suspense and excitement it gives you is different. With E-books, you get tempted to do other things like you browse the net, chat. You multi-task. With the traditional book, you only concentrate in one thing, the story or knowledge it partakes.

Hello there,
welcome to myLots. You, like many of my friends here give more preference to paper books. I know in a few cases it becomes really difficult to get a hard copy of a particular book. Suppose you need a book immediately for your research and you go to market just to find that this particular book is out of print. There may also be situations like when you have to read parts from a number of books most of them are really costly in paper publication. On those situations Ebooks have no other competitors.

hi getbiswa,
I read a lot as well. I see that e-books have their place and many good uses. Still for me, nothing could take the place of a good book when I just feel like relaxing at night or while waiting for an appointment or something. I can't imagine a world without books.

Hello Sid,
You may just call me Biswa. Thats my name. Actually Ebooks have some advantages, for example, you can get them for free, and can carry 100 or more books in your compact disk. It sounds like you really love books. Books can be relaxing but it totally depends on the reader and the type of books he prefers. Your affection for books made reading so comfortable and relaxing to you. I've seen people complaining that reading gives them headache.

My vote would be for a paper book. I like to be able to curl up in my chair or in my bed so that I can read comfortably. E-books are just too hard for me to read and it's not very comfortable reading off the computer.

Hello,
When it comes to comfort paper books go far beyond excellence. They are actually meant for pleasure whereas Ebooks are just a supplementary to those who are having problem in buying, or may be for some other reason are not taking it seriously. Book, the paper one is a quite valuable possession for book lover. Its an asset. Not many people take books that way.

When it comes to books I will always favour the traditional physcial book over the ebook! I love books and I read a lot. I also love technology but when it comes to the common book I don't think an ebook is a good idea. Everyone has their own choice regarding this but I like building up a small library and I collect different books from time to time. I love to see them gather dust in my own home and then when I pick up a book I like to blow the dust away and see it fall away, this is funny I know but there you go. I get a sense of achievement when I read any physical book, there's just so much pleasure to be had in this. Andrew

Hi Andrew,
I completely agree with you. There is something in those traditional books that makes them lovely objects. Ebooks are not objects. You just read Ebooks and then forget all about them, or perhaps even delete them from your system. Book lovers treat traditional books as a precious article and keeps them as if they are actually preserving them. Its much more than just a book to them.

A doctorate in Literature? I am afraid of you guys. My ex was doing doc in literature too, and in Bengali. I am allergic to bengali since. Lolzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Just kidding buddy. Yeah, I know that sort of reading. When I was preparing for GRE I used to read that much. Reading on those days was more like an addiction to me. It is then when I came to realize that no field is superior than the other. All actually have equal importance. When brought up together, they make a complete sense. Reading has always made remarkable changes in me.
Pleasure meeting you friend

Certainly, reading paper books is a unique experience and a lot fun. And by the way not all ebooks are free. You might get a pirated copy of it but if you see most of the ebooks cost some money. It's just that other people share it for free by spreading it's copies across the internet.
Whatever it is, reading books in the traditional manner is much better than reading ebooks.

Hi,
I absolutely agree with you. Paper books are collectors' items. They are just not meant for reading but for keeping as a quite valuable possession of a book lover. But sometimes when you are really not interested in anything other than the subject matter of a book and have no intention of keeping it you choose an Ebook. I wonder if all those readings of mine would ever be possible without those Ebooks.

Hi getbiswa,
I'm also an avid reader, but I'm more into inspirational/romance/series books kind of girl. True, paperback books are more comfortable and handy, but lately, I'm into Ebooks. They save me a trip to the bookstore, and of course, it helps me save a lot of money because they are free. They are advantageous in a big way. The only disadvantage of this, is reading through your computer, and after a while, it can strain your eyes after staring in it for too long. But nonetheless, it's free, so the little discomfort is worth it.

Hello,
I can tell you are an avid reader. I know it from the way you write. Yes, the main advantage of Ebooks is that you can get it free (though I don't know if that would be a copyright violation). Some file sharing sites upload scanned version of a paper book. Don't know if that is legal, but I don't really care as long as its free. Those ebooks or any documents can be read through your computer. Thats true.
