Do you see a lot of litter where you are?

I was coming home from work today and was surprised to see more litter than usual along the side of the road. I normally don't see a lot which is probably why it stood out so much to me. I think it may because of the weather we are having that the city isn't able to clean it up..but I thought that people just weren't littering as much as they used to. There are some pretty hefty fines in my area for littering. I hate to see litter on the side of the road. So what about you? Do you see alot of litter in your area? What kind of fines are there to help prevent it?

I will carry it back home or the distination im going to then throw it away. Also im not useing paper products in my home. I use things i can wash and reuse.

Ive been in a conversion for at least a year. Im also stopping the useage of plastic in favor of stainless steal and glass. I will still need toilet paper though. Instead of paper napkins i use a washcloth. I dont use paper towels but instead i use those white cleaning rags.

Hey Jen! I hate to say it, but where I live there is always alot
of litter! And it really bothers me because there are garbage
cans all over and people still throw food containers and papers
all over the ground and there is just no reason for it! There
are supposed to be fines for littering, but there is no one
to enforce them! The police are too busy sitting in their
cars talking to each other or handing out tickets for other
things! When I go to Florida to see my Mom that is the first
thing I notice is how clean it is! And as soon as the plane
starts to land in NY it looks so dirty and disgusting!

It seems thatt bigger cities are much worse for litter. So many people and one srapper per person adds up to a bunch. I do wish it was enforced a bit more. I would think that people would want the place they live to be clean.
How are you doing anyway? You been ok?

I work in a restaurant, and one of my responsibilities each day is to sweep all the trash out of our parking lot. It never ceases to amaze me how much crap people can toss out in one parking lot. I usually sweep up about 3-4 dustpans full of stuff off our lot. I have gotten as many as SEVEN dustpans full at one time out there though. It is sad that people will just throw their crap out like that, though, instead of doing the right thing and finding a trash can to put it all in. What is even worse, and this is a testimony to the laziness of some of the dumba$$es that frequent our restaurant, is that there are TWO large trash cans that sit out on our patios all night...one on each side of the building...and people are too damn lazy to walk up there and put their trash in those cans. They would rather toss it out for someone else to have to clean up...

I live in an urban area, and there are lots of people here. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people here who do not seem to care about things like littering. I wish I could find out where some of these people throwing this stuff out live. I would sweep it all up and then take it and dump it on their doorsteps...

That's terrible! It's amazing how people can be so disrespectful. There are some resturants that hire people to just do the parking lot because it can be such a huge job. It's just nuts how people will just dittch stuff out the window..especially that kind of stuff! Garbage cans have never been hard for me to find...that's for sure.

I know just what you mean. I used to work in fast food and I had to do lot check everyday. You wouldn't believe all the stuff people throw out. I was only supposed to pick up the big stuff people threw out, though, not the little stuff, because as I'm sure you probably already know, I didn't have time to pick every little bitty thing. I was going by what my mother always taught me in that case. We didn't have any trash cans outside or patios but we did have a dumpster out in the back. Kathy.

Well dear friend. I live in Bangladesh where people are not much aware of cleanliness. But the city (Kushtia) I live in is cleaner than other Districts of Bangladesh. Litters scattered around here and there is a common scene of this country. But it's a matter of hope that now people here are getting aware of this problem and the local aothority is also taking necessary steps in this concern to keep the city clean. Have a nice day.

Hi, JenInTN. Yes, I have seen litter along side of the road. People have even littered in my front yard. Sometimes, I would see people walking by and they would just throw their trash on the road. This is common where I live at. I am sure that we have laws for littering. I just have not seen anyone punished for this. I hope that they get punished too!

I would be very angry if I saw someone walk by and toss something in my yard! It's a shame that people don't have any more respect than that. I bet one or two of the $500 fines in my area would keep them from littering everything up..to bad I haven't seen many people get the fine either.

Heyya Jo! I think it's because the snow has kept the road crews from tending to it. I just hate to see it and when your not used to it, any amount stands out. I just can't believe the road crews have so much work to do. I hate it. Thanks for responding.

No not at all thankfully. I'm like you I would hate to see litter around. When I lived in New York the wind would blow litter all to the front of my fence. So every other day in the spring and summer time I would be out there sweeping the mess. I can't believe how someone can just be walking by and drop a wrapper on the ground. Or the best is when driving and you see some one ahead of you drop a brown bag of garbage out the window. Its so disgusting and I guess these people don't care about living with garbage around them.

One thing I have to say about S. Florida is that the litter problem isn't too bad. I occasionally see some low-life type throwing stuff out of his car but not very often. Maybe it's because I live in a heavily populated area and having so many witnesses around all the time acts as a deterrent, I don't know. I would like to think that people have become more responsible and sophisticated but then I drive to some other areas and I see that's not really the case.
I never could understand how people could just throw trash anywhere but then I saw the TV show "Hoarders" and I saw people that live in trash and clutter in their own homes so throwing it out the window is no big deal for someone like that I guess. Maybe someday all people will have enough respect and consideration for everyone else to save their trash for a trash can.

I have seen that show before and it is crazy! Clean house is another show that I watched that has amazed me. We don't have a huge problem with it here either but when there is any litter, it really stands out. The countryside here is beautiful and trash is just like a smack in the face. I have been hiking before and come upon places that people have used for dumping sites and it makes me so mad I can't stand it. I have heard that S. Florida is beautiful..the furthest south I have been is to St. Pete. Thanks for the response and take care.

We must have some responsible citizens where I'm at..they walk and usually clean up while doing so. I was driving the other day and was behind a car full of teens at a stop light...shockingly-they decided to clean out their car while waiting! Now where's a cop when you need him!? It's aggravating sometimes!

That's great there are people there that show effort in keeping their area clean. Kids are the worst I think for throwing stuff out. They just don't understand it seems. I can't see why though because the "green" effort has been going on for a while now. My own children have participated in school projects to promote it. Thanks for the response.

I agree with snug. I live near a school and there is a lot of litter dropped by kids, I'm assuming. There are just mounds of gum near a sewer grate at my house which is utterly disgusting. But around my area there is a $500 fine for littering which seems to be a lot to me. For one piece of litter $500 is a lot. (Maximum fine is $2000)

Around my house there isn't a lot but in Detroit there is definitely is. They try to keep it clean but so many people litter anyways! It's sad. Detroit used to be so beautiful and some parts still are but now people are burning down buildings and destroying everything. I don't understand. Where I like the most you see littered on the road is road kill.

I have only been to Detroit for an overnight when a flight of mine was delayed and it seemed to be a beautiful city. I wish I could have had time to explore it a bit. It is a shame that people trash a city up like that though. I just hate litter. Thanks for responding.

I see it all over around here. Once in awhile it ends up in my yard and the kids or I will pick it up. The guy across the street has a ton of stuff in his yard and on the road in front of his house right now, but he never bothers picking it up. That might be why people don't feel bad about littering in his yard.

Hi lilybug! You have a point that when people see a place littered up that they don't feel as bad about throwing out some of their own. I hate litter and it was a shame what I saw today. I hate that your yard gets littered. I bet that's very aggravating. Take care and thanks for the response.

Wow..thanks for the link. I am really glad to know that the city you live in is so well maintained. We usually don't have a lot of issues with litter in my area but when I saw the street today on the way home, I was sad. I guess it is because of the weather here having been so bad. Thanks again and take care.

i am proud to be born and raise here at this city. when i met my wife and we started living together we live at the city where she was born, but i cant stand there. it was dirty and people around has no disipline. when i explained to her that it was better for us to live at marikina i convinsed her but not that easy. for she has no relatives there that she can call in case of emergency. but we are here now for almost 8 years and i know she loved it already the first day we moved here. in your case it is understandable that the carbage can not be collected. that happened also to us after the heart breaking strom last september. but it will be okay again as soon as the weather normalize. dont worry.

It always feels good to live in a cleaner place. It's hard to make a big change like that but I can tell she feels like it was for the better. I can't wait until they get it cleaned up. I bet there was a lot of work to be done after that flood. Much more than what I'm on here fussing about..lol..Take care.

I do see some litter. The correction department sends out groups of prisoners and such along the roadside to clean up. Also different groups in our state adopt areas of the highways and keeps it clean. I remember when my ex-husband and I came back down into the states from Canada. We drove down into Seattle and I rememember how dirty it was compared to British Columbia we had just left. Ugh!

I think litter has become a big problem nowadays. You are right that we can see many litters around us on the road. This is not only the government problem, but this is our problem. I think modern people should rethink about what is the actual meaning of discipline. Many modern people don't know what is the essence of discipline. Some people, especially rich people, they think if this world is belonging to them only. But the fact is this is our world. We can preventing such problem by our own daily habit. Start from small thing such as always littering on the bin. From a small thing we can start to keep our world clean. Have a nice day and happy mylotting.

I see a lot of it around here. In fact when I lived in Maine you saw very little. Once I lived here about 2 weeks in NC, I couldn't help but realize that people don't care what this state looks like. In fact I was horrified, to see bags of trash thrown beside of the road, as well as regular litter. To me that is just wrong. They have very few fines here and they don't enforce it. Its a shame really because the state would be so pretty with less litter.

I know what you mean. I have been through beautiful states before that have been ruined by litter. I can't understand why people want to trash up the area that they live in or even visit. We do have some pretty hefty fines here and they are enforced if the police catch them..but that's the key..who sees them? Thanks for the response.

Well, here in England there are people who look out for those flouting the smoking ban or if they leave their "dockers" on the pavement instead of placing them in the bins provided. However, there doesn't seem to be the same level of attention placed on those who litter the streets. It is a problem all over the country...even in the countryside, which always saddens me. Nowhere is sacred! A new thing is people chucking litter out of their cars instead of taking it home with them. To me, that is the ultimate in laziness and I really wish there was a clamp-down. I am amazed that even where you are (where there are fines) people still dump litter. You could be right though; it could be something to do with the weather you've been experiencing. I'd like to think so, anyway. Don't want it to become a bad habit like over here lol.

There is nothing worse than litter all over a beautiful countryside. We do have some pretty high fines here and it surprises me that there was that much of it. I don't see much litter usually. I would like to think it's because of the weather too. Thanks for the response.
