Hello Mylotters, I have a 6 year old black Labrador. He doesnt chew on furniture or anything he shouldnt. I guess dogs have to chew, so I try to get him durable toys. Ive tried the Kong toys but he manages to chew it so bad, the squealers dont work anymore haha. The fabric around the toys is all chewed up and I keep cutting off pieces so he wont eat them. Id love to get him a soft toy also but Im afraid he'll eat it all and that'll make him sick. Does anyone know of a safe toy out there that he could really have fun with and I wouldnt have to worry about him chocking or eating some toxic material?

we have a german sheperd who is almost 2 years old, and a jack russel/austrailian sheperd who is about 8, and the one toy i found that both of them loved and have had for over a year now is a bone.. its not a rawhyde bone or anythings, it is an actual bone, that still had bits of beef and fat on it which really got them into it. They sit and chew on them for hours, and havent even made a dent in them. Also hard toys such as bones, and even sticks help clean the dogs teeth. If there is one thing i've learned is that your dogs teeth connect to their inner health. If your dogs teeth are bad, then chances are they are not too healthy on the inside, so make sure you can do everything you can to keep there teeth nice a white and healthy. Anyways, that has been the best toy we have purchased for our dogs, and really helped especially since out german shepered was attached to a teddy bear and eventually had ripped out all of the stuffing and all that remaind was the body, so we were constantly having to go and pick up the cotton stuffing so that he wouldn't eat it. Good luck.

The actual bones are a good idea, especially for a bigger dog such as a lab. The dog will love you even more for it. Go to your local butcher or meat market and ask if they have any bones that would be suitable for your dog. If they don't at that time ask them if they ever have them in (they will0 and what day is best to come back for the bones. Basically they are soup bones but great for dogs. Also, if you find that the bones are too large, you can ask that the butcher cut them for you. They have saws that are made for this and can be done quickly as well. Most butcher shops will do this. I would avoid the rawhydes as these can cause the gums to bleed but are also a choking hazard. Do not ever leave your dog unattended with a raw hyde. As for the kongs, they are guaranteed you know. Dogs are not suppose to be able to shred them. I would contact King and tell them that you have yourself a dog that goes right through a Kong and see what they say.

Hello Kschilling and EvrWonder, Thanks for the advice. I did have real bones for him. He got 2 of them when he was about 2 yrs old. He never chewed on anything other than his toys. He started as a pup to chew furniture but I managed to have him stop with a treat. Now, his 2 bones.....know that Miky is never left alone. He would play with his bones and it was great to watch him throw them up in the air, catch them, bite the devil out of them haha.....but last year, on a weekend, he swallowed one bone !!!! We were so worried, I called the vet hospital to find out if it was dangerous. They said it could get stuck anywhere between the throat and the stomach or the intestines. So we took him in for X-Rays. We could clearly see the bone in the stomach. The problem was, would it get stuck, go through, risk piercing the intestines or would it dissolved?!?!? He was throwing up but not the bone. They didnt want to perform surgery for nothing so we were advised to wait a few days and watch him. I was SO worried. Finally, after 3 days, he threw up the bone and it was much smaller, so it had started to dissolved. We still have his other bone, but Im not giving it to him anymore. Im way too afraid that he'll swallow it again by accident. I cant give him rawhides, he's allergic to them. I have to bake his treats and theres only 2 type of foods he can eat. I cant give him any cheap toys either, it makes him sick. The Kong he can play with and I'll take your advice EVRWONDER and I'll call Kong and let them know that I have 6 Kongs that are all shredded. Thank you both for your suggestions.

Preiti our pet - Preiti, when she was little a tornado indeed!
My little one was all over the house and garden chewing at every thing chewable. So many of my plastic mugs were torn to smithereens, door mats, her own foam bed, the works. And this lasted until she was around 18 months. I used to buy those eatable factory made bones which she finished in seconds - quite an expensive affair really! But now she is the best pet around, loving, cuddly and all that a pet should be. Have patience is all what I can tell you. Your pet too will sober down but see that your pet is not harmed in anyway while chewing objects that could be dangerous.

Hello Allknowing. Your dog seems to be quite tiny, too bad we cant see her better. Im sorry he went around chewing on everything. Mine started with the leg of a chair and I stopped him right away by giving him treats and telling him he was such a good boy and he stopped but I know I need to give him something to chew on. I bought many Kong Toys and they last for a while but then he manages to chew through them. I dont mind that he does, I buy him another one. I was hoping I could find some other toys that he could play with and not chew through them. He's already more quiet since he's 6 yrs old. I guess the toy was more for me than him. As you can see in the picture I posted, he's on his couch with his Kongs and a stuffed toy. I think it would be cute if he could keep a stuffe toy but when he plays with it, he breaks it in about 5 minutes. So the stuffed toy in the picture was for the benefit of the picture. Thanks for your answer.

I used to have those for him also but turns out he was allergic to them. I bought some toys at the dollar store but there is something in the plastic that didnt agree with him either. I try to get fabric toys but of course he goes through them. He is ok with the KONG plastic, but he manages to chew it all to pieces haha. Ive emailed KONG about this and awaiting a reply from them. Thanks for the suggestion. PS: he had 2 bones he uses to play with, real bones and one day he swallowed one by accident. After being worried sick and a trip in the middle of the night to the hospital, we decided to stick with BIG toys for him now.
