Did man create God or did God create Man?

This is a question that is often hotly debated, yet no side has ever been able to convince the other that they are right. Personally, I do not believe in separation theology and feel that the only God is the Divine that is within each and everyone of us. There is no doubt in my mind that ancient man, not understanding his divinity, felt that there had to be some great creature or creatures outside of himself, that created all the things he did not understand. History confirms that they created many Gods, one that controlled thunder and lightning, another that was God of the rain, another of the wind etc. There were hundreds of Gods and they sometimes fought each other just as mankind did. Humans created these Gods, so they naturally had human traits such as anger and were often very violent. "God is angry with the wicked" was a phase repeated during a thunderstorm, even in some parts of the western world, as little as one hundred years ago. The other part of the question is of course, did God create man? Although the human mind cannot fathom it, many believe that God has always existed and because we are one with God, the spiritual man has also always existed. Whether or not God created physical man, is I feel of little importance, as is whether or not we believe in Darwin's theory of evolution. When men and women decided to manifest in the earth, the body was there, and that's all that matters. Could we discuss this and what are your thoughts? perhaps someone who has studied ancient mythology could had to this.

Here is my theory on the whole existace of God. If you look aroung us, everything that exists had to have been created in some way, shape, or form. We were created by our parents, this computer was created by us, buildings are created by wood, that was created by trees, that were created by air, water, and soil. Even the sun was created by particles reacting in outer space. I challenge you to try to think of something that was created by something that just exists. Even when you think you have thought of something, if you think about it for a second you'll find that you were wrong, trust me, I've tried. If we trace this back all the way to the beginning, there must have been some omnipitantly existing being, thing, whatever you want to call it, that started this whole process. This being would have actually had to posess the ability to reason to begin this whole process. This being must be God. It doesn't matter if you are referring to the christian god, buddah, allah, it's all the same idea. This is my logically scientific reason for the existance of God. I say scientific because it does not rely on anyting in the bible or "proof" of maricles, it's simply common sense reasoning. How about wrapping your head around this for a second though. There are four basic scenarios for the existance of God. 1. One believes in God and he really does exist. This person is rewarded with eternal happiness for his or her belief. 2. One does not believe in God and he really does exist. This person is punished with eternal damnation for his or her belief. 3. One believes in God and he does not exist. This person is no further ahead nor behind where they already were. 4. One does not believe in God and he does not exist. This person is no further ahead nor behind where they already were. Looking at these four scenarios, one can determine that, since you basically have nothing to lose, It makes sense to believe in god. The only way you stand to lose is if you do not believe and you are wrong. This is just my two cents. Ok more like my two thousand dollars but I've spent a lot of time thinking about this subject and trying create a logically, un-opinionated, un-biased argument about God.

@ thebeave, just one question, if every thing was "CREATED" then who created God?.... if God, does not needs to be created, then i believe even other things can originate from energy or anything else... further more, you sound defensive, like someone who wants to be on a safe side, not believing in God changes everything about you, we have to take responsibility on what we do and how we do, one gets away from follow the herd mentality, you now know that you are doing good things in your life, helping others without fear, its tells you that you are a good person, you tend to respect law and other human beings and other races...

Hi thebeave, Thank you for responding and it's clear that you've put a lot of thought into this. I believe in God but that God is within all of us, in fact within all living creatures. I don't think of God as a sort of superman who lives somewhere in space and who judges everything we do. Everyone has a right to believe or not believe but of course most people say that you must believe in a certain way. Even though we are part of God, we do not lose our individuality and the only judgment is self judgment. Again my thoughts only, everyone has a right to their opinion. Blessings.

I myself an a religious person and do believe in God. The reasons I came up with these arguments was to attempt to present an argument to someone who doubted the existance of God without using words like "It says in the bible" or "My religion says." The "who created God" question is my whole point, he couldn't have been created he was just eternally existing, unexplainable maybe but definately logical. I don't know it's just my ideas anyway. I do like this duscussion though, it's nice to see the different viewpoints.

I know its a good question, but the point here is If god exists, then why did he create us, We created computer because we wanted simplification and modernization in our lives, its a technological advancement for human beings. The question for religious fanatics is... If god created us it means he needed us and hence he created us... if thats the case, whats the need for us to praise him or request him to protect us, and if we were "its" creation, i am sure as hell, that he must have tried again and he must have succeeded in it, hence he is paying more attention on better form of our creation, its like invention for need. If our creation was accidental like accidental pregnancy, i don't see how accidents can be judged by god and bifurcate our actions to lead one to heaven or hell. If god exists how does it matter? If god does not exists, it sure as heaven matters because then we need to understand that we are alone who can protect the future of human beings, bring about more inventions, reduce pollution and protect trees and help eachother without thinking too much about race, colour or preachings of someone who in the name of god is creating hatred in the minds of adolescents. Cheers!

Of course it could be said that computer was here all the time just waiting for someone to come up with the idea... but just because it could be said, does not make it a fact... Does it? And thing about solving problems, that is exactly what is creating problems, i mean, why can't we just go about our business and families, the fact is there is no point of our existence which is a hard core fact, the purposes that we have are too insignificant, someone in future will destroy it, change is inevitable, years ago there were stenographers, then there came typewriters, today there is a computer, tomorrow there will be robots, life will move on... the point is whatever we do, cannot be ever so important cuz it will phase out one day. If spirits are cyclical, population would not be increasing at the rate they are now, where were all the spirits so long... waiting for 21st Century? I read a lot of considerations, beliefs and feelings in your statement (I feel, I believe, I consider) You are trusting your beliefs, your considerations, your feelings, you should rather question them to the core, untill you stop somewhere, don't feel tired or wrecked while asking questions....

I believe that God created us in his image. Each human being is created on the image of God and that all of us are worth as we are the son of God. Many writers have pondered on the idea that God is created by man. I don't subscribe to this point of view.

hi there, with all the respect, i'd like to know how do you think the whole the universe started? i mean you could say that the big bang theory or something like that, but who did that?? who or what??

Why does there have to be a "who or what" that did it? If you insist there must be, then who or what created whoever or whatever caused the big bang? Either way, you end up with something that is original and uncreated. Those who believe the Universe is without prior creator believe the original uncreated thing is something the existence of which is demonstrable to everyone. Those who believe it was something prior require accepting the unprovable on faith.

Hi guilleglad, Thank you for your comment. It isn't that I don't believe in God but that I don't believe in the God that man has created. I believe that God is all that is and we are all one with God. We are not our bodies but spiritual beings having a human experience. There is nothing supernatural about God and everything happens for a reason, just as we all had a purpose in coming here. Blessings.

I really believe in God ,and I truly believe that God created men ,but to me almost everything still remains a mystery. We have Science on one side claiming evolution ,and we have Theology on the other side claiming the existence of a supernatural being. I also, believe that we have good and bad inside our souls ,and is up to us to follow the spiritual path. At the end what matters is what we do to make the World a better place since love can produce miracles.

If man is God manifesting as human, then you could argue that God created man. But on the other side, as a human manifestation of God, we all create our own worlds. If you are referring to the beings man has created to represent God, those are strickly a human creation to explain the unexplainable and create a comfort zone.Hope this helps the discussion.

Perhaps the ancients understood that there had to have been a superior being that created the universe. However, like so many people today, they weren't able to get their minds around a god that was or is eternal and perfect, so they created god as they wanted him to be, limited and with flaws.

Hi 6precious, Thank you for commenting and I think you are right.Any God made by man would have been like man, but with super powers. He would have gotten angry, because they got angry. He would have been a God of punishment because because they understood little else. He would have fought with other Gods because they couldn't imagine anyone not fighting. When some started talking about a God of love and peace, it was such a new idea that even to this day, many don't understand. Blessings.

If you are a true religious believer, you must believe that God created man. No other aolution could be realized. God made the world and he could be the only one to create man as well.

I believe that there may be a higher power that we don't understand. And in the midst of attempting to comprehend it we as men and women have created dieties to try and explain what is greater then us and mystery to us.

On many old maps and pictures you will see a representation of 'winds'. They are usually depicted as cherubs or old men with puffed out cheeks blowing hard. Nobody (except a child, perhaps), of course, believes that the wind really is like that but it's a convenient and amusing way of personalising the idea of 'wind'. Just as we can't actually see air, we cannot really see God but, somehow, many people have come to the conclusion that He is 'there' and have found it necessary to 'personalise' Him in various ways. Man didn't create God but he did create an image (or various images) which serve to represent what He means to us. Just as a child might really fancy that the wind was some large, shady being blowing hard, so many people imagine God in the form of a man sitting up in the clouds somewhere that one can pray 'to'. That image is created by us and it may have some elements of truth in it, depending on the person holding the image. At any rate, it is a convenient fiction that can help people to find out what He really is. The trouble is that, if one accepts the image as the whole truth, it can sometimes seriously hinder our relationship with God.

Hi owlwings, A very well thought out response, thank you for sharing. Man created God in the sense that he needed something to explain what he couldn't understand. This of course doesn't mean that there isn't a higher power. Blessings.

I believe in God and I believe in the Bible so I can say that I believe God only created man and he also made woman out of man. there is no one can create ocean, mountains, wind, planets, stars, universe, but God. God is almighty and have a power. Some theory are just made my man because God gave us brain to function and he also gave us free will on what we want to believe in. So I believe God is the only one who made this. For me God do not look human, I don't what he looks like but I believe in his power and his mercy.

Hi grecychunny, Thank you for your comment and I don't think of God as human either. As for the Bible, I don't take it literally but if Christians tried to follow the teachings of Jesus, it would be enough. We have to remember that millions have never seen a Bible but most have the holy book of their religion, which they believe to be the truth. I guess the debate will continue for a long time to come. Blessings.

If you are one who truly seeks the truth, you must explore all the possibilities. You must search for God. If God really exists, then He can be found. In finding God, you will discover an Intellect far far above what we deem as intelligent. We are ants.We are all spiritual beings in our true natures just like God. We are made in His image. That isn't talking about this physical world. Spiritually, we are all connected. God is Unconditional Love with the highest of intellect.

I would like to post questions first. How can man create God,when he can't even know sometimes how to solve his own problems? How can man create God,when he can't even make a mountain smaller? How can man create God,when he can't stop hurricanes? How can man create God, when he can't find solutions to stop plagues and outbreaks? How can man create God, when he cant even make a new planet or new moon or new star? How can man create God, when he often fail to distinguish right from wrong? HOw can someone as lowly as man create an all-knowing entity called God? How can someone as imbalanced as man can create God who has done all amazing things and kept everything in balance. How can someone as someone like a man thinks he created God? Only an atheist cannot answer. And i am entitled to my own beliefs and opinions. And God created me so that i may glorify His name, most especially in instances like this. (^_^)

Hi lipstick, Thank you for you response and I agree that everyone has a right to express their opinion. By asking did man create God, people are really asking; is there really a God or did early man come up with the idea that there had to be a God to explain the things that he did not understand? I believe in a higher power that exists within all living things. I also believe that we are spiritual beings having a human experience and that there is a purpose to life. Blessings.

Well everything depends upon your belief. As I think it is a debate, which will never end. If you ask this question from Spiritual person, then he will definately say that GOD created Man. And similarly if you ask same question from the person who does not believe in GOD(or who is more practical), then he will say that GOD is nothing but a imagination of a human mind.

Hi ravi, Thank you for commenting and I agree that it depends on our belief. It can easily be understood that early man would have come up with the idea of God to explain what he didn't understand, but that doesn't mean that there is no God. I happen to believe that God is within us but I know everyone don't believe that way nor should they. Blessings.
