Buildings vary. There are big, small, new, modern or old ones. Others have elevators while some don't. There are times that we visit offices located in either of these buildings for varied reasons. Do you always make it a point to know where fire exits are located in a building, especially if it was the first visit thereto? Please share your thoughts.

This is so very sad to admit, but I don't pay attention to where the fire exits are in a building. It doesn't matter if it somewhere that I've been time and time again or if it is somewhere that I've never been. I figure that if there is a fire in a building that I am in then I will follow the crowd exiting the building because I know that my head won't be on straight in the case of an emergency so it wouldn't matter if I knew the correct procedure in advance or not.

Hi Dorannmwin, Well, you're not the only one. I don't do that, too. That is especially so when I am in a hurry to have my purpose in that building done and that's it ... I go in and out as soon as it's done. We don't wish something bad happens when we are inside the building. We go with the crowd, that is the best to do under the circumstances.

I am very keen on traveling and overseas accommodation usually have fire exit details in several different languages on the inside of the door of the guest room. I always make sure I know how I would escape in the event of a fire. If a fire happens it is not safe to go in the elevator. My sisters mother-in-law lit a candle and went to sleep. When she woke up her apartment was on fire. She was lucky that she got out and nobody was hurt. I often walk past a fire station and it has bill board posters warning about the danger of chip pan fires. It is smoke that can kill people and it is very dangerous.

building - buildings in the heart of the city
Hi Maximax8, That is very good of you. You are somebody who always puts importance on safety, which all people need to do. It is surely a very good practice of hotels to advise the clientele about this very important information. During power outages that last very long and which sometimes happen during the night, we light candles, too. But I am very careful in handling lighted candles especially if I sleep with one. What I do is place the lighted candle inside an big empty can of milk. That way, if ever it falls down, it does not burn anything as it is inside the can.

I am not the type who primarily checks on where the fire exit is. But it is good to know where it is just in case. Like for some companies they really show you where it is because there are some who wants to know beforehand. There are also some companies who uses it to go up or down one floor and that helps exercise people instead of riding the elevators all the time.

building - tall building in the heart of the city
Hi Sublime03, Yes, it is good to know where they are. Sometimes, we tend to ignore it or do not bother to know where these are located. Elevators are dangerous to use during fires and it is the stairs where people head. Some people ask where the stairs are maybe because they want to do a little exercise going up and down. Still others just want to find out where fire exits are. Other buildings have built ladders on each floor on the side of the buildings. It is always good to know where they are because we don't know when an accident occurs. It is always safe than sorry.

Unfortunately I dont. But I'll try to be more observant with the place/building I've been. I like to see buildings with exit signs like in hotels for easy directions.

building - tall buildings
Hi Maria1081, Sometimes, we don't bother to know where these fire exits are. Most modern buildings are appropriately provided with signs which are necessary for the safety of the building occupants and the public. I personally think it is necessary to be observant and to be able to know where these fire exits are. It helps to be well informed especially with regard to one's safety.
