I want to get started in the field of graphic design. I started taking some online classes but I really don't want to spend two years getting a degree in graphic design? Do I need one? How did you get started as a freelancer?

If this 2 years of learning is worth, you're not spending. 2 years of knowledge is really strong when you're doing your portfolio, brings more credibility.
And the portfolio is the best way to get started.

Carblover, I have been in the ICT field for so long and know for a fact that graphic designing is an inborn talent and everyone cannot do it. You must have a knack for it and what is most important is not a degree but creativity and applying your skills to do various projects. If you are really good, you could build a very good portfolio of projects and this would be your passport to better jobs rather than a degree. Yes, a degree can help you when you aspire for higher positions, but then you would be in management rather than in graphic design.
