Is peanut butter safe for dogs? Should I get organic? Sugar-free?

I have read enough to be convinced that it is safe to give dogs peanut butter in small amounts. I have two dogs and one of them is a power chewer. Toys don't last with him. So I bought him one of those extra-tough kongs today (you know, the black ones). He gets really neurotic when we leave him, so I was hoping putting a little peanut butter in the kong would occupy him long enough to keep him from finding something to tear up. So as I mentioned I am convinced that peanut butter is safe . . . but should I buy organic or sugar-free? I have heard that sugar is not so great for them. Plus my little girl dog needs to watch her weight and I can't give my little boy something and not give her some. But like I said, it will only be an occasional treat when everyone leaves the house. Any suggestions or insight to different types of pb?

You can put any kind of small treat in the kong. It's an excellent idea as if will give him something to focus on. Also before you go out for an extended leave, give him a good round of ball chase or take him for a long walk. The more exercise he gets the calmer he'll also be.
Yes, Peanut butter is fine for them. It's actually kind amusing to watch them eat it since they love it but it is so sticky that it takes them a long time to get it off their tongues!
You might want to get one of the lowered fat ones rather than sugar free. Also you can easily make your own from peanuts and then you'd know exactly what was in it.
Take care!

Christinawise87, I make peanut butter from time to time. I got the directions from wikihow, just search under peanut butter and it has the step by step instructions.
Basically if you can find a good price on roasted peanuts, you combine them with a bit of peanut oil, I used that instead of the vegetable oil they suggest, I didn't add salt either. Then into the food processor. You will need to use it fairly quickly but you can make smaller batches too. Since it has no preservatives or stabilizers, you will need to stir it every time but that's easy. Very very tasty!

Thanks Tallygirl. My dogs do seem to enjoy it. We have tried taking him for a walk before we leave but nothing seems to do it unless he is distracted when we are leaving and after. Fortunately he isn't often alone since my stepfather works a different schedule than my mom and I do, so he is home during the day with him.

My dogs LOVE peanut butter. I LOVE peanut butter, the way it keeps them occupied for a while with the fun of getting it out of whatever you stuck it in. You need so little, just a scraping on the inside of the KONG or I like the hard plastic lids, say of the peanut butter jar (almost empty) or just the empty plastic jar itself. My girls are small and wouldn't chew up the jar. Keeps them busy for quite a while. I wouldn't give it every day, but it can be fun and yummy for a treat!

llasa apso, shizu and toy poodle mix. Small, smaller and smallest. I've never bought JIF. I usually just use the generic peanut butter.
Try a little taste and see how she does. Like any new food, especially with tiny dogs better to test first, or even check with your vet if she is delicate.
happy tails!

Thanks yea I will check with her vet along with trying bits if okay I am notgonna give her tons. She is special to me. We got her when my daughter was a baby and picked her out and named her then. Sarah thought she was cute and named her her little princess. I believe this is because Sarah means princess and she wanted her puppy to be one too.

Hi Britt; I have never heard of peanut butter with sugar in it.. Just get natural peanut butter. Check the ingredients and be sure that it contains peanuts only.
I asked my pups vet about this at the end of last month. My pup loves peanut butter. The vet assured me that it is alright to feed her peanut butter, if she tolerates it. Dogs can have allergies as well you know. I would try just giving her a tiny bit to start and see how she reacts if at all.
Again, i am not aware of any peanut butter that contains sugar. Any peanut butter I have ever bought is just plain old peanuts and that is it. Beware that peanuts can be fattening, made into butter or otherwise.
Sugar is not recommended for dogs, no.
Simply just check the label and read the ingredients. If there is anything more written there besides peanuts, don't buy it for the dogs. Also get smooth peanut butter, not crunchy. I have found that my pup doesn't bother chewing the peanut pieces at all so I now opt just for plain old smooth peanut butter for her.
You can get regular, just peanuts peanut butter in your local grocery store.

Hi and thanks for your comment(s).
I use Adams peanut butter but also get the store brand from Thrifities. Not sure if you have that store where you are since it is Canadian owned and operated.
The Adams peanut butter maybe available.
Be careful however as Adams has salt as well as peanuts in the ingredients.
I have read that salt, as well as ingredients in other foods such as baking soda can mess with a dogs electrolytes.
You know you can make your own peanut butter.
Just get plain roasted peanuts, unshelled and pop into a food processor, blender or mini handy chopper and puree. Continue to blend until butter forms. It is delicious.
Always store peanut butter in the fridge.

Before you consider giving peanut butter to your dog I would consult with your vet. They know your dog and are responsible for being sure they remain healthy. Most vets won't charge you to walk in without the animal to ask questions, so that shouldn't be an issue. But, I don't listen to "studies". The vet knows more about what will and will not harm animals after all they did go to medical school.

I agree and I will be checking with her vet first. I dont want her to be harmed in anyway! I will make sure what they think and let you all know so that others can see what a vet said. I will be asking first thing in the AM. I will respond then.

Your vet would probably know best, but I think it would be fine to give your dog whatever peanut butter you have in the house. I know lots of people who use regular old Jif peanut butter to give their dogs pills because it's the only way the dogs will take them. I think the natural peanut butter that you find in the organic section of the store would leave quite a mess around the house because the oil separates from the solid peanut butter (you can see it right through the side of the jar), so it's greasier than Jif or other brands.
