My kids came home from elementary school the other day telling me thay had an intruder alert at school that day. I had never heard of this before. I asked them what happened. They said the teachers locked the classroom door and they all got in the corner adjacent to the door and had to be very quiet. It was only a drill and they got rewarded with treats for doing a good job. At the time of the drill they didnt know it was a drill,I guess the same as a fire drill. But they told me they were scared. We had tornado drills and fire drills when I was in school. Its really sad to think that children in elementary school have to think and worry about an intruder. At least I know they know what to do to keep my children safe if someone ever does get into the school.

It is sooo sad that children have to be drilled for something like that but it is good the school is doing that. With all the crazies running around u just don't know what's going to happen next.

It's very scary w/all that goes on in the schools. I was so glad when my youngest graduated 10 years ago. I felt such a relief. Now my grandson will start next school years & i really dread it. No telling what will be going on by the time he gets ready to graduate. I hope they will all be safe.

As sad as it may seem, it's a sign of the times. When I was a kid I remember having to duck under my desk for air raid drills. I was about 6-7 years old. I was in Catholic School and when we heard the air raid signal go off we were all told to get under our desks and cover our heads with our arms over them. It was kind of funny because my teacher, a nun, would crouch behind her desk. To me it reminded me of the witch in the Wizard of Oz when she was slowly melting. I would always start giggling and end up in the Mother Owen's office. (That's what we called the principal.) The Principal would call my parents and then I'd get a lecture from my parents when I got home.
This went on for maybe the first quarter until one day my father and mother asked me just what was so funny about it. I asked them if they remembered the witch in the Wizard of Oz when she was melting? My mother got this light bulb look of the image of what I was saying and then snorted back a laugh as she quickly left the dinning room and busted out laughing in the kitchen. My father, who couldn't make the same quick exit, was left at the table with his head down. I noticed that his shoulders were shaking. He was laughing too, but was trying to keep it under wraps. After they both got themselves together and put their parent faces back in place, they told me that even though the drills at the time may seem funny I had to remember that one day it could be a real drill and then it wouldn't be that funny anymore. I tried, I really did, but I just couldn't stop the giggling. I learned to do it quieter though...lol

They call it lock-down at my daughter's school. She is in first grade and when she first told me about this, it scared me to a certain extent. You are right, we didn't have to worry about things like this when we were children. Now, however, the world is a different place. When I was in school, we didn't have to buzz into the school, we just walked in and out as we and our parents pleased. Now, they have to keep track of every person that is in the school at all times.
Though the thought is scary to me, I really like the fact that the schools are doing everything in their power to make sure that our children are safe while they are in the care of the schools.
