Would you CONFRONT A MYLOTTER if he/she reinvented your discussion? :(

Hello there :) Just thought about this topic because I've seen some of the discussions here being reinvented. Even MY discussions. I should admit, I'm also guilty of reinventing the discussions, but I can assure that THOSE ARE NOT INTENTIONAL. Even if you would review my discussions, those that I unintentionally created has a similar discussion which was few years ago (and I don't really mean that just to get a lot of responses!!) However sometimes, I feel that some mylotters are OBVIOUSLY, INTENTIONALLY recreating a discussion into a different question. :( Like when I just created a new and fresh discussion which has a lot of responders, the next day I would see another "reinvented" discussion of my own. Take note, I'm not claiming them as my "own" discussions.. but sometimes I find it UNETHICAL. If you know what I mean.. Uhhhh! I don't know if it's just me.. but THE QUESTION: do you also feel the same way? Would you CONFRONT a mylotter if you think HE OBVIOUSLY reinvented your discussion? ..or would you report him, or just rate him negative??

I confront and then report! My work is MINE and mine only! I have been asked by others if they can use my discussion elsewhere before they used it but if ever I see MY work used without my permission then I flame up inside and you see a side of me that doesn't show often I have the same reaction when I see a discussion (or a response) which was stolen from someone else. I read a lot on here and often bump into something that I have seen previously. It is unfair to use the work of others and if it is coped word for word, it is also an offence! We are also told in the Guidelines not to repost our own dicussions. We can 'bump' them up by adding a comment and they reappear in the recent activity but we are not supposed to re-post them.

Another question: Do you comment on the discussion or do you confront him through a private message and report him?

Getting an idea from your discussion is okay, I think. But if he copied word for word and then just added a bit BUT ALL with the same thought..then that would really flame me up. :( thanks for the response sandra and God bless

Hello, Diana. We're of one mind on this one. I turn ugly when I see my stuff being copied. There's absolutely no excuse for it, as the potential for creating discussions is limitless. Even the same discussion topic can become a new one with a different question or angle.

I say why bother. Spend your time doing new posts. Not everyone reads each and every post. You might get readers the other one doesn't and visa versa. I have noticed this alot on discussions about soap operas. I have also noticed that you can't always find things when you do a search so as not to post a same/similar topic. I'll search to see if a topic exists and not find anything, do my post and then at the bottom of the page of my post... there are a couple existing topice and I wonder why they didn't show up in my search. THing is.. I'll go and check those couple just to see who said what to collect as much info as I can on what I am talking about. Sometimes, I find things in the other posts that didn't show up or not posted in mine. Is it done intentionally? Who knows. There are so many people on MyLot and all with different ideas and thoughts, but then again, lot of us have hte same ideas and thoughts.

I agree. Sometimes it doesn't show up in search results that's why it can be really confusing if your idea of the discussion has already been made or not ;(

That happens to me almost every time I search. I put in my topic, and nothing comes up. So I start a new discussion about my topic. All posts have (at the bottom of the page) discussions similar.. and sure enough.. there is at least one discussion already there about my topic. I can't understand why it didn't show in my search as I used the exact same 'title' in the search as in the discussion, but it doens't come up in a search.

in a very obvious situation you can do it to the robber. if you could not do it, ask a friend to do it for yourself. in both situations, you can always report it because it is a clear and obvious abuse and it's totally prohibited, not only in mylot.

Well to answer the question would I confront a mylotter who reinvents one of my discussions. Well it depends whether they gave it their own twist, a new angle in the reinvention or basically reworded it. If they manage to give it a unique angle then I have no issue but if someone just rewords exactly what I said I get cheesed off and usually say something, which often falls on deaf ears. Those occassional members who do seem to do it on purpose and constantly reinvent discussions and ignore advice, then I will report without telling them because I can't be bothered to waste my breath on them.

Well in my opinion is really unethical to you take a discussion from other member and twisted a little bit and post it. But the problem is that is a little bit difficult to prove, because some of the discussions we post are based in issues that are controversial these days, and everybody will talk about it anyways. Also there can be two different persons that have the same idea, that is something perfectly valid, so yes it may be possible that someone reinvent your post, but it may not. It is a 50% situation. You can't be sure if they do it on purpose or not.

I think if it's only the "idea" it's okay. But if it's the same thought then it's no longer tolerable. :) Thanks for the response and take care always :D

Well if it was delibirately copied word for word and without permission I would confront him/her but if he/she ask permission and I approve then it's okay to me. If I saw that I would be angry but just for a few seconds because it's like he/she stole my idea but afterwards I won't care anymore. I think sometimes I commit that act but not on purpose but because I don't know that there is already a discussion like I started and I am sorry if I sometimes unintentionally do that.

I agree.. if it's just the "idea" and not the whole content, I think it's tolerable. But if it's copied word for word then it should be reported instantly :) Thanks for responding artee and God bless you :D

Hi Cecile! How are you doing? I think, we all suffer from 'plagiarism of ideas and thoughts'. Now, people who deny are in self denials. I have read several books similar to "The Secrets". The connectivity is so strong that we are always left with a kind of deja vu! Many times, as you have said, we do it totally unintentionally and we have no idea that someone else has the same idea before me. Some ideas are hackneyed and bound to be repetitive. If you ask me, I don't mind if someone works on my idea and make it a better one. But, it has to be original in his/her own right. Like, the presentation and the rendition has to be original. I think good writers excel in this. However, having said this, I would definitely report if someone copies me verbatim like it happened a couple of months ago. Plagiarism is most contemptible and doing this, curbs our creativity and makes us lesser humans. That's how I feel. Thanks.

Thanks Cecille. I think, it's our responsibility to unveil the reality and we MUST report or do everything to make him/her responsible of his/her act. I think we should be responsible netizens and do our best to make it neat.

I agree with this response mimpi :) I believe all of us are guilty of reinventing discussions, but I'd appreciate it if they made it a better one.. but with all the same thought and no idea improvements? I won't tolerate that. Thanks for responding and God bless!

Hi cecil! You see number of mylotter is increasing day by day and they need to ' create and invent discussions from the given interest. It is possible that some of the discussions get repeated either intentionally or unintentionally. I think, each time the respondents would be different. I do not mind if anybody creates a discussion similar to mine.

If he or she obviously reinvented my discussion of course I will confront him but i make sure I already reported it to Mylot admin so that they are the one who will investigate who is the original. If your discussion have been reinvented you will feel it. And I always thought that reinventing a discussion is intentional, and that person who do it , really have a hard face to do it. I also will do an investigation by myself. To let me see what this mylotter had done to me and then report to mylot admin and then confront. I really don't know if a discussion started by me have been reinvented, because I do it to but it looks really different. Like when the topics is about breakfast, I will be creative with that topic and I will based my topics on my experience.

a lot of times my discussions from my previous account was always hijacked or copied some of them i reported and doesnt know what happened next because you will never know if they are penalized from that but i think they delete duplicated discussions here because i got a few emails that says my response was deleted because the discussion was deleted.im sure Mylot knows how to deal with those idea thieves.you dont have to worry about that.

I believe there are those who created almost similar discussions not because they reinvented or copied but because they suddenly thought of that topic and posted it without knowing that somebody else has previously posted the same. This happened many times here especially on topics that are not really unique. I think here at myLot the probability of posting similar discussion could not be avoided. In the first place even if it is being advised to check first before posting, I don't think all of us have the patience to do so. So in my case, even if I saw a topic similar to my previous posts it does not really affect me at all. I don't really get slighted. I don't have a copyright on the topics I posted anyway. So I don't really bother about myself about this issue. I think if it was really copied then its already the copier's problem. In fact, even mylot does not delete repeated topics as I could observe. There have been repeated topics here but they were posted and discussed just the same. I myself posted a topic which I thought was fresh but later I found out there have been topics almost similar to that so I was sort of embarrassed but later I realized I have nothing to worry about because I did not copy the topic and my conscience is clear.

I agree. Most mylotters are guilty of unintentionally creating the same topic. I won't deny that I too am guilty of it. However if the discussion is obviously copy word for word I think it's no longer tolerable.. do you agree? Thanks for responding and God bless you!

WEll if copied word for word then that is another thing. The copier is guilty of Plagiarism. It is obviously cheating and the person should be given due punishment. I think myLot should have more sophisticated way of detecting Plagiarism so that those who do that here could be detected even without the necessity of reporting the cheater. And by the way, I've learned that the word plagiarism is derived from a Latin word and it means kidnapping. So a person who commits Plagiarism is really a criminal. He may not be stealing a person as a kidnapper does but he is stealing a person's ideas and thoughts. That is a very shameful habit and must be given due punishment.

I guess I haven't come across this problem yet! If someone downright copied my discussion word for word . . . sure I'd report this person! As for posting discussions similar to what I wrote - that's a gray area. I can discuss something about, say, ice cream . . . and maybe someone else has the same thought about ice cream - as would probably a zillion other people. When I post a discussion, most likely I will not have checked to see if anyone else posted that particular discussion . . . so it's possible these other people had not checked either. I wouldn't know if they actually reinvented my discussion or if it's something they truly came up with it on their own. So, to answer the question, knowing me, I would only confront them IF my discussion was copied off of mine . . . otherwise, I would report them and give them a negative rating - and let the myLot admin do the rest! (Hey, and apologies if I ever did this to you . . . I would never copy anyone's discussion - but it seemed like I did it - I did it coincidentally and unknowingly!)

I'd confront them put my two cents in. In the end his discussion would probably end up deleted within the next day or so for not bothering to read the guidelines. We have search options and everything for a reason. So therefore, I feel I should do my part to help out should the need to do so occur. And, I've chewed people out before, so I'll do it again.

hi cecillecarmela oh yes I would as I did the work why should someone else use my thinking to make what should be their own ideas? This is copying someone else and is against mylot rules. I would report the person as I make new discussions always and do nt really re invent my own at all. I do the work so I deserve the pay not someone who was to lazy to come up with their own discussion. I report them not minus them because this is just not right or kosher.

cecillecarmela no not at all as so many times you all assume someone has made a discussion like yours because say you discussed how u nfair you think that teachers have all summer off while I made a discussion about how a teacher I had in grade school affected and changed my adult life, they really are not alike only in that teacher is in each one but mine is not at all like yours so why would you report me or negate or act like a mylot police , too many people here are too eager to report others for the tiniest little thing. I say leave it alone. Only report those who really just copied yours otherwise realize that there are only so manytopics but a zillion slants on them that are all different. so be fair.

Hello, Cecille. In answer to your question, I have had a discussion copied, and I did all three. I confronted the culprit, then put a comment on every response, telling them that she'd copied a discussion I posted 2 days earlier. Then I negative rated her, and then I reported it - as did several other people. The discussion was removed. Copying a discussion is plagiarism, and plagiarism is theft of ideas. I earn a modest income as a writer, and I work hard to produce original pieces. I'm happy for anyone to use my work for free, as long as they credit me as the author. However, when somebody steals my work, I lose all sense of reason, and then look out.

I would get really annoyed if another member came into my discussion and posted a response to purposely de-rail or hijack my discussion If it was an accident, I wouldn't mind and would perhaps join in, but if it was on purpose, I would remind the mylotter in question whose discussion this was and tell everybody to stay on topic

Hello there. My answer would be no. I will not confront anybody just because he/she had a discussion like mine. There could be a lot of reasons why one could end up having a same discussion to the other one. If a user really intend to reinvent my discussion then I'll just let admin handle them. And I won't feel sour even a little bit if they copy my concept. It's nice to have fans. Lol. shadow41
