One factor is English language proficiency. I know it will be easier for those who can speak English language well, especially those people from English speaking country. They have more stock of words in their minds. They can easily find the right words to use to express their ideas. In our country, English is just the second language, but still most people are already fluent. Me, I'm still not that good in English, I just know more of a basic. MyLot serves as a way to improve our English language skills. We can practice here and the good thing is we will not be criticize for our wrong grammar, as long as what we are saying is understandable, it will be fine. How about you, can you easily express your thoughts and ideas in myLot discussions? If not, what do you think are the reasons behind it?

I'm a native speaker, and there are times I have trouble. There are just some thoughts I get, some abstract, but even sometimes concrete ones, that I just can't express; just experience.
One thing I do know, I'm very thankful to these modern word processors, but I fear my spelling will suffer greatly if I have to write anything in long-hand. Silly rules like if words ending in -ence or -ance and -er or -or. I would have to keep a dictionary with me to always check.
Your English here is very good, and I understood with no problem.

Yes, there's a lot of rules, correct grammar that needed to follow, but I think not that necessary unless you are writing in a formal letter or composition. I think what important is that the listeners or readers can understand what you are trying to say. I'm glad my English is understandable, thanks for your compliment. Thank you for your response. Happy myLotting!

It is easy for me to express my thoughts on Mylot discussions. When I read some of the discussion topics, some thoughts will rush to my mind. So, I read the description of that and start writing my response. Once I complete one sentence, the other sentence of my response will rush to my mind. It is very rare when I take time to write response.

Sometimes I can but most of the time no. In fact, I have already missed many discussions when I could have responded to them. I had also skipped some comment making recently. My average rating for my response is hastily-made to irrelevant. Besides, the increase of my post number remains slow. Sometimes i only rely on luck for the inspiration to respond i.e. no brainer discussions and i have more than five posts deleted already as I could recall.

Yes, I also like that sometimes. I like to respond or comment but ended up not done. It's also depends on my mood, if my mind is not fresh enough, then I find difficult to post. Thank you for your response. Happy myLotting!

Well, it depends on the topic at hand. If I'm familiar with it, then type I go. If I cannot think of a response in a few seconds, I skip to another topic. You are doing well, markmoney. Your articles are long which means that you can express yourself well. Keep it up!

Yes, the familiarity of the topic is also one factor to easily express our thoughts and ideas. I am also like that in responding, I only choose those topics that I can relate with and have something to share. Yes, sometimes I can express what I wanted to say, but there were also times I cannot. But thank you for acknowledging my articles. Thank you for your response. Happy myLotting!

it depends on what discussion is it. Sometimes i look for those discussions which can be easily answered particularly about practical matters. But when it comes to some difficult matters like the electronics, the computer, etc. i find it hard to discuss and just browse for another questions.

Yes, it is easier if the discussion is within the scope of our interests. We can be able to say more things about the topic cause we can relate to it. Thank you for your response. Happy myLotting!

Hello markmoney,
I think I am a person who doesn't like to tell all to others. When I first started, I feel that mylot is one of the ways for me to express my feelings. I don't have to confide personally to others but I feel the freedom of telling everything here. That's one reasons why at times, I just can't express my feelings, thoughts or ideas here as I am not used to share almost everything in my real life. I am not good in English too and sometimes, I do find it hard to find a proper word or sentence to better explain the situation in my discussion.

I was born in Italy and had to learn English as a child when my family and I immigrated to Australia. I consider myself fortunate that I learnt the language as a child when learning is so much easier and because of this English has become my first language; my husband does not speak Italian and neither does my daughter so my words, thoughts, dreams etc are all in English. I have a love of writing and expressing my opinions and emotions with the written word but there are days when it is just so much harder to express my feelings than other days but most of the time I think it is a matter of starting and sometimes it just flows...

Because I am a native English speaker, I have no problem at all in being able to convey my thoughts and feelings on this platform. However, I do see that there are some members that do have a difficult time with it because of the fact that they are not native speakers.
As for you, I don't think that I would have even thought that you weren't in good control of the English language if you had not admitted it yourself. You write pretty well.

yes, you are absolutely correct.. that we can practice our english communication skills here in mylot. and i think the reasons why we can't express our thoughts and ideas is that it's hnard for us to translate our local words to english words.. you can't just translate it word for word because it will sound awful and full of grammatical error.

Yes, despite of being a good site, like others, it also has a bad side. Sometimes it becomes bad also due to some bad members. Thank you for responding. Happy myLotting!

Even in my case where my native tongue is English I still have to think and take time to consider a response or a discussion on here. The reason being is that not only is it nice to craft an eloquent piece of prose but you also have to do your best to make sure that what you write is clearly understandable by the many rather than just the few. It’s far to easy to miss construe what someone is meaning through writing and often petty squabbles can start because one person reads and understands something in a completely different manner in which it was originally intended.
But I completely agree that when you put in the effort to try and fine tune your discussions and responses they can aid in the improvement of the written word. I myself still am constantly trying to improve all my contributions and find it great fun by doing so.

I was a little difficulty interpreting a few sentences, as long as other people not misunderstand sentences that I spend I think I need to obtain better. I cannot come face to face and speak directly with English, because maybe my English is still a mess. myLot is a place where people around the world use English as a communication tool, so we should be right to improve our skill here. For speak English and have knowledge about the subject we talk about.

Yes, you are right that, those who comes from English speaking country will be more proficient in writing and speaking English. As for me, English is also my 2nd language but i am always trying my best to improve my English whenever i can. Although i felt my English is still not as good as my friends from the English speaking countries, but i am satisfied with it. Well, at least i can express my feeling and thought whenever i am replying to any of the mylot discussions. Good luck to you.

...Hi there markmoney, I try, but sometimes I feel that I have to explain what I just wrote, so it is not mis-interpreted. I think I have a pretty good command of the English language, but being understood depends also on who is reading the writing. So you have to be careful to read what you are writing as if you did not write it. I take a long time formulating a discussion topic, so that it can be understood by those who read it. Once I am satisfied then, I read it again, then after a little while longer I will post it. Maybe I should not take so long, but I want to be satisfied, so I take the time. We are all trying to do the best we can, to be understood by as many as possible. We keep trying. Take care.

I can express my self and ideas in Mylot easily if I can relate to the topic or discussion. Language is not really a factor. It has more something to do with my knowledge regarding the subject of the discussion. The more knowledge I have about the discussion the better and easier I can express my self and my ideas. However, if I just knew a little about the topic then it is harder for me to respond to a discussion with something that has substance.

Mylot is a good way in improving ones proficiency in English. It helps a lot to improve my writing skills because i am a student and an upper hand in the English language proves to an advantage for me. Well i am able to express my views on mylot quite easily as i do not have any such problems with this language(although it is not my mother tongue). But ya i can sometimes be wrong with my grammar and its great that the people here at mylot don't criticize you for that.
