If you can't afford to go to the vet with your dog, I have heard that using vegetable oil on the dog's fur is helpful. The oil will actually keep the ticks from wanting to attach, it suffocates them.
There is a medicine called Capstar, I heard that it does help to kill off all fleas and ticks within 24 hours. It is said to not only kill the ticks but eggs as well, then follow with a normal treatment.

Hi Sweets
You just pull off everyone you see.
If you treat with frontline be sure you
use the correct one for the size of your dog
and you have to give it a couple of days
to work.
I always use frontline and we never see
ticks on the dogs. They are not outside much.
