What do you like to make with apples when they start to get soft?

I usually buy apples in large bags. Most of the time, we can't eat them all before they start to get soft, but I hate to let them go to waste. Sometimes I cut them up and add some cinnamon and cloves and boil them in some water to add some humidity to the house and make it smell nice. Other times I will use them to make some sort of dessert. Today, I am thinking about making some applesauce.

Hi sunyskies - How about baked apples, or baking them in a crisp or pie. You can also peel, core, slice, cook with sugar,cinnamon/nutmeg lemon juice, cool completely in frig then bottle in 1 qt jars or air tight quart containers and freeze for future baking. You could also core and slice and shallow fry in batter to make fritters, serve wih cream or ice cream, delicious and easy. You could make apple salad with mayo, nestle cream, and cheese. Just mix in a bowl, if you want it sweet add condensed milk. There is a website www.thenewhomemaker/apples that might be helpful to you as well. Good luck.

Thanks! Those are some great suggestions, I especially like the idea of making fritters. I haven't had an apple fritter in ages. I'll have to check out that website, it sounds like it's full of great ideas.

I cut them up and saute them in a skillet. I add some real butter and cinnamon. If you want you can add a little honey or brown sugar too just to sweeten it up a little bit. I can do just one apple or several. It makes a good, pretty healthy dessert!

That's another great idea! My son loves apples made that way. I don't know if it's the proper name for them or not, but I've always called those Escalloped Apples. I know it sounds strange, but I've served them as a side dish with spicy food because it seems to cut the heat on your tongue a little bit. They're really good on pancakes, too. I haven't made them in a long time, thanks for the idea!

sunnyskies Slice your very ripe apples into thing slices and cook with water and sugar and a handful of red hots, little red candies that taste of cinnamon, and give the applesauce a wonderful color and flavor. I have done this a number of times and its really very tasty too. A good dish to serve with roast pork hot from the oven, really so delicious too.

Oh, yes, Waldorf Salad. My grandmother made that, too. I wish she had left me her recipe because mine is never quite as good as hers. She must have added a secret ingredient that made it so delicious. Thanks for the idea!
