I seen a commercial for a product called My Baby Can Read. I don't know if you guys have seen it before, but a little back ground it is a DVD series for babies that helps them learn to read at super young ages. I mean some of these examples they show of a 8 month old reading words on a note card seem so unreal. I thought it would be cool to start a discussion on what you guys think about any commercials that sell or promote products are they real or are they just a hype. I want to hear your feedback. I know I am not the only one wondering so lets work together and figure this out.

I am going to respond specifically about the baby reading DVD's in this space. I do not think they are necessary or even helpful for infants, and can lead to frustration and anger, they also do not overcome learning disabilities in kids. Products like this have been on the market for years, and sometimes well meaning parents who cannot really afford them buy them anyway, believing that they are doing what is right for their baby. I would go for a sign language book before I would buy a reading instructional dvd for my baby. For one thing, a book can go with you anyway, and for another thing, there are studies that show that learning to sign helps children with language development, whereas the method of reading in most of these "Teach your child to read" programs is a method known as idetic reading. That basically means that the child memorizes words. How many thousands of words is your child going to memorize. It is important that children learn phonetic skills as they are learning to read, so that they can be able to incode and decode the words they are reading. I did not teach my son to read, or my daughter, but both did learn early. I did read with them, and to them, and they did not have other issues that would get in the way of their learning. I am often told I am a liar when I tell people how well my son read at the beginning of Kindergarten, but his teacher had eleven of her students tested, it was not my idea. I considered it normal. So, no, I do not think that the baby reading dvd is helpful.

Well thank you for your insight. I am glad you provided it for me. I believe I am gonna start the 1 year old on some sign language hard books and see if that will help out. I also know the 3 year old seems to be super shy even around us his parents, I think being able to telling us by hands will help him express himself a litter better and make him come out of his shell. What do you think?

I think you are on the right track. There are some specific signing books for babies that really simplify the signs. I know people who have used them. I read in another discussion about your concerns for your son. Is it possible he has a hearing loss, or even just ear infections or fluid in his ears? My experience with sign language was in a Head Start classroom, and we had two boys that had cochlear implants. We used signing exact English for them because the goal was to get them to speak. The sign language interpreter had four or five kids that she had adopted and used the simple signs with them as infants.

I just think he is shy and hasn't come out yet. The 3 year old right. He talks and says a lot of things but wont say what he wants if he thinks he isn't gonna get it or if he thinks he will be in trouble it is more like avoiding talking when it doesn't help him? He wont tell us what is wrong when he is upset or that he is angry he just cries. I think maybe he just don't know how to express his self.

I don't have any children but I think it's all hype, myself. I think it would be impossible for an 8 month old to learn how to read. They have to learn how to talk first, the way I see it, and grasp the meaning of words. They wouldn't have to read out loud but I still think they should wait until they're in kindergarten before they can be taught how to read. So many kids are learning so many things because of programs like Sesame Street, though. Kathy.

I don't blame you for not wanting them to watch much tv. There's so much that's not fit to watch any more. I'm sure that programs like Nick Jr. and Sesame Street are all right, though. I never was a big tv watcher but I like the old reruns of Little House On The Prairie that come on everyday on the Hallmark channel. I also like to watch rfdtv a lot, which is rural america's most important network. There's nothing dirty on that station. Kathy.

Yea Nick Jr is clean as can be its like a preschool for kids. It use to be noggin. It is on 24/7 so if they wake up sick at 3 am I can turn it on and know they are watching something decent. They have like Dora to learn Spanish and Kia Lan to learn Chinese I believe. Also they count and look for letters there is music in the kid commercials there isn't real commercials its only shows and there kid commercials.

I agree and the programs on Nick Jr my kids watch them some but I would prefer they dont watch a lot of TV. Although now at kindergarten they use videos to teach kids phonics and things. Like the leapfrog stuff. I know my daughter likes them.

Well first off I think education is great and very necessary, BUT I think its a bit too soon for a little baby's to be worrying about learning to read so soon. I mean they have plenty of time to learn all that stuff when there in school I think that baby's should be allowed to be baby's until the time is right for them to learn, lets not make our kids/baby's grow up to fast, kids need to learned to read at the appropriate age thats just my opinion. No disrespect to those parents who use that program but if I had a baby I dont think I'd be worried about my kid reading at that age, there only baby's for a short time so why not just let them be baby's. Now as for weather or not this infomercial is fake or not, who knows it looks pretty real, but at the same time a lot of commercials on TV especially the ones that make big clame's tend to be fake or exaggerated. I'm (not) saying this one is fake, but we should always keep in mind that the people who make these commercials and products are making a lot of money, and when we spend our money we dont have a solide garuntee that these products really work. you know they old saying buyer beware just sayin.

well i think a lot of those as seen on TV products are you pretty much get what you pay for it seems a lot of people will buy those products, because for the most part they are inexpensive. i think i was given one of those 29.99 electric razors for Christmas a few years ago and it works just fine when the hair on my face is short, but it doesn't trim well at all, but for what was paid for it, it does a fair job on my face. i think it was one of those bell and howell razors if memory serves and i wanted a new razor, but didn't want me or anyone spending an arm and leg on one. it is pretty hard to be up late at night and not see one of those commercials i think i have even seen them remake some of billy mays old commercials with that guy he did that show with.

I think so too I know people has bought the stuff and how you not want to when they will double it and send you extras that always gets me. I have forever wanted a bullet because of the infomercials.

Hi Christinawise It is not true that all the TV commercials are not real because it depends on the brand that the product belongs to. If the product is of good brand then you can think about it to some extent and if the brands are new and never seen or heard about them then it is better you need not purchase them. If the product is so reliable then you see many people using them and obviously you purchase them. Have a nice day.

I know I was asking which brands do people use from As seen on Tv so that I know there is real ones and fake ones. I myself have used oxy clean and shamwows and would suggest them to others. I would not suggest Ped egg, bowflex or the DVD selling guy who gives you one program because the last two are a scam for a high amount of money and the ped egg is horrible it made me feet worse and tore them to heck.

I have seen that add as well as full 30 minute infomercials about it. To be quite honest while the concept is solid, I still think its a bunch of.... well bull. While studies have proven children pick up and read at a young age, the concept of them actually being able to do the thought processes and understand the concept of their actions at that age just seem a bit far-fetched. Learning takes time. While I think it is possible for a mother to teach their child to find body parts, the dvd implied they were reading more and more complex words that I myself would have to freeze my t.v. not only to read (if I could even see it well enough) but know what they are doing are saying? No. Every parent wants their children to grow up smart. But, I think this "you baby can read" is just trying to drive parents to do what they should be doing all along-- interact with their children-- under the faulse pretences that when they reach kidnagarden age they can pick up a book and read it just like you and me. While the concept sounds good, I feel its a bit stupid and should be banned or removed. Or, if nothing else given a warning.

You know I haven't seen this commercial in years. I can't believe it either. Most kids don't have the muscles in their mouth and tongue developed enough to even try saying complicated sounds at 8mo. And you know the program has "disappeared" so who knows how legit it was.
