Hello, and welcome to MyLot. My favourite historical figure is Richard III of England. He has a bad press because of Shakespeare's play, but he was actually well loved in the north of England and did a lot for the country. He was a very complex man, and was also the last King of England to be killed in battle.

I love learning about history. I'm really interested in the Tudors. I find Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth, fascinating. I've read quite a lot about them. I'm sure there are many more. I'm drawn to powerful female figures in history.

Me too. I find the women of English history fascinating. Their politics are so different from us now. I mean some of them are willing to murder their own family members just to remain in power.

History has been so hard on women because of the rules of society and because men wrote the history books, that often the ones that stand out are the ones that were cruel or suspicious. They had to be more resourceful to survive and also we have to try and look at things from the context of their times. What seems cruel to us was normal to them. For instance Elizabeth I enjoyed the "sport" of bear baiting and that seems barbaric to most people now. It's so fascinating isn't it?!

Yes very fascinating. And you're right. The value system back then is different from ours now. Back then they approve of torture in order to solve crimes and getting confessions. Now if you torture others it will be a crime with very heavy penalties.

the thing about history is that often the "bad guys" make for the most interesting study. People who we would be horrified by if they were around now are what makes history so colourful. Interesting: Caesar, Lucius Sylla, Thomas Fairfax, Vlad Tepes, Cnut, Erik Bloodaxe... Of course, there were also some very good people who are interesting like Mary Seacole, Gerrard Winstanley, Emma Goldman, George Orwell (people know he was an author but he also fought against the Fascists in the Spanish Civil War).

There are a lot of Historical figures throughout History, but there are three which seems to contribute a lot to history. 1.) Bill Gates- founder of Microsoft, he was dubbed as the richest man in the world for how many years. Without his brilliant inventions, we won't be having super fast computers today. 2.) Thomas Edison- Similar to Gates, his inventions changed the face of the planet. When he invented the light bulb, the world seem to be brighter and brighter through the years. 3.) Adolf Hitler- Without him, there would be no 2nd World War. He caused a major amount of damage that ended the lives of millions of Jews during the early 1940's.

i have no specific person that i admire (other than Jesus) but i do admire inventors who, against everyone else's better judgement were able to create something. i also love the stories of average, every day people that were thrust into unusual situations such as anyone who has fought for my nation (Canada) during a war or people that were on the Titanic. these are the stories that i find most interesting!

I have quite a few that I like a lot - Alexander is one of them, but I think my FAVORITE is Hatshepsut, the most famous female Pharaoh before Cleopatra. http://www.thekeep.org/~kunoichi/kunoichi/themestream/hatshepsut.html
