If you could change one thing about your house...inside the house... what one major home improvement would you make??
I am looking at my small house that we have been living in for the past 5 years and we have made so many changes, we have taken out a wall, pulled down panelling and insulated and drywalled the house, updated it from the original stuff that was done to it when it was built in 1950....we have torn out floors to put temporary new floors, we have done alot but yet there is still so much to be done....however we do the work ourselves and on a budget so it is a slow process.
The housing market in our area will not be back to what it was before we bought this house for a couple more years as it is....so we have the time to put into it.
We always try to start a new project every Memorial weekend, this year we are hoping to do the same as long as we have the money to do so.
Looking around your house, what one major project would you like to do to your house?

I rent, but I would love to be able to paint my walls with color. All our paint here has to be white, but I would love to have colors to match my furniture, like a nice lavender in the living room, maybe yellow in the kitchen, and light blue in my room. I'd also like to put down some carpet in the basement and make it into an extra family room.

We are saving up now, and in a couple of years, we hope to have enough money to buy a piece of land to build a house on. It's a good thing that we are living in an apartment now and CAN'T do anything, because we are planning to build our own house! That will be a HUGE task for us! But at least we know it will be exactly what we want. It's not going to be anything big and fancy, but it will be ours, andthe walls will be whatever color I want lol!

looking around my rented room, i want to change a lot. i was thinking that if i could only own this place then i will change a lot from it. like the paint, the wall and the kitchen. but then since im just renting and im also thinking of moving out this april then so be it. maybe if already have a home of my own then i will make it beautiful but while renting then no thanks, as long as i have a complete appliances and the place is already nice and comfortable to live with.

Yes, renting a place and not being able to do anything to that space can dampen the whole remodeling/changing a room thing....
One nice thing I did like while renting though, was it wasnt mine and it was complete....now that we are doing so many things to our house we never have a finished room...so I miss having a completed room!!
good luck on moving out if that is what is your plan...thanks for the response and have a great day!

I would like to get rid of the plaster walls and drywall the walls and eliminate some of them to make it a more open floor plan. That way my son could get around better in his wheelchair and I would get rid of the paneling that is covering up the crumbling plaster.

that does sound nice... I hope you can get to do that or at least start with part of it soon.
we try to do a project every summer this way we have some down time because when you live in a fixer upper and have "construction zones" as I call them...you get tired of living with the unfinished projects real soon...
so start with something small... maybe just take out one wall...when you have a major change that is needed it is a high expense and we found out over the years...start small because it always cost us at least $100 more than we originally thought.
good luck with it and happy mylotting.

Last year I had a new lounge sliding door put in. It is double glazed. It looks superb. It keeps me warm because it does let in drafts like my old door that I used to have. I would love to be able to afford to replace all the windows in my house. That would be three windows: the kitchen, the double bedroom and the single bedroom. I have lots more I would like to do with my house like painting the walls and getting new carpet on the stairs. For my garden I would like to buy a summer house.

Oh I bet the sliding door is very nice...I would like one of those but no where in the house that I could really put it...at least not yet!! but we are always working on the house so we never know what the next project will be for our house.
I think that everyone would be able to find one thing for sure they would like to do to their house, or many many things!!!
thanks for the response and have a great day!!

"Having the money to do so", that's the catch, isn't it? If I could, I would love to renovate our master bedroom. It's a very large room that has a silly layout. We have room for a spacious ensuite bathroom and a walk in closet. Next up would be the kitchen which has it's original 1970's cabinets.

I know, money is so tight right now that even a budget would be nice to have...
that sounds really nice if you could do it...it might not be right now that you can but hopefully in the near future it will be an option and then you can enjoy your bedroom again.
Our kitchen floor needs to be redone and I am hoping that will get done in the next year...at least I hope!!
thanks for the response and have a great day!!

If you want my honest answer I would have to say knocking down the entire thing and starting all over again. We live in a really old house and have already made some dramatic improvements to the house both inside and out. But after living here for five years I Know that the space and layout just don't work for our family. I suppose that is about as dramatic a it gets.

I have a huge laundry list of stuff I'd like to get done. We have a fixer upper & not a whole lot of funds. The cheapest thing to do for us would be to paint the rooms again. I'd love to get the floors redone, kitchen professionally done (we did it ourselves and though it looked great compared to what we bought it looking like), the bathroom redone like a new tub. But really sometimes I look around and just think it would be cheaper if we could afford to to demolish this house and put up a new one

hello bookreader,
If i had the money..i would like to make an extension with my kitchen.
My house is also a small one, just like those ordinary bungalow houses with adjoining dining area and kitchen.
I want to have my kitchen separated with the dining area.
Becoz,i want to have a bigger space when cooking and preparing foods.
So far, that's the only change i want to do with my house...everything is fine with me,except my kitchen and dining area.
