How Do You Plan Your Travel to Other Countries?

I have never left my country. I have stayed here all my life. It is not that I never wanted to go anywhere it is just that I dont have any family or friends in other countries that I can stay by or help me get around. Also I think it is very expensive to travel. Some persons travel sometimes once or even twice a year to all sorts of countries. I will like to be like that one day but I need a start. So please tell me how do you do it? How do you plan your travel to other countries? Also how do you minimise your cost?

Where I travel to depends on the money I have available. When I was a teenager I didn't have much money but I managed to get some funds for the traveling I wished to do. I did a paper round to get the money to go to Greece. I worked as a children's nanny in Finland to get enough money to travel around Europe by train. I let out my home and got a working holiday visa for Australia to go around the world. These days I one at least one overseas trips a year. Some years I am lucky enough to have two or three trips overseas each year. Last year I did a long haul trip and the flight was pricey. I flew from London to Cape Town. This year I will be flying to Halifax in Canada with my toddler son and baby daughter. It is a shame that I can only afford to go on one overseas trip this year. I try to book reasonably priced flights and I read a travel guide book which tells me the cheap accommodation that I can stay in. I do self catering. When I am in a country overseas I travel on the local trains and buses. I used to be a backpacker and stayed at youth hostels. When I was at my poorest I stayed in my tent. Some countries are expensive and a number of countries are cheap to visit. For example Eastern Europe has its bargains like a budget trip could be Romania and Bulgaria. Australia and New Zealand have some lovely youth hostels. Guatemala is very cheap to travel around. Reading travel guide books can show you the cost of traveling in different countries. I suggest you borrow some travel guides from your local library.

Twice a year? That's nothing :-) Must go somewhere at least 3 to 4 times a year! Of course, on of the trips is usually just across the border to Sweden, it's a two hour drive and I drive back the same day, so that doesn't take much money or planning. If I'm going somewhere to stay with friends, I first check when there's cheap tickets, then check if they're home and then book. I maybe book some consert tickets if I'm going to London or Vienna and check the weather forecast before I start packing, but I don't plan much more than that. If I'm going somewhere I haven't been before, I'll of course book a place to live too, and usually check up tourist attractions etc so I have an idea of what I want to do. Of course, normally I'd check that there's something there I want to do before I book the flights :-)

When you plan to travel you consider first the budget that you have. Consider first how much is it that you wanted to spend for your travel. Once you have identified that, you can already make some options and make a list of the places you want to go considering your budget.
