I keep hearing people on this forum rant about how "liberals" are "socialists" but I am not sure that the people saying this really understand what socialism is.
I was a political science major in college, and I would like to pose a few questions for the mylot forum. These questions are for anyone who has used the term 'socialism' in a post in the past two months.
1. A member of myot recently called a certain politician a "communist" and a "muslim." Why is this impossible? Can you name three areas in which these two worldviews are in direct opposition to each other?
2. Give three major differences between communism and socialism.
3. Give an example of a socialist country.
4. Give an example of a communist country.
5. Is it possible for a country to be both a democracy and have a socialist system of government?
6. Give three major differences between communism and capitalism.
I will post answers in one week. I am looking forward to hearing how the conservatives on mylot do.

Although i don't identify myself as a conservative (I am actually pretty liberal on a lot of issues) or a neo-liberal (liberal used to have an entirely different meaning) I will answer.
1. One cannot be a muslum and a comunism, especialy when you are a nation or national leader, shiria and comunism conflict and that is all one need say to point out the difference. 2.
3. Sweden, France, Venezuela, etc
4. China, North Korea, Vietnam
5. Yes, see france and sweden for example.
I'm not going to go any further, I believe I made my point. I do believe that Obama is a socialist leaning progressive authoritarian though. That there is no escaping. He claims to be a constitutional lawyer/scholar (depending on when you hear him) but his actions demonstrate that either he ISN'T and doesn't know what he is talking about in that area or compeltely disagrees with the constitution and ignores what he was taught because it doesn't suit his agenda.
Now, I answered your questions....would you be so good as to answer the one I asked you repeatedly a few months ago on what in the house or senate healthcare bil you liked using relevent text from the bills as an example and how it acomplishes what you want it to acomplish?

T thought this was an interesting posting. Although, I probably wouldn't do well on these questions, I'll check back to see the answers.
I guess I'm one of those liberals. It least on here although I probably consider myself a moderate.
What I'd really like to know is "Why is socialism considered such a bad thing?" Some of it seems to work quite well in the Scandinavian countries and would probably work well here. Capitalism certainly isn't 100% although it has it's good points. I frankly don't see the point of having state of the art medicine if all of our people can't be helped by it and a little socialism in the health care system could be quite an improvement.

1. You can easily be any religion and still support communism. Anyone can twist their faith to support any agenda.
2. The biggest difference between communism and socialism is that in communism, civilians have no control over business, it's all run by the government. In socialism, the government owns businesses, but allows private, non-government people to run and operate most business.
In communism the government owns and controls ALL property. Private ownership of land is questionable at best. In socialism people can actually own their property
Socialism allows people to make varying amounts of money and uses progressive taxation and wealth redistribution to balance the money in a way that makes citizens more equal. In communism, income is strictly controlled in an attempt to make everyone equal consistently which is why the term "comrade" became so popular in the former Soviet Union when they tried to claim everyone was an equal under communism. Of course that wasn't true, but that was the goal.
3. Sweden
4. Communism as we know it is an ultimate and abysmal failure. China is the closest thing to a Communist country, but they still fall closer to socialism.
5. Yes
6. In communism businesses and production are owned and controlled by the government. In capitalism the vast majority are owned and controlled by private citizens. In communism wages are designed to be equal amongst people. In capitalism people earn wages based on their value to their employer (ideally). In communism
You should probably avoid behaving as though you are an authority on the matter though. As a polysci major I'm sure you are aware that there are many forms of communism, socialism, and capitalism and each country integrates the systems differently. I tried to use the most generalized definitions to answer your questions, but others may use definitions based on different communist countries.
The basic premise of capitalism is private ownership and control of business and production with minimal government interference. Communism is the opposite with the government controlling business and production 100%. Socialism is largely a hybrid of the two.

So commenting on China as a socialist state is not a good idea? And saying that Sarkozy would probably be upset too (at another post, but still, he might be upset, and the French can be so annoying when they're upset) is going to get me banned? What if I spell it Sharkcosy?
Or no, I know what I can do! I pretend that I haven't realized that the union between Sweden and Norway ended in 1905! Then I can know things about Sweden too. How exciting. You do the same, and you can know things about the whole world. We'd both be out of date but who'd notice? ;-)

LMAo! This is the greatest phrasing of a discussion I've ever seen. But I think you should have went with:
"Since I'm smarter than y'all, I know that you loons have just been smearing folks blindly without knowing what you're talking about.
I know this because I'm smarter than you.
So, here are some questions that you can try to answer. But it doesn't matter what you answer, because I'll be back in a week to tell you the 100% accurate truth, dummies.
Pretend you know something, will ya!?"
This rocks!

No, no. No. You've got it wrong.
I'm serious. This is the best phrasing of a discussion I've seen on myLot. I think it's absolutely hilarious, and I'm not mocking it.
