I'm curious to find out what kind of exercises that other mylotters utilize in able to help them lose some of their extra pounds.
I've personally been overweight for the majority of my life and it is something that I'm not happy about and thus something that I am in the process of changing. I've recently joined an aerobics class that meets twice a week and I'm also trying to get back into using my Wii for exercise purposes as well as my Biggest Loser DVDs.
Would everyone share with me what they do to get in their exercise in their lives. I'd like to be able to incorporate more into my life.

I have a mixture of things that I do to help put diet and exercise on an equal scale. As far as exercise, there is an east Indian yoga program on Youtube for those with back problems. I have found it to be EXTREMELY useful. It has the added benefit that some of the exercises can be done by those who are moderately sedentary or even in an office cubicle, while sitting at a desk. Most of those particular exercises are things that as an American, I can remember learning back in kindergarten and first grade... Trunk twists, "elephant arms", toe touches, snake arms. Those were a TREMENDOUS help, at least for me.
Through time, I've also incorporated some stability ball stuff, and learned that basic kickboxing moves in repetition are wonderous too. I add in basic belly dance movements as well. I switch up what I do from day to day. It's good to hear that you're exploring options so that you can find what is best for you :)
Good luck :)

Not only do I want to find out what is best for me, I also want to learn to exercise as many muscles in my body as I possibly can. My stomach and my thighs are what I consider to be my problem areas. However, I have a lot of loose skin in my arms from where I've already lost a large amount of weight from when I was at my largest.

I go to the gym everyday. Most days I will run 5 miles... actually I'm up to 5 and half now because I've up my speed to 5.5 mph.. and I run for an hour. I read while I run, so when I'm done running I will walk at about 3.5 mph until I'm done with the chapter I'm on, usually 10-20 minutes. Some days I'll do half an hour on another machine, like the elliptical.. but that depends on how much time and energy I have that day. I usually finish up with about 15 minutes of weights, just 1 rep of 15 on each weight machine.. usually just arms because I feel like my legs get enough exercise.
On Tuesdays I take an aerobics class that incorporates some light weight lifting.. but we do a lot of reps, like a full minute per set. After that hour long class I will do a half hour pilates class.
Wednesdays I take a half hour cycling class, then do half an hour on the stairmaster, then weights.
Fridays is a full hour of cycling... every other week we break up the cycling with what they call boot camp, which is where we run up and down the stairs and do lunges and other things like that.
Sundays my usual routine ends in a half hour abs class.
Thursdays and Saturdays there is a Yoga class I want to try, but haven't done so yet.
Now that I have my X Box 360 back, I now spend my afternoons playing Dance Dance Revolution. It used to work up a serious sweat... now it doesn't effect me so much, but I'm still moving my body, so it counts!

I'm trying to find out which local gyms have decent afternoon/evening classes because I babysit my two nieces during the day so daytime classes are out for me. I do love the aerobics class that I am doing right now and would love to add something more class wise on the days that we don't have that class. I can't picture myself running personally because I have a bad ankle, but it also isn't something that I think I will never do.

Not sure if you have heard of a company called beach bodies but they have multiple types of dvd sets that will help you and they work. The ones I have used personally are p90x and insanity. I also know a few that are using hip hop abs and some females that are using Chalean. Everyone that I know of including myself have had great results with this. I have used my wii fit also. Since I am recovering from rotator cuff surgery I am not doing any at the moment. But I will be going back to one of there programs may give a new one a look.

I know some of my friends have used P90X, but I just don't know if I could do it. If I was able to find the set for a good enough price I might give it a try, but with the cost of it new, there is no way for me.

Hello, Dorannmwin. I've had a long battle with the bulge as well. I do a lot of swimming. I go with my next door neighbour at least twice a week. It's good exercise, as it tones the whole body. I have arthritis, so I have to avoid high impact aerobics, so swimming is great.
I also go to belly dancing classes, which is great fun as well as good exercise. We do a lot of stretching exercises, so I'm becoming much more supple, and the dancing is firming up my thighs nicely. I'd say do something you really enjoy, as you're more likely to stick with it.

I absolutely love swimming. In fact, I am trying to convince my husband that we need a membership at the Y so that I can swim on a regular basis. I was a swimmer in high school and it is something that I will always love. I just wish that there was a year-round pool here that didn't need a membership.

Hello doran,
I am also a little bit chubby and was trying to lose some weight, becoz i felt heavy with my weight now.
I do some jogging in the morning,or sometimes in the afternoon.
But most of it...i had some diet.
I cut my eating habit, and shifted to healthy ones.
Getting older makes our metabolism to get slower,so,we need to have a healthy diet to digest the food that we are eating.
Slow metabolism makes a person fat becoz of the stored unused foods in our body.
One good way of taking out some excess fats and cholesterol is by exercise.
Sweating off,we can lose some pounds...but,we also need to follow with a strict diet.

Oh, I completely realize and acknowledge that diet is a big culprit in being overweight and also in making it difficult for an individual to lose weight. I changed our family's diet last year to being mostly low fat and that in and of itself has made a big difference, but I also know that I need to incorporate more exercise into my life. It is something that is difficult to do as well because I normally have three preschoolers with me during the day.

I've talked about figure skating a zillion times on myLot, but I haven't truly been able to skate for over 5 years now. That was my exercise, and I loved it because it didn't feel like exercise. I also loved my yoga and dance classes too - again, it kept me fit but it didn't feel like "exercise".
So these days, I hardly have time for anything (my kids are my exercise - hee hee). But when I do, I try to gear my "exercise" towards the one day I get back into skating. First I jog in place for about a minute to get my body warmed up. Then I stretch (there's a whole routine I do from head to toe - with my version of yoga incorporated into it). I used to do off-ice exercises (floor jumping, etc), but as I don't have time for that, I will dance around to my favorite music - either on CD or via my favorited You Tube music videos - ha ha. That can be a workout too - as long as you get that heart beat going! And if there's time, there'd be cool down stretching.
For now, I concentrate on upper body stretching (with nursing and carrying the baby - my neck, arms, shoulders and back need it!!). Also, I do a lot of "twisting" exercises to tone up the tummy and sides (post-baby flab) - it does help!

We've been doing a lot of the twisting exercises in my class and I can't begin to believe how sore those will make me. One of the things that I really like about the class that I am taking is that there is a lot of things that we do there that I'm able to take home with me.

It honestly isn't that I would mind paying for a gym membership, because to be completely honest, I would love to have a membership to one of the local gyms. The thing that I have a problem with in this arena is that I don't know when I would ever be able to find the time to visit the gym with my baby sitting and my hubby's work schedule.

For most of my life I was very overweight and I would get badly bullied at school about it, I used to diet, binge and continue to starve myself and the diets no matter how many I tried never seemed to work, it wasn't until I was in my early twenties that I decided to go to the gym, well that worked for me, I love my food and I was able to eat what I liked, but sensibly and even have my treats and still lose weight. I went down from over 16 stone to 12.7. Since then I have been kind of addicted to the gym, it has changed my life and I find I enjoy exercise, I find variety is the best if you exercise as you can easily get bored if you cycle all the time, besides if you stick to the same exercise/piece of equipment your body gets used to it and quickly adapts to you need to keep changing the routine, that is why the gym is so good, I use the cross trainer which is my favourite piece of equipment in the gym, I also jog, run, hill walk and cycle, I change my exercise plans regularly and I am happy with my weight, I also have music on whilst I exercise because that is a great stimulus and it stops you getting bored. Good luck.

I agree with you that having music going while you exercise helps a great deal. I always have to have music on when I exercise. I have also seen in my class that we never follow the exact same routine so she is keeping our bodies guessing in a sense. Thank you for sharing your story.

I definitely share your sentiments. You have to tandem it with dedication and discipline though. (which i think i don't have) hehe. That is the very reason I don't likely to succeed in my endeavors in exercising....too bad for me. :( However, before when I was so into losing weight stage I've realized that exercising is never enough. No matter how much you exercise if your eating habit is still the same, in fact it may tend to increase even more coz you're tired. But, if you'll go in a diet and exercise even not that much you'll gonna see the difference. In my case now since I'm lazy to exercise I just do diet. But if you'll gonna tandem the 2 i'm sure you'll see the difference. Just put in mind it will need hardwork, determination and discipline. Goodluck.

For me, a lot of the diet things I've carried forward from my past. I love to eat the things that we are supposed to eat, and yes, some of the things that I probably shouldn't be eating, but I don't think that there is anyone that is immune to that. At least I'm still able to eat things in moderation if they are things that I know aren't really good for me.
I hate the fact that we didn't have class last Thursday and then it looks like I won't be able to make it this evening because my husband is in the hospital which means that I won't have anyone to watch my children.

I know what has worked in the past however....... one of my biggest problems is MONEY & CHILDCARE! My hubby's work has a basic gym maybe 1500sq feet & FREE, but there's no child care. So what do I do w/ my kids? I spent 20 hrs a week approx before I was married at the gym + my 40 hrs @ my job. Now places w/ childcare are obviously not free & I can't afford somewhere that isn't next to free.
I did something like a Atkins diet w/ all that exercise & I lost 36lbs in abt 4 mo's. I'd love to do that again. but I can't deny my kids carbs KWIM? If I don't buy it we would be fine but they need it & if it's in the house there goes the diet KWIM?
I know some gals doing the 30 day shred but they just started & I hate videos. Hoping for a Wii board someday.

I'm still overweight, too, but I try to work on it when I can. You'd think I'd lose a lot of weight because I work two jobs, on my feet for around 12-15 hours a day, but for some reason, even when I eat healthy, I don't.
But when I do get a chance to work out, I really like doing exercises like yoga and bellydancing. It's lots of fun. I also really like Wii exercises, too, because it's lots of fun.
In the summer, I very much like taking walks because it's fun. I live in the country, so the view is gorgeous, especially in the fall when the leaves start changing.

We live in the city so we don't have a lot of beautiful surroundings in which to walk. However, we do have the arboretum which has a two mile walking track that I love to make use of when the weather is appropriate (which, unfortunately it hasn't been lately).

Hi Dorann,
Aside from my regualr gym exercise and workout, i still do some stretching exercis at home. if there's a chance for me to walk then i walk instead of short distances ride. i am also conscious with my diet and even while sitting down, i exercise my tummy.

Yes, anything that you are able to do on your own time does make a difference. When Tom was in the hospital this week I knew that I would be missing my class, so I took the stairs from the first floor to the third floor on almost every trip that I made.

I like to go jogging for fifteen to twenty minutes then walk for about ten minutes to cool down a bit. Then I do thirty minutes of yoga. Yoga is great because you start out at whatever level is comfortable for you and slowly watch your poses and flexibility improve. It really feels fantastic to stretch your muscles in yoga after any physical activity. Try it after your aerobic classes!

I started running in 2009. It has made a lot of difference to my fitness.
We run about 3 times a week.
Yesterday we ran for 40 minutes .
Then 3 times a week I will jump rope (on the alternate days).
I use my rope indoors on foam matting to make it less noisy for next door but I only do it in the daytime anyway.
Sometimes I use a fitness program on my PC.
It is almost the same as the my personal fitness trainer program that I think you can get on the wii. It is quite fun but needs a bit of space for the running up and down bit so I don't use it very often although I did use it about 3 times a week before I got my jump rope,I just had to move things around a lot which was awkward.
I cut chocolate consumption down to one bar on Saturday and we don't exercise Saturday so we have a lazy day.

Much like you, I've found in my endeavor to lose weight that it is important to cut consumption instead of restricting consumption. That has served me well so far and I don't see a point in changing something that is working for me.

When using a Wii Fit board it encourages you to weigh yourself every day. I don't think that it should do that because it is something that is easy to become addicted to. Then, you find that you beat yourself up all day if there is a slight change in your weight in the opposite direction of where you wish to go, even though the next day would most likely make up for it.

Yes I agree ,you still need to have treats else it becomes too tedious.
I think so long as you can exercise regularly, you don't have to always be weighing yourself either. That can become a habit .
My sister has a weight problem and talks a lot about losing 3 lbs then gaining more then losing it and I think her husband gets tired of the obsessive aspect.
He even hid the scales for a while. She finds the not having treats thing very hard and I think it is because she thinks of it as being complete deprivation or not worth trying.

Exercise out doors as far as possible. There are two advantages of doing whatever you are doing out side. One advantage is that it gives your body a chance to get a lot of the much needed fresh air and sunshine. The second advantage is that the surroundings keep you perked up and it is a break form remaining cooped up all day lon

dorannmwin,
In my course of work, I travel quite extensively and as such due to my hectic schedule I rarely have the time to work out.
So, I will usually try to check into hotels that have their own gym or swimming pool and you will usually find me indulging them in the evenings before bedtime where I will just workout a sweat and into bed after showers.
As for my diet, my meals usually are quite blend and high in vegetables and fruits. And every other day, I will be doing detox with a mix of honey and apple cider vinegar.

Turbo Jam is what I have been doing. I have most of all the Turbo Jam DVD's and they are fantastic. I started doing them a little after Thanksgiving and have lost a little over 15 pounds so far. I have also of course dieted as well. I highly suggest them because they are fun and you do get results. I think I have lost more inches than weight, but that is not such a bad thing.

hello..if you want to really lose some weight, sometimes methods are not enough..i believe you need to have commitment first..and commitment means "jumping in air from a high-flying plane". commitment means "there's no way of going back". any known methods are all effective if you have commitment..if you don't commit, you will lose a little weight, then gain them back again..if you commit, you lose a little, then you lose more, then more, then more...until you're satisfied..i hope you agree with me..(",)

I do agree with you that you have to be committed to anything that you wish to accomplish in your life. I'm committed to losing weight so that I can be a better example for my children. One of the things that I have found works well for me in terms of diet is to not restrict certain things from my diet but to instead consume things in moderation.
