If you permit me I would say something. In India the Brahmans are very intelligent. What is the cause? The vegetarian Diet, the prayer and the meditation yoga practice. Nourishing the children with healthy food but not overlapping them with vices. As a teacher and HM I had experimented with the children. Introducing the to meditate, closing the eyes lifting the attention to the inner world, locating God and positive Phrases of success resulted into minimum 15% of increasing marks and no one failed. When the teacher is attentive concentrated so is the student in grasping the content.

My permission is yours always srjc0902. And I am glad to know about that. I am not a vegetarian but I appreciate the 'good diet' they have. And I know they are very healthy people. Yes, vices too can affect intelligence. I am interested to yoga practice. I've heard about that many times yet I do not know much about it. I am a Christian but I am willing to learn about other religions' practice. I'd respect them all. I know you are a good teacher by profession and heart... so glad I hear from you. Welcome to the family and happy mylotting.

Have a blessed day srjac0902, you know what I am so glad to talk to you about this matter... I know this is a sort of a 'serious' one and need a lot of comprehension on this... I want to practice this one... I've heard lot of personalities here in the Philippines that are enjoying this a a daily activity. I found a discussion talking about yoga, it further says that yoga has five principal meanings and one of these is yoga is a technique of controlling the body and the mind. And how could this be directly related to a child/person good and balance diet, the whole yoga practice? I have find a good example in the internet, its says that the practice of yoga must be complemented by the right kind of food in order to fully benefit from what Yoga has to offer. We need to nourish our mind and body to keep us alert and energized throughout the day. The term "proper diet" can have different meanings for different kinds of people. But no matter what kind of diet you are into, make sure that your body gets the nutrients that it needs. This discussion may goes beyond our main topic, however, I am sure this is related to it... and this has a lot to offer. In my point of view yoga and balance diet is a pair. Yoga can be more effective if paired with proper/balance diet and vise versa. During meal time if you are not in a good mode, your digestive system may not function properly and the food may not be properly distributed to all our tissues of the body because there is a kind of malfunctioning in the system... thus with yoga practice, both muscles, the mind and whole system of the body is relaxed... it can properly accumulate the nutrients and mineral of the food being taken. More power!!! References: 1. http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2257950.aspx 2. http://www.abc-of-yoga.com/diet/

Yoga has its peculiar character. But a simple person may not go to the complicated or rigorous disciplinary practices. In Christianity too the contemplation has its vital importance. If we speak about facilitating the global growth process of the child, of course the diet, discipline as well as love is required to form a qualitative personality and this would be the great contribution of parents to their children. The spiritual aspect is indispensable for a healthy growth independent of religion. Even a child can have the access to sit still, remain with closed eyes, and visualize a loving God and receive the grace. There is no question of conversion but strengthening the inner reservoir. The rhythmic breathing, the silent atmosphere under the swaying gentle wind, mind gets attuned to super conscience gradually. The abuse or exaggeration should be avoided. In simplicity when the mind gets soothed then all the diets will bring up lasting effects.

The food that you listed could be helpful but, as a rule of thumb, balance diet is essential in nurturing children. Now, every parent likes his child to be intelligent. But there are eight intelligences, nine now, I heard. A parent therefore must recognize the intelligence God has blessed the child with. If blessed with mathematical, let the child join math contests and perhaps he will be an accountant someday. If blessed with spatial intelligence, maybe he will be a pilot. If gifted with natural intelligence, he may be a top chef or a hotel manager. The best brain food for the child is a parent's tender loving care!

While we must nourish the intelligence quotient, the emotional quotient, it was assessed, was thus far more important in the tender years.

Both of my children are grownups but I have always thought the best food that you can give a child is a well balanced diet plus a lot of love. My two daughters had both things and they are now good professionals. But I do think that part of it lies in the genes. You can give full power to what a child has to begin with, but you will not be able to turn a mentally handicapped child into a bright one by feeding him. Unfortunatly, there are a lot of children in this world that are starving. Those children don´t stand any chance in this world. I don´t think they do, even if you start feeding them with those wonder foods after a while. Please check www.freerice.com. It´sd a United Nations site. There you will get the whole picture of our species. The smart ones and the ones that are not easy to save. Yet, there´s always a way to help a bit, Right? And that´s when you can show you are smart. Take care!

Hi... yes, I could not say any opposite views to what you have mentions because you are absolutely correct. Child's intelligence is closely related to genes. If the parents are known to be smart, then their offsprings must be smart. However, as you have stretched out, it is impossible to turn mentally handicapped/retarded/challenged child into a smart one. Maybe we could give them some help by giving them the right foods, good/patient training and education. But the posibility lies with their IQ, highly severe one are those who have IQ levels below 25. Second, if you parents are known to be smart, and your offspring show the opposite, maybe this is something about giving good starts like brain foods, good care (giving lot of love and encouragement). My Aunt got an Honor in school all the way to college, but we wonder why Joshua cannot follow the step of her mom... during the time I did his tutorial, I discovered that he is not incapable as what he have always shown in school. And as I look at him and how his family nurtured him, I discovered something (not that his parents lacks love and care)... something that caused him to usually got failing grades... one was my aunt tolerated him to eat anything, anything like junk foods... eat meals with always pork... without veggies, without milk because he hated milk... and they tolerate them to play after school, not opening a single page of his books. Well, anyway... thanks for the links... I'll visit that right away...

I think many parents are so concerned about restricting fat intake that they are actually harming their children. Fat is essential for brain development. I'm not saying feed them cheese burgers everyday but there are good fats and it's important that we don't forget to include these in our children's diets. Skim milk certainly is not the best choice for a child.
