Ooooh boy I used to hate that word a lot. I mean, you feel so old . Years ago when people would call me 'mam' I was like in shock..like say what? you called me what? . I would ask my mother "Mom do I look old..people are calling mam? Then she would laugh and say well of course they are going to call you like that you are not teenager anymore, you are grown woman. I used to hate it especially when they use it to call you and you are far away and you can't hear them like: "Mam! mam, mam!" It used to make me feel like a senior with no teeth and a hearing aid . Now I have come to terms with it and I have accepted it..like I know I'm old you can call me mam, it's ok :( lol
Anyway, have you felt this way? What are other words you hate people call you? This applies to men as well.

I was born and have lived in the south all of my life.I was raised to call women "mamm" as a sign of respect. It doesn't matter what their age is.You're just taking it the wrong way. That's just my opinion.Have a nice day Mamm.

When I moved from Michigan to Alabama with my two year old, she learned the Mam and Sir system starting just a couple of hours after arriving.. Not just from family members, but from other adults around that she had to deal with on a regular basis. When I moved back to Michigan and she addressed a gas station clerk by saying "Thank you Sir", he told me that she was just a freak! Talk about rude!

Well, I'm not a female, I'am a man.. so they call me "Sir". Mam and Sir is basically the same.. It does matter on the first, but when get the hang of it..it will just a normal sign of respect..I don't mind people calling me Sir, whether they are older or younger than mine..
So chill out friend,, You are not the little girl your mama use to say my "little angle". You're a grown independent woman now..Its ok.. everything changes as we grow up..

my mum calls my nanna mam, i thought it was a british thing and for older people. cause my parents are from the uk. but i can now see it a bit better, for some reason when i ask my son to do something, he will say yes sir. i have to correct him and say it's yes mam.

I used to feel the same way until I moved to Florida where most folks have good old fashioned southern manners. I was on the phone just this morning with my daughter's boyfriend's mother and she routinely said "Yes, mam" instead of just "Yes"...and I'm not much older than she is. "Mam" is a term of respect and I don't have a problem with it. Good thing, too, since everyone around here uses it a lot!

I don't feel bad at all actually , but it was a big deal when I was younger. I guess it was that 'official' entering into the "MAM WORLD" that takes a while to adjust I just opened the discussion because I know a lot women have felt this way at some point.

You should try living in Alabama. They teach you Mam and Sir before you can walk... and oh boy, the looks you get in some places if you don't....

Hi mady,
Ma'am is use to address a lady with respect, to a stranger, and to older persons. Me?, I like it when anyone call me ma'am except for my husband. I hate it when people call me by my surname (without the Ms. or Mrs.) especially by my friends.

No, i do not hate it all. to me it shows they were raised to have manners & respect for someone older than them. Children are not taught to say that much anymore but i was & so were my sons.I think children need to be taught more good manners than they are.

I'm only 26 so I really don't feel like I'm quite ready to be a mam yet either. I don't like it when people call me that, but I don't find it terribly offensive or anything like that. I also don't like being called 'miss'. I've never liked it, not even when I was much younger.
