I like most animals and have spent part of today inside our french window watching the birds and a couple of little mice running around on our terrace. But now that we've moved to the seaside there is one thing that worries me - the thought of being harassed by seagulls. I lived by the sea as a child and my sister still lives in the same town. The gulls used to bring their young to a flat roof on a house nearby and sometimes one would fly down into our garden. My dad was often dive bombed by an angry parent because he was in the garden near its fledgeling. My mother sometimes put up an umbrella for protection while hanging out the washing. More recently my siister was having a barbecue and a great bird swooped down and swiped a piece of chicken that was cooking just feet from where she and her friends were sitting. Tourist on seats by the harbour eating fish and chips from paper bags often have them torn out of their hands. Those are herring gulls, and the ones we have here are a bit smaller, but they still make me nervous. Have you ever had any experiences like this?

Because I live in a coastal British town, we are regularly infested by flocks of squawking seagulls They are really annoying, and if they aren't making a mess by dropping their unpleasant loads from great heights, they are swiping food from your hands or your table

Yes, that's our family's experience too. Which part of the coast is yours? I'm in Dorset and sis is in South Devon.

I visit the ocean quite frequently, and I don't think I can remember a visit, where a "seagull adventure" isn't part of the story. I've had seagulls dive bomb me, relieve themselves on me, steal my meals at Sea World and various beach locations, etc. I love watching them from afar, but they can be a pain anywhere close.

I'll echo that, hofferp. I imagine the best place to see them is when they are nesting in a colony on cliffs in a remote location. I've seen that many times on TV and would love to be there with the cameraman.

When we lived in the city we were bothered more by seagulls dive-bombing us more that now we live near the sea-side. They nest on the clifftops about a mile or so away from us and not on the house roofs as they did in the city. As strange as it may sound, we are not harrassed by seagulls near the sea-side as we were when we lived in the city! _Derek

You are lucky then, Derek. I guess they are attracted to an urban environment where there are lots of people and therefore lots of easy pickings for them.

Hi jakill..I live in Florida and work on a yacht as a chef. When we are out, seagulls are constantly surrounding us. Unfortunately, they, just like the pelican are very lazy fishermen and prefer to take a hand out. Don't ever feed them. They will gladly take it but then you are setting a precedent and you dont want that. Let them get their own food, there is a bountiful supply for them in the ocean. Also remember that seagulls LOVE trash..Be sure your trash is always covered and try not to keep garbage that they can smell in it...On the boat we freeze garbage before disposing of it..eliminates a lot of problems, both sharks and birds. There is a web site called seagull control devices that you could refer to. It has lots of helpful info..They will tell you about ways to stop them from having their babies on or near your property etc. Thats when they get mean, when there are little ones around..Good luck..J
