I am candidate for this type of gesture of other people. My classmates tend to call my last name which is "Wong". They find it easy to say my last name rather my first name. I tried to asked from them that it is much better if you call me my first name as there are many Wong in the campus. But they don't they really prefer to call me my last name.
Only my very close buddies call me my first name but there only few. They kinda like to nick name "Mr. Wong". I'm not against it though. I just wonder why can't most people call me my first name if they already knew it.

hi nykel88 oh my I didnt really look at your profile I guess I was thinking you were Ms. Wong okay but if I knew your first name I would call you by it. I got called by my last name when I worked in the library by this wonderful blunt friend of mine Adrian who I loved dearly, but nobody else ever called me hatley just Patsie, my first name. but Adrian was one of a kind, outspoken, bluff b ut so kind and of all p eople she had to go and get lung cancer which killed her in two months.I still miss her though I have been retired for ages and she has been gone for ages too. Here on mylot a lot of people assumed I was a guy because I guess Hatley sounded male but I am very much female.

I'm sorry for the lose of your friend. I hope my discussion didn't trigger you to be sad. God be with him. As for my profile no worries, I just put my friends picture there because I wanted to have another picture of my self in decent outfits. Sadly I wasn't able to do yet because of the busy schedules. Your name doesn't sound as a guy. I knew you were female not through the profile but your name. ^^

Some schools and colleges are like that, and I know in many countries people are called by their last name or in certain countries "family names". Example, if your last name is Martinez, and you go to a college such as Harvard or Yale, you will most likely be called by your last name or family name, which is Martinez.
At my college and at my high school, it was like this at times. Now, I cannot and will not give out my last name (if I did tell some of you guys my last name, you all might freak out about it, so that is why I won't tell anyone what it is).

Again it all depends on the school and where you live at.
I know that in Japan it is quite common to call people by their family names. In the U.S. where I am from, there are some traditional towns and cities that will do the same thing, but it is nothing personal.

Hello rouge
I'm okay with teachers or faculty calling me my last name. I know they can't seem to remember all our first names due to our mass population here. Also if they try to record our scores our last names are the first to be sorted out. The only thing that kinda bothers me that other people would start calling me in my last name. Not really a bother but I just hope they just call my first name.

I like your name, so probably if we're classmates I would call you Nykel coz it sounds so unique. Maybe it's difficult for them to pronounce your name? Or they just have been accustomed to it that it's not easy to change anymore. In school before, we often address each other by last names too. However, I couldn't remember exactly why. :)

@rajaiv Nice meeting you here in myLot. I'm glad there are already so many Filipinos here ^^,
@3honor Well yeah but some western people or from Europe already are practicing some Asian words just like when people go to hongkong which is under British rule, some Europeans talk Asian. For the names well if its long then it is hard but there are names just like mine having only 1 to 2 syllable intonation, that wouldn't be hard for them. Just that my first name is Nykel and I don't know is it hard to pronounce?

I guess you could ask them nicely to just call you by your first name. i do know some people that have the same first name and it would just be easier to call them by their last name. Good thing, I don't have anybody that calls me by my last name. Its short and it rhymes with a lot of bad words. lol.

My last name is like yours, which is "Wang". But I never heard anyone calling me by that, even my teachers are calling me on first name basis plus the "Mr."
I can't say if there is a universal way of calling names, but in most cases calling you by first name is the norm, and we feel comfortable by that.
If the ones that are calling your last name are not making fun out of your name, then I think is alright to let them, maybe is easier for them to say, or is better for them to remember as you could be the only "Wong" in your class. Since they know your face, other simliar names in campus won' t be a issue.
Perhaps they think your name is different, and they don't encounter that many Asian people in their area, so they tend to make nick names out of yours. It won't be a bad thing as long as they don't discriminate against your racial background, if they do then you should take action to protect your right.

Hi xenobane! Your Wang nice to know, that last name is rare here in our campus. Regarding mine, they don't make fun of it they are just used to it. Well to some they would repeat my last name several times and making it that they are making sounds of Light saber. I did talk to him about it and told him that wasn't that funny so he just shut his mouth.
Dude also I'm from Philippines, there are like many Chinese, Singaporean, Korean and etc here. So I can't say they haven't met Asian people plus they already are. hah Thank you xeno!

When I was still studying, teachers would call me by my last name which isn't surprising as they also did that to all the students that they called, be it for recitations or just to call their attention. Among classmates, they would call me with my nickname(s) they they eventually got to use. They would either use my nickname that I even use at home, perhaps I told them to call me as when I got acquainted with them, or that other nickname that they have given to my family name. No worries about any of those names, didn't really confused me anyway.
However, if their nicknaming (is there even a word like that?) sounds like its for ridiculing me, I would really complain and ask them to stop it before they could turn it into a habit..

It's the Wong thing to do? :-)
Bad Dawn...
Well seriously, I have always believed that people should respect what YOU want to be called. They may forget occasionally, but they don't get to decide what you want to be called. Not cool.

I think that sometimes it all depends on the last name. I mean to say that regardless of whether it's easier to prounce, or people just forget the person's first name, some last name's are just weird when called to get the attention of someone. My last name is very odd indeed to be called out, people would be wondering what the person was talking about?...

may be hard mentioning your name, so your friend called with the last or middle name. My friends never use the word as last name because confused chop the letters. Only certain people are carelessly cut my last name.

Yes i have also called to my mostly friends by their last name.. and now it in our habit because we calling each others lat name.. i think.. it's a not good way to calling others last name.. because.. suppose.. if 2 persons have same their last name.. then it is a confusing whose calling by you.. so some time it is a way of confusions.. have a nice day and keep mylotting always..

Hehe my last name rhymes with yours. A good majority of my friends call me by my last name and only like two call me Mr. I don't mind it at all, I like my nickname. I respond to both my first and last name so It doesn't really matter to me. I have no idea why people can't call us by our first names unless it's quicker or shorter than our first.
