I could see it working out well as I feel you need someone who can really bat to be a little lower in case your lower order really struggles, It has really helped when one of the top Batsmen on the team has steadied the lower order batsman especially if they are young and inexperienced.

ya he is quiet confident that he can bat at middle.
It may be because he bats at middile order in ranji cricket.

It's certainly something work looking at as they will surely lessen the impact of Sachin Tendulkar retiring if they have someone who steps up and takes his place. India are one of the best batting sides in the World anyway.

yes you are absolutely correct, if sachin retires then it will be so hard to find out his replacemnet soon.so its better to bring down a experianced batsman, if viru himself wants it then it will be a good blessing for the team.
surely viru willbe the best replacement for sachin in test cricket and that will lessen the effect of sachins retirementalthough this will happen only after 2-3 years.

Well Sehwag was a number 5 or 6 batsman for his state team, as India was struggling to find a explosive opener in ODI's and tests, Sehwag was made a make shift opener. Whatever, he had created records which not even sachin was able to achieve like the triple hundred in very quick time. It is good idea for Sehwag to come at Sachin place but if openers think they will not get rest then I will not agree. Like Sehwag, Gautham Gambhir too will be doing fielding and then has to open the innings, Gambhir will be in the short leg spot where he has to take many blows from opposite team batsmen. One more thing, Sehwag is comparing with Dhoni. Dhoni will in action in each ever over because he is a wicket keeper which is hardest job to do in cricket. Has to sit down and stand up and has to collect all the throws from the fielders and lot of hectic work. So, Dhoni needs more rest than any other player on the field. If there is no one as good as Sachin who takes the number 4 spot then it is Sehwag. But I feel Rohit Sharma is good place to fill up the number 4 but if Sehwag wants to come down then it is good choice. But if he is coming down the order because he is not getting rest then it is silly in my view..

sewag pointed his opinion only it depends upon captain to specify the batting order.
sewag pointed this because he said that, he is now on 30s(age), so he is not that much young now and he asks the position only after sachins retirement, so what is wrong in it.
and gambir is still young and he may get the no:4 position when viru retires.
I think what viru pointed out is correct, because fresh legs with good speed and reflex is neede aa openers (specially in 2nd innings). Actually we should appreciate viru for understanding his caliber and accepting to going down and for showing a great confidence to replace a batsmen of sachins caliber
and another thing is that this will happen only after sachins retirement, he will still play for 2-3 years of test cricket.sachin retires only after pontings retirement

ya he is a good opener and when he himself wants to play at no:4, then what is wrong in it, that too after sachins retirement.
and he pointed that he may play well in middile order, but it was not noticed because he was not used to play in middile order in international cricket.
and he plays in middile order in domestic cricket.

henniesaunders- sewag is a very good player of spin bowling also, so i dont think that will make any problem.

well the thing is that a player cant play for ever and that is quite evident that we have to accept the loss of sachin also in near future. so that goes for all players. now the thing is that it is completely his decision to play or retire. yes requests can be made if the team thinks that there is no replacement at that time. but the thing about batting at no4, well that is something that the captain will decide. we are no one to comment. but yes, his role as an opener is very important. he can get off the filed when there is not many wickets and take some rest and come to bat.

i think captain will give the position he wishes, if the slot is empty.
if viru wnts to bat at no:4 then dhoni will give after sachins retirement.
viru himself told that even though he is effective and scoring well as a opener, he wishes to bat at no:4 in tests.ha aded that he may bat better at no:4, and it will be only known if he bats on that position.

well i also read this in newspaper and definetely not to my likings.
for starters, why he wanna play 100 test matches and retire after his 100th test match?
he is no different from the flintoffs, bonds and whoever heck think their body will not work well after 34 years and not fit for test matches.if your body is not fit for test matches, one should quit playing test matches.
second,he wanna bat at number 4.?
thats not gonna happen my friend because sachin has made it his for quite a long time.
besides sehwag has already played 76 matches and my guess is tendulkar might retire after 2011 world cup and there could be atleast 5 to 6 test matches before world cup so that makes it 82.
so you wanna guy who is going to play only 18 test matches after tendulkar's retirement and retire himself to replace tendulkar?
how pathetic this could get?
and it also leaves the opening spot empty and whoever replaces it,you guys wont be happy cuz he is not sehwag but another slow poke.

stardust makes a good point if we go by mathematics. but sehwag has probably said 100 as a figure he wants to achieve. i do not think he will retire after 100 tests. but even if he wants to then it will be a great accomplishment and he will be around 34-35 years. so i think sehwag has said this keeping all these things in mind.

well, he wants to play in the position where sachin played, what is wrong in it that too after sachins retirement.
but me too dont think that his retirement after 100 matches thats no at all good for indian cricket.
and if sachin retires then we will not get another sachin to replace him from the very next match, so i think sewag can take the risk to balance that slot and bmay try another opener.

i do not understand why sehwag is making a fuss about it since he has done so well at the opening slot. he usually fields in the slips so how does he get tired? sachin tendulkar is the best batsmen at the number four position and i doubt sehwag will do as well in the middle order as he does it upfront. we know sehwag likes to score at a good strike rate. since he comes at the opening he is able to hit boundaries since the ball is hard. even in the last match we saw him slow down a little against the spinner in order to play a long inings. the ball becomes comparitively softer in the middle overs and sehwag likes to play his strokes from the first ball which is not very conducive in the middle overs against the spinners. i think he should stick to the opening slot and let youngsters like rohit sharma take over in the middle order when the legends retire.

no player, old or new can be a good replacement for sachin tendulkar. great players like dravid and sachin cannot be replaced. domestic cricket is different than international cricket otherwise everyone would have made it to the test squad. sehwag likes to play his shots and it is possible against the fast bowlers since the ball is hard and the field settings are attacking. it is important for any team to get a good start in any form of the game. if tendulkar cannot be replaced neither can be sehwag. if a young player is made to open and he fails then the pressure on sehwag and the middle order will be even more. sehwag likes to play his shots from the very beginning and he is more susceptible against spin bowlers. not because he is not good against spin bowlers, all indian players play spinners well. why to go after something might achieve by placing sehwag in the middle and mess up what we already have. and what we already have is team india at the no.1 spot and sehwag at the no.1 spot in the icc rankings.

no, i dont think any new comer would become a good replacement for sachins slot, i also think that this willbe a good move tofill the slot of tendulkar.
and he plays spin well, in domestic cricket he plays in middile order.
if we try a new opener and he gets out quickly, then we can look out for the sewag who come down in the order.
but if viru goes out early and the new replacement for sachin dont works then it would be pathetic condition for the team.

That is what the test matches are all about - ENDURANCE! A player has to have some amount of endurance in him ! Also, this shows the fitness level of the team.... But, I accept that it will be quite tough to do that as well! Also, I do not want Sehwag to retire after only 100 matches!

Sehwag may have seem to worry a little about getting injury prone now-a-days as most of the Indian players are getting injured in the tight cricketing schedules these days which is being followed by almost all the countries. But is we see Tendulkar's stand when he was made to bat at number four position in test matches, he was literally against that decision made by the Indian selectors and was opposing it for sometime. But later, he gave in for the benefit of the team balance as the selectors wanted a player of his caliber to come in at no. 4 and play long innings and carry the team along with him. He took the decision sportingly later on and it worked very well for team India as he has also scored many runs now batting at that slot. But if we see his opening record, he was the best batsman at the opening slot and has always liked opening for the Indian Team, be it a test match situation or a one day International match. And since Sehwag has got that trust of the selectors in him that he can bat at no. 1 for Team India alongside Gambhir and bat for India, he should be thankful enough and make the most out of this opportunity until it is present. Later on then, if we miss it, we will have to look back at times, and repent our decisions as to why we had said so!!

i dont think that sehwag should bat at the number position since the opening position is very suited and tailor made for him . he can use the new ball to good effect . since the ball will be hard he may get some chances when he slashes them hard and thus he may escape at times . i dont think he should bat at number 4 . we have seen him struggling at lower orders when he played at times . more over its not all the time he has to bat immediately after fielding for more than a day . we wish him that he continues his good job at the opening position and plays more than 100 tests as he wishes .
