How would you define dinner, and are you taking that together as one family?

The word dinner is originally from the Old French 'disner' that means 'breakfast'. Eventually this term shifted to referring to the heavy main meal of the day. In some usages, the term dinner has continued to refer to the largest meal of the day, even when this meal is eaten at the end of the day and is preceded by two other meals. Today, there are many definitions of dinner according to different individuals depending on how they value 'dinner' to them whether this is taken in the beginning, middle or end of the day. In my point of view, I would define dinner as a special meal where I and my whole family eat together. And this is usually done at the end of the day, after work and after school. I put it in the end of the day because this is the time that the whole family is free together. We can talk together about what happens the whole day of work, of school, etc. The topic is happy and alive. In this time also we could have our bonding together. And how I wish this could be happening everyday to me, I am far from them so we could not take dinner as a whole family just in some special occasions like birthday, or holidays seasons. This days, I and my sister take our dinner together, but we are still happy for the blessings, for the food and the good health we receive from God each day. And we are talking about the rest of our family too, about their viands, etc. Now it is your turn, how would you define dinner? How often you take dinner together as one happy family? I define dinner as the last meal you have that day. But for me, It may not be the largest. I don't eat breakfast. I usually have my biggest meal of the day in the middle. But the middle of my " day" is 5pm or so. I eat it alone. But usully I am watching either a good movie or a great sporting event.

When I'm off work , that is the time I get hungry. Two Days a wek I get off at 5pm , By the time I get home I eat , so 6:30pm is the time I get to eat. I live with my sister but her schedule is different plus she eatswith her boyfriend. the only times we all eat together are Thanksgiving , Christmas, or birthdays.

I always have dinner with my family. We always eat together. There is the saying that families who eat together stays together. Maybe it is because it is during dinnertime that each member of the family talks about his/her day. We share funny stories, trivia, and opinions during dinnertime. For my family, dinnertime is the time we share updates on each of our lives.

Dinner refers to any meal. And it could be a bonding time for the family. My children and I get to talk at supper time because we are more relaxed after a whole day of constant hustle. Breakfast is hurried, definitely. And lunch? I eat alone. But what is good about dinner is we get to thank God for all the blessings of food and family.

i guess they took it from the words "dine" which of course to take meals or to eat. they give importance to dinner as everyone is already in the house to take the meals, unlike breakfast and lunch that everyone is out and the whole family are seldom eat together since they have their job or other go to school. it become special than any other meals coz thats the time that the whole family will dine together and talk together about what happened on that day.

Wow thanks for the input. I never know what the actual dinner means, that is why I got quite confused when reading novels as some ppl seems to take dinner in the afternoon :) For me, dinner is eating the evening meals so would be around 7pm ish... in the afternoon is lunch :) And later at night it became supper.. Since I love eatings the portion is mainly the same for lunch or dinner hahaha Anyways, I love taking it together with my family (it only consist of me and husband). But sometimes I will invite my brother as well to eat together with us, or once in a while our parents visit then we can all have dinner in a big family :)
