So I am a liberal-leaning moderate but I am curious to ask conservatives: Do you think Ron Paul winning the straw poll at CPAC has any meaning and if so what does it mean? I've heard Mitt Romney won it the last 3 years in a row. Also, who do you think has the best shot at winning the republican primary in 2012?

I am a Democrat, and I really like Ron Paul's stance on a lot of things. I think that he is a very intelligent man, and has many great idea (one of which is legalize pot). The problem is that he is not someone that the party can control, and he won't do what they party tells him to do. I could be wrong, but I don't even think he was on the ballot for this "straw poll". I think that is even a larger surprise than anything else.

That's kind of what I think, he is a very good candidate. There won't be anyone besides Obama running as a democrat so it would be great if the republicans could present a good candidate like him. I think he should run as an independent if he doesn't get the republican nomination. But like I've said before I really dislike the fact that he's against abortion rights. I strongly believe that a woman should have the right to choose, and if it's against their beliefs to have an abortion, that's fine. It's not really the business of the government.

X, that would be a very difficult vote for me. I think the big thing would be who is VP would be, and if he pulls a McCain and moves to the right to get the right wing/religious nut base of the GOP. I thought a lot of McCain in the 1990's when he stood up for what he believed in, and pissed off the GOP. But, at some point if you want to become president you have to move further toward the base. This is why I think we need a viable third party so that people like Paul, and McCain can be themselves instead of what a party leadership wants them to be. If McCain would have acted like he did before Bush was elected, and had balls and left the GOP in 2000 after what Bush did to him, he could have been the spokesman for the new party. But, we all know how that happens. I don't like his stance on Abortion, but if he is true to his word and is more of a states rights man, than that won't be as much of an issue.

It was pretty heart warming to see. Ron Paul is exactly the kind of person we should be sending to washington, he is my gold standard for elected officials. I don't know how much a straw poll really means but perhaps people are waking up a little bit. In the last republican primary, Paul was demonized by his own party because of his stand on foriegn policy and the war, but he was right. People are also now starting to see how righht he is on monetary policy as well. It was a long time comming and it took a near epic crisis in this country to do it, but people are waking up to candidates like Paul now. The next few elections could well be what we have been wating for. Strike while the iron is hot folks.

I don't think Paul winning the straw poll will mean much. The RNC does not like him because he is not a controllable candidate. He is a strong candidate, I would vote for him. But he is not sexy, not Hollywood. But I think he is what this country needs. Fiscal restraint and personal responsibility.

I sure can't figure it out! How can the same group of people who gave the D1ck Cheney a standing ovation and went crazy when he made a joke about running for office again choose someone like Ron Paul in their straw poll? Paul was the only Republican in the debates I could stand and actually agreed with on some issues. It's anybody's guess at this point who has the best shot at the 2012 GOP nomination. Paul is the only one so far who doesn't scare the heck out of me! Annie

I cringed when they brought out D1ck....cried when they applauded him...and almost had a nearvous break down when he mentioned running in 2012.. So, if Ron Paul ends up throwing his hat in the ring in 2012, would you register as a republican and support him in the primaries?

Possibly unless another republican or independent comes out who I like better (which I doubt). I like Ron Paul's ideas on foreign policy and civil liberties for the most part. That would also depend if he supports breaking the monopolies big banks and insurance companies have on the market.

I don't remember what I've found somewhere about Ron Paul. I'm not sure what he stands for, so this means little to nothing to me. I kind of like Romney and Newt, and also might be interested in seeing if the new electee from Massachussets would have any following - so it's a bit early, but I know who I'm "not" voting for!

While I like Ron Paul I will have to tell you the "straw vote" means nothing. Romney has won it for years in a row...but yet he never made it past the primary. As for who has the best shot....who knows. I am going to wait and see who throws their name in the ring when the time comes. I don't support a "party". I support a candidate. So when the time comes I will pick the person I think is best for job reguardless of party. But to be honest I usually vote Republican or third party.
