When I was 14 years old I was vicously attacked by a huge German Shepherd who nearly tore my arm off. For several years I was afraid of them, then I met my husband he had a German shepherd and she was very sweet and friendly and I grew to love her. After we got married and had a dog we got a shepherd mix, who was also very sweet and loyal, and who I personally thought was just an amazing dog, unfortunately she got old and is not longer with us. About a month and a half ago we adopted a 2 year old full breed shepherd who is an American bread shepherd which is still a good sized dog, but not a huge one like some other shepherds are. She is very sweet and gentle as well. I am glad that one bad experience did not totally turn me off to the breed and that I have had the pleasure of these wonderful sweet dogs. With shepherds it is all how they are raised, they can be very aggrisive if they are raised that way, but they can be the sweetest dogs in the world if they are raised to be that way.
So what do you think of German Shepherds?

I pretty much love all dogs if they are nice. I guess I prefer small dogs because I happen to have one. He is a lot of fun and has a great personality. I love that he is able to sit on my lap when I need some love. But, I like big dogs too. All that really matters to me is their personality.

You just reminded me of when Sox would try to sit on my lap, I think she tried to sit on your lap once too. She never seemed to realize that she had gotten bigger. If she was scared about something like a thunder storm she would jump up on my lap, it was pretty funny.

I have always liked shepherds. My mother had good experiences with them, and I am sure her positive attitude rubbed off. I only was ever bitten by a cocker spaniel and I was in her face. Oh, and I was nipped by a mid sized poodle. The large dogs can do lots of damage with even just one bite. Isn't it nice that you were able to get beyond the one frightening experience and have good experiences with these very loyal dogs? Cora looks lovely and calm looking out the window in your picture.

I enjoy all dogs. Yes, I do like German Sheperds. They are very pretty and smart. Just like people a person needs to raise them to what you want out of them. I do not have any pet right now; my wife is against having any pet. I don't know why? Eventually I think she will want to have a pet, especially for protection, but probably not for companionship. We will see when that time comes. I hope you have many happy and joyious moments with your German Sheperd.

I am very sorry that your wife does not want a pet. That would make me sad. I love dogs so much. Maybe there was some trauma involved with a pet in a child. You should really try and find out what her reasons are then you can maybe work something out for the two of you.

I think they're great dogs. They can be trained to be aggressive and are often used as guard dogs in this capacity but they can also be very loving and loyal dogs. I used to babysit for a family that had a german shepherd and it would play really well with me - we'd fight and wrestle and she'd use her teeth but gently and if she got even slightly too rough I'd chide her and she'd immediately stop. She was very protective of the kids, too, keeping a good eye on them and going over to investigate if one cried for any reason.

They're certainly had an impressive and almost-iconic bearing. I remember fearing one when i was still a wee lad. Its poise and athletic abilities are amongst the best in my opinion. Their nose is also very sharp. I don't think there's any other large dog i'd get if i were to keep and buy one.

I was once bitten by a police dog, I think it was a German Shepherd, while in one of those protective suits, and man do they have teeth. I felt the bite through the suit.
Anyway, they are great dogs. Very loyal, and if you are in danger, they will certainly protect you. If you are good to your German Shepherd, your German Shepherd will be good to you. Treat the dog well, and it will be your protector for life.

All I have ever had is German Shepherds all my life. I love the dogs so much. They are very sweet and loyal and they are definitely dedicated to their families. my german shepherds are very gentle with my 5 and 2 year old, even they play rough with them. Any dog can be vicious, it all depends on how they are raised.

Hi Doll
I had a shepherd many years ago.
I moved far away for a job
so I left Smokey with my dad
and when came back 6 months later when the job was
finished Daddy begged me not to take him back.
They are wonderful dogs.
It's like pits..they get a bad rap as well.
My son has one that I am crazy about.
He is an amazing dog.
I've loaded a shot of him chilling on my bed

Hello LadyM!
I'm sorry to hear what you had to go through before. I'm very glad to hear that you didn't develop a trauma for German Shepherds though. They really are beautiful, magnificent dogs. Very loyal and loving especially to their owners. They were bred to be guard dogs, which explains their protective instinct that probably have caused one to bite you before. Anyway, this is a popular breed for a good reason. They exude a frightening but regal appearance but deep inside they are loving family companions whom you can trust to protect you in times of need.

omg! that was horrible. i, too, am afraid of german shepherds. they're like a very big animal who wanted to tear you off when they started to bark and howl. i also remember when i was, like around 6, my auntie had a german shepherd and everytime i went to their house, it's the shepherd that greets us --- with a bark. though, the dog is not harmful since it was caged, i still felt terrified everytime i hear the bark. it was as if barking inside the cave. it was too loud for me. i was always afraid of it. until now, i cant trust any dogs no matter how loyal your dog is to you.

I love German Sheperds. Especially when they are puppies and their ears are too big for their bodies. My aunt has a German Sheperd called Gustov. He was trained to be a guard dog but didnt make it cuz he has ADD(I think thats wat it is) so I guess he was too hyper for the job. However he is very lovable and loves to play. He likes to put your arm in his mouth and gently hold it. I know he is very gentle and wont bite but he does slobber a bit. He is very goofy and silly compared to the composed chow he is paired with. I love those dogs. I know there are a lot of dogs out there that can be dangerous. But it is always mans fault, not theirs.
