as christians how do you prepare yourself for the lenten season?

as followers of christ and believer of christian faith, we just started the 40 days lenten season which was started by the imposition of ashes on our forehead last Ash Wednesday. within this period of lent how do you prepare yourself during this 40 days? do you undergo fasting? or what do you do in the observance of lenten season?

as a christian we went to the church for the mass before the holy week starts and its called palaspas,many people go to the church for this,actually now a days some of people do fasting because the many of them go for vacation and enjoy the place.

i'm a christian, but i've never heard of lenten season. what is it? I don't remember it being in the bible.
