i work at an after school program and it makes me really sad to see that most kids have all these junk foods for lunch or for a snack. There are so many alternatives that parents can buy for there kids to have a healthy and enjoyable lunch. infact today it really annoyed me that this one little girl had chips and candy for lunch "perpared" by her mother...(her mother is a registered nurse, why in the world is her daughter having the most unhealthiest lunches?)

this is why i think schools should actually make sure the kids try in P.E. It should be more than just once a day, like in a lot of elementary schools. Also, the school lunches should be healthier too. Some schools are selling cookies, pop, donuts... and i think most mom's are falling much too easily for those sad faces that some kids pull off.

yes!! i do think P.E class should be everyday and schools should stop selling junk foods. And its a little understandable that moms are on the go and dont have time to perpare a healthier snacks, but in the long run the parents are stuck with there child health issues.

Definitely school lunches should be much better than most of the ones I've seen or heard of. And vending machines in school I don't think should sell soda or sugary snacks. Parents cannot control what kids buy at school, but if it isn't available then you can count on them making a healthy choice. I have to admit myself when I was in high school would go to the student lounge with my friends every day and buy a chocolate cream pie and a big pink lemonade. They shouldn't have even been selling such crap....lol

i started working when i was 16 and my parents were very strict on junk food our cereals were rasian brand and no white bread only wheat and no soda only fruit juices.. so when i realized my parents couldnt control or saw what i could buy and it was my own money i was really bad i bought all the junk foods that caught my eye, thank god i didnt blow up but now i understand why they avoided junk food. im not fat im healthy and i have healthy teeth!! 5yr olds are already having root canals and crowns i think that ridiculous . its disturbing to see a 5 yr old with metal around there teeth.

I know that my comments are back from the old days, but when I went to school (I so hate sounding like my mother) lunches that were sold were nutritious and we did have p.e. every day. At the time, I hated p.e. but it did get us all out to exercise every day and with the budget cuts in schools, I think that this is something that fell by the wayside. We are a fast food processed food society and for the oen of the first times in history we are sentencing our children to a life span that is shorter than ours is because we are poisoning them with the foods that they eat and not providing them with the amount that they need to live a healthy lifestyle. I am stunned by your story of a registered nurse providing her child with a lunch of chips and candy. Of all people who should know better!!!!!

I am so sorry but making a sixteen year old responsible for packing the lunch of a five year old? I grew up in a household with two working parents (long before that was fashionable) and my Mom made all of our lunches in the evening after dinner and we just grabbed our lunch bag when we left. This is exactly the kind of lunch that I would have packed for myself when I was 16. Parents want to be parents but don't want the responsbility of being a parent. Very sad. I've read that the arteries of children today are quite the same as the arteries of 45 year olds.,,all due to our fast food and processed food diets. We cannot bring children into this world if we are not prepared to teach them everything that they need to know to survive in this world and that includes a healthy lifestyle. So so sad.

i did also find out that the mother leaves very early for work and leaves the 5yr old with her older brother who is 16 and makes him responsible for packing her lunch. but to me thats no excuse the 16yr old is a kid himself ugh some parents these days are slacking.

Its not the kids fault that they are obese! Their parents are raising them to be obese,(just like their parents!)The parents don't care enough to change the diets of their children (because to do it the parents have to eat healthy too!)
To change this trend the kids have to be taught how to eat, and as their parents aren't doing it the schools will have to.

Obesity in children is very common these day and I feel that parents are not taking serious actions against this. It is difficult to find time for parents to avoid all junk food when both of the parents are working. Mostly, they keep some junk food for the kid when the kid comes home after school. The junk food contributes to obesity a lot.

It's definitely become a massive public health issue, and it's costing developed countries billions of dollars yearly.
People don't understand the risks nor the benefits of not regrurlary participating in physical activity, and really.. something needs to be done, drastic measures need to be taken, and it should have been done along time ago.
