How could that serve us? In what was could that be valuable to Johnny? It could take a lot to make the whole world take an over all view of positivity! Could we have saved him instead? Could we have jumped with him? The water looked deep enough, could it have been a trick of the light.

to my understanding, this is the difference between can and could
you use "Can" for future. for example
he can do this - you are talking about time after now that he can do this.
you use could for past or present. for example:
he could not win the game - you are saying that when he played the game he did not win. he did not win due to any reason, so you say he "could not" win
