Earnings are based on our activity and the quality of our posts.
A referral will earn the same as a user who has no referral. You will then earn 25% of your referral's participation earnings on top of what they earn. It is not deducted from their own earnings but is a bonus for you.

Stars are the result of how others have rated your posts.
Your earnings are affected by the value of your star.
It is explained here:

Haribol was merely stating that a referral who participates (an active referral) will earn you money where an inactive referral will earn you nothing.

In theory it seems kind of impossible, but there is a similar story with two of my own referrals. They both joined under me, responded to lots of discussions and also created some, but they've received much less money than they have earned. It's kind of strange, because I have no problem with getting my earnings.

Well, let's say each of them has responded to 40 discussions and received like 20 answers to their own discussions, but all they have received is like 0.15 each. They should have been awarded more money. That's what I mean.

no, they earned the same coz once your referral register using your link they are considered to be direct also in their own way. good thing is you will earn extra from the total earnings they have but it will not be deducted to them.
