There is alittle black QH gelding at the stable I work at. He is only 8 but when he sees his pasture mate in heat he acts like a stud! Mico, the gelding, goes studly when the Arab mare Sera pees in front of him! Then Mico will snife her and hump her! Sera will stand for him and everything! I have seen other geldings in the past do this but not in a long time! Mico and Sera are very talkative when she is in her heat cycle!

maybe he was gelded late? I knew a gelding who would act studly at times, but never was allowed with a mare in heat - Periscope was his name, a beautiful bay with a fine star and a white hind sock and he'd get all cresty and studly when there were mares in heat around, but they didn't do any inviting things with him (there were actual stallions around, just they weren't getting bred.)

Mico could of been gelded late. I will ask his owner when I see her again. When the mare Sera was put out with him we had no idea he'd act like that! Sera's owner isn't surprised her acts like she does! She has done it around other geldings in the past. We have no stallions at the stable. have not in a very long time.

One of the TB geldings at the farm we work at does that too. He's also around 8 years old. His paddock mate Jackie will stand for him and everything just like you mentioned. It's quite comical because Buster tries but just doesn't quit know what he's doing so he ends up giving up rather quickly and just walking around in a huff LOL! I'm not sure exactly when he was gelded but I think he might have been a little bit older maybe 4 or so. He's never been bred I think it's just instict really.

I will have to ask Mico's owner when he was gelded. I really don't know if he was gelded late or not. It could be instinct, too. It is comical with Mico and Sera because both have winter blankets on and it doesn't stop Mico from trying!

Yes some geldings are just like that. it could be maybe that he was gelded at an older age. like maybe he was 5 or so or maybe because he has even bred mares before? Even if he hasnt and was gelded young this is still a likely scenario as I said some geldings are just like that it could be in their blood. As for the mare peeing in front of him, well sure mares will due that in front of any horse even other mares when they are in heat. i havea mare that will go stand over my another mare in the paddock with her tail up when she in heat and squeal at her. Its all just natural. I wouldnt worry about it as long as nobody gets hurt.

I don't know when Mico was gelded. I don't know if he was used a stud before he was gelded. It could just be in his blood! I'll ask his owner when I see her. I have seen other mares pee in front of other mares and other geldings when in heat. It has been along time since I saw a gelding act so studly when a mare is in heat!

Yes that would be great if you could get the informarion on him to know for sure. Those are the only things I can really think of for a gelding doing that. I have seen this behavior before but not to often. I only really see it in the younger ones or like I said ones that have been gelded recently or late in life. Hope you find your answer though and take care.

Some geldigs still act like studs. We used to use a gelding to tease our mares to see if they were in season because he would act more like a stud the the actual studs themselves. Whenever any mare walked by his stall he would hoot and hollar.

I know some geldings still act like studs. I never heard of a studly acting gelding being used as a teaser when mates are in heat! Very interesting!
