Kennel Cough

OMG! I never knew.. When I first got my pup and she seen the vet, we went through the different vaccinations. Since I wouldn't be leaving my dog at a kennel, a day care nor dropping her at the groomers, I opted to not get the vaccination for kennel cough. Well today & yesterday, I am hearing people claiming that dogs can pick up kennel cough simply from sniffing other dogs pee spots and other areas of the doggie parks. I am alarmed and on high alert now. The vet knows my dog goes to the doggie parks and has not said anything to me. When she got her shots this year, the kennel cough vaccination was not mentioned. We are not due to be back at the vet for another few months now since we moved the gland extractions up to every three months now. She wont be back to see the vet until the end of April. Meanwhile she is out walking, passing other dogs areas, at least four times a day. I am thinking that I ought to make a special vet visit so to vaccinate my pup for kennel cough. I would be devastated if she got sick! I opted out of the vaccination for the reasons that I did, when I did because I really didn't think she would need it but I didn't know how easily that the kennel cough could be contracted. I was trying to spare her from something that I am not sure about where I stand with them. Re: Vaccinations. I am for them but against them. How about you? What's your take on kennel cough and the vaccination for it? Do you get it for your dog? Does your dog frequent the groomers and or the doggie parks? Have you vaccinated your dog? My dog doesn't go to kennels, nor the groomer and hasn't traveled out of the country, yet. Is this something that I should be this concerned about now? I may just call the vet in the morning.

Yes I have my 2 chihuahua's vaccinated yearly. Mostly they don't go anywhere outside of our yard unless we go on vacation. Even when a dog stays in your own yard there is a risk of contacting kennel cough from a dog that came into your yard. Or you could track it in on your shoes. I would rather be safe than sorry. Especially now while the economy is so bad...many people aren't vaccinating their pets due to the cost. Petco is a nationwide pet store that has clinics. I don't know where you live but here is a link so you can find out if there is one in your area. http://www.petco.com/petco_Page_PC_veterinaryservices_Nav_132.aspx

Thank you for this response. Good point about the current economy, therefore less people vaccinating their pets. I am a bit worried. My pup goes everywhere with me. We walk four times a day and she sniffs hot spots, where other dogs have been. She has never been vaccinated for kennel cough because I knew I would never leave her at daycare or in a kennel. Funny, since prior to my owning her, she spend weeks at a time in day cares. Sad. She is two and we will be checking with the vet, likely today but can not vaccinate yet because I'd rather her own vet does it and she and I are not at home right now. We don't have a Petco in the area I am currently but are many vets around. One thing I am thankful for is that my pup is healthy and strong. This is not to say that we wont be vaccinating her for kennel cough.

We worry so much about our fur baby, dont we EvrWonder? Mine is vaccinated for everything. He doesnt go to groomers or day care or public parks or anywhere near other dogs.....I dont let him sniff anything when we go for walks on the street. He spends his play time in our fenced backyard and hubby or I are always there to watch. (Im so happy I didnt have kids, Id drive them crazy lol) We go to the vet about every 2-3 months for that gland thing. We do his nails with a special machine (damn I forgot the name, it files the nails and its not painful) I wash my dog myself.....and I have a bath at the same time haha! I know they can get kennel cough just about anywhere so thats why we had him vaccinated...just in case. Maybe its not too late for you to go ASAP?

Hi Magical, yes we do. My precious little pup. I'd be horrified if she caught anything! When I first got my pup, she still needed her puppy three. We talked about kennel cough and since I knew I wouldn't be leaving her in daycare or a kennel, I opted out of it. No one told me about the ease of catching Kennel Cough simply from going to the doggie parks, which she frequents, daily. When we are at home, she had much more secluded acreage to roam on, where not many other dogs, frequent since it is private property. Right now, we are walking four times a day, she sniffs other dog spots and we do go to the local dog park. I am a little concerned. Thankfully she is healthy and strong but I will be contacting the vet so to get her vaccinated for kennel cough also. I am surprised that the vet did not educate me on this as my fellow MyLotters have and are. I learned this by accident, while walking at the dog park. Go figure. Lol I didn't have kids either. My pup is my baby. I hear my family say often that it is a good thing that I didn't have kids. I tend to spoil her, a bit but she knows who her leader is all the time, none the less. I tell them that she is not spoiled but special. lol. Roxy has a bath once a week with natural dog shampoo/conditioner. It is oatmeal and vanilla. I did not know that dogs could catch kennel cough from just about anywhere. It is not too late to go to the vet and in fact, we are scheduled for a walk in a few minutes and we can easily walk past the local vet so to get her vaccinated. Thank you for your response.
