Wordpress Blog & installing?

I'm new to Wordpress, and so I started a blog but I'm seeing in different places about "installing wordpress" - I'm a little bit confused on this one, I thought it was an online blog, not a software download...

WordPress is both the blogging software and the blogging platform at WordPress.com. When you read "install WordPress", that is the free blogging software. When read about the free blog at WordPress.com, that is the blog.
