A strange fruit I would say! Would you consider cucumber a fruit in the usual sense, that is, the way mango is a fruit? Many refer to it as a salad item/vegetable though botanically it is a fruit. Taken after a heavy meal it helps in digestion. It also helps to reduce bouts of stomach due to acidity.

Hello Sir Nice to have you comment on cucumber. A question: There is a saying that it is better NOT to eat cucumber on an empty stomach because a cucumber does not gets digested itself but helps to digest other food (when taken after a meal). Is this true?

i like cucumber as its readily available and can be eaten raw. when the weather its hazy, we are advised to eat more cucumbers. when a sore throat is coming , i was told by my friend that eating sliced cucumbers marinated wuth salt will drive away the sore throat before it caught hold of us. to me, i always think cucumber is a vegetable. is it so.

No Grace! Actually cucumber is a fruit botanically but in the kitchen we generally refer to it as a vegetable. What's in a name anyway? A cucumber is a cucumber is a cucumber.............. and they are extremely healthy. And by the way, it also aids in digestion especially after a heavy meal......... and hence the idea of it as an integral part of salad.

Hi, vutum6887. I never knew a cucumber to be a fruit. It tastes bitter just like a vegetable. It is very healthy to eat. I love eating them on a salad or by itself with some salt and pepper on it.

A cucumber is not generally bitter. In fact it is, kind of bland, most refreshing. There is a way of cutting a cucumber to avoid the spreading of the bitterness, if at all. Before de-skinning cut off a small transverse slice from each end and with a rotational motion, rub it over the main body (the transverse cut zone) I mean. I dont know if i have been able to make myself clear.

It's a very strange fruit, the only one I know that have 3 names depending of its size : less than 2 inches long it's a cornichon, between 2 and 6 a gherkin, and the mature fruit is called a cucumber. I like pickled cornichons.

Most interesting information. But are they all of the same plant differing only in size?

Hi vutum, Technically, cucumber is a fruit, it developed from the ovary of a flower. It is a salad item as well. It can be eaten plain, served with a little salt and vinegar, or with sugar. It can be used to sooth tired eyes and help in making eye bags less prominent. From cucumbers, we can obtain a lot of health benefits. Have a nice day, vutum.
