I have been diagnosed with high blood cholesterol. I have just called my family general practitioner for the results. It seems that I have high blood cholesterol and asked me to pick the results on Friday. Is it something to worry about? What type of diet should I be on? What are the food that I must avoid? Do you have high blood cholesterol? What do you do to control it?

I had high cholesterol and was eating pretty much what I should have been at the time--lots of raw veggies and fruits and mostly tuna though I did splurge for an occasional burger and steak. Even so it was high.
What really helped was meditation, praying the rosary and church services. It helped me relax and not worry. The worry and anxiety seems to be the greatest reason for my high cholesterol.
You need a good diet that consists of raw fruit and veggies if possible for you, frozen veggies are good too, but when people cook them they like to salt and flavor with fat and salt laden substances. That is a no-no. Fat is your bodies greatest enemy for high cholesterol.
But, there are good fats and bad ones. You need to eat good fat that will help to lower your cholesterol levels. Most nuts are good for you and are a good source of protein.
Limit red meats and if possible get them out of your diet completely. Red meat is very high in bad fat. When your cholesterol goes down to a good level, you can add the meat again but in moderation like once a month or so, so it will not affect your cholesterol levels.
Exercise--take daily walks, go to the gym, whatever suits you. Exercise is proven to help lower cholesterol.
Meditate--at least 20 minutes a day, meditate on something such as bible scripture that will give you peace, pray, sing spiritual songs, whatever gets you in touch with your higher power.
Why is it my posts always end up being mini-novels?

LDL is 5.71 when it should be below 3.88. Total cholesterol is 7.42 while it should be up to 5.

Fried foods are the worst for cholesterol. I would suggest white grape juice to help you lower it. Also a lot of fiber. White grape juice actually has an acidic affect that can help. I have known people to take medicine but if there is anyway to avoid that, I think I would. Good luck and take care.

Well, we all could give you tons of advice but the doctor will probably go over all that information when you get your test results Friday. He would know more about what you can and can't have since everyone is different. You could have other problems that prevent you from eating certain foods that others with High blood Cholesterol can eat. But to name a few..I here Cheerios,Oatmeal work great.Good luck and Hope you get that down to a reasonable level soon.

yes, I have high cholesterol. I am on medication for it. I did research on the internet. I found that changing my diet and exercising will help alone with the meds that I take. One of the things that cause high cholesterol is saturated fats. You will have to start reading the labels before purchasing items, that will help a lot.
My advice is to do some research, you can find a lot of information on high cholesterol that way.

It has to do with fat in your diet as I understand it.
Things like smoking can make it worse because that slows your blood flow down even more.
Exercise helps and also avoiding chocolate and fried or fatty foods.
I am sure the doctor must have guide lines on a fact sheet.

He told me to be aware of fatty foods such as diary ones. He did not banned them but just to be cautious

hi ronaldinu yes you need to change your eating habits and concentrate on lowering the amounts of saturated and trans fats that you eat., cut back to low on fats, and keep sugar intake down to a minimum too. just read the labels on food and keep an eye out for anything has transfat
'or a lot of fat grams in it. keep fat low and dont eat saturated or tansfat at all.load up on fruits and veggies, lean meats, whole grain bread and cereals. watch the calories but most important watch the fat
intake every day.

Hey ronaldinu! I have had high blood pressure now for over
20 years! It can be controlled with medication and with watching
what you eat! I wasn't able to control it with watching my
diet so I have unfortunately been on medication for at least
15 years or more! You have to not eat things that are high in
cholesterol like cheese, fatty foods! Your doctor will tell
you what kind of diet you need to be on! Don't worry! Most
times you can control your cholesterol by diet. It is only
if the numbers are very high and stay that way that you have
to be concerned and if you have a family history of high
cholesterol which I do! My grandparents and my parents both
had the same problem, so for me it was genetic too!

High cholesterol is more common than a lot of people think. I've had high cholesteral since was in my early 20's. Sometimes it comes on later in life because of diet and less excersize, but there is a genetic factor in there too that a lot of people miss.
I don't eat a lot of red meats, dont' eat fried foods, breads, processed foods (ready made) I'm not over weight, I'm active and still my cholesteral is high; however, everyone in my family has high cholesterol. My parents are on medication for it just as my other siblings.
There are a lot of suggestions to monitor it without medications according to diet and excersize, but since I'm already doing that I read up on the benefits of apple cider vinegar. I drink 2 teaspoons a day and have not been on medication for it in over 2 years.
The vinegar helps your body separate the good part of your foods from the bad. It will not help raise your good cholesterol, but it will help you lower your bad cholesterol. Everyone has to do what is right for them. I know when taking medication for it I always felt sick, tired and had sore muscles. It didn't matter what they put me on it was all the same side effects.
Since drinking the vinegar, I get sick less often, have more energy and my cholesterol is at an all time low and staying there. It might not work for everyone, but it sure has worked for me.

I have my mother in law who is really obese but does not have bad cholesterol. While my father in law is thin and has bad cholesterol. So I do agree that it does not have to do with weight but its more of a genetic factor as you said.

I was just listening to the radio and their topic was all about achieving good health. What was pointed out clearly is our lifestyle. Lifestyle when it comes to anything we take inside our mouth.
I guess this will serve as a very potent message to you and to our that we should focus on eating and having a healthy diet. More fruits and vegetable and no more smoking and drinking. We should also opt for a low salt, low fat diet.
Anyone diagnosed with high blood cholesterol or any bad diagnosis will definitely bring us down. We should get on ourselves and focus on making a commitment to have a good eating habit.

High blood cholesterol is a result of eating lots of food high in animals fats. This cholesterol can cause illnesses such as atherosclerosis which affect the arteries. A good way to reduce your cholesterol levels are to eat food that can filter cholesterol out of the blood. These are mainly plant-based oils. These are generally the ones that are best for you and animal fats are the ones tht give you bad cholesterol. :]

Having high blood cholestrol is not normal. Weather it is cause of worry can be said only after u reveal the exact level, i think your family physician will tell u.
Yes i am having marginal high Blood cholesterol. As a precaution i have reduced oily food, fatty food, junk food, i take food items having more fibre. I also do regular exercise and i practice different pranayam and yoga. Practicing pranayam and yoga has helped me a lot in reducing cholesterol level, and from marginally high now i am having it withing prescribed limit.
Take Care.
