Could has 2 possible meanings: able to; having a choice. You could pick up that stone. (you are able to pick up that stone.) You could pick up that stone. (its your choice to pick up the stone, or not) all depends on the tone of voice that is being used.

We all know that "could" is an auxiliary word. Its present tense is can it indicates the ability to perform an action or the inability not to perform the action at the particular situation Example: In good olden days my Grandma could cover up 5 km in 20 minutes. By this phrase it is presumed that now she is not able to. Example 2 : After five days journey, when I reached home I could not resume my work for all my energy was exhausted
