To buy or not to buy?

I love to buy bags, shoes and gadgets! I'm not really a shoppaholic nor a fashionista, 'coz I'm actually living a simple life. I just love collecting those three "important" items. There's one thing I've been dreaming of having... a blackberry! My mobile phone's still doing good (it's a birthday present from my girl friends) and I'm still loving it! But There's just this "longing" for blackberry. Some say it's a luxury, others say it's okay to buy one (to pamper myself)...I say, it's a luxury 'coz I don't really need a new one! I just wanna have it, period! But on second thoughts, I can use the money to buy necessary stuff, don't you think? Hmmm... let me think... What about you? Is there something you want to buy just for the sake of having it or because you really need it?

I normally think thoroughly before I purchase anything especially if the item is a little expensive. If i really like the item, I would save or do some part time jobs to buy the item..

Saving up or doing part time jobs are really good ways before deciding to purchase anything. I do them sometimes, too, vlws123. Thanks for sharing!

After doing so, I feel a sense of satisfaction because I spent what I have earned. :)

nope, i am pretty frugal when it comes to buying. i seldom buy anything unless i need it (unless it is a craft item!) for most things, i shop at thrift stores (you never know what you will find there!)

I'm thrifty, too, especially if the stuff I want costs a lot! I usually go to thrift stores, and yes to "hand-me-down-items" shops! Thanks for sharing! Enjoy mylotting!

When I was younger, I bought just about everything I wanted. Now I'm in the downsizing mode and selling just about everything I thought I wanted when I was younger.

That is because we are human. We have unlimited wants.. as for me my addiction is also buying shoes and clothes especially when there is the red tag (on sale!) on it. I kept telling myself that I will never buy clothes anymore this year because I already have more than enough to wear. But then.. I always ended up carrying a bag from my favorite shop.. ESPRIT.

It is all up to you if you are going to purchase it or not. A few things you need to remember. One, if you need to save up for something important then do not buy it for now. Second, if you do not have like emergency funds for like a 12 month period, it would be best to save up first then buy stuff later on. You'll never know what will happen this year or the next coming years. But if you have all the money and just like to splurge on one thing then go ahead.

You sound like a good friend of mine who's really good at handling money. I agree with you on saving up first then buying important stuff later on. Thanks for the advice, sublime03.

i used be like that before, buy things i want since my money is just mine and dont have any responsibility in life. then all of a sudden everything change. my laptop, jewelries and other expensive gadgets even money was gone coz someone took them inside my room. and on the same year, i lost my job and got prgnant then the guy also left me. last year was my worst year for me. they said its because of my birthday. my birthday actually is september 09, and last year is 2009 that make 09/09/09 which can also be read upside down as 666. the worst of the worst year for me. i know some dont believe it but i do now coz of what happened to me. my sister used to tell me before to put my money in bank and save it than buy things pecially if i dont really need it, those gadgets, bags and shoes, signature dresses and etc. and now i just realize it. only if i save the money then perhaps i cn already start a business of my own and have a lot of money where i can buy more things i want at least i already have stable income from business. but i didnt listen to my sis before.

I can feel you, homeshoppers, 'coz I lost some valuable stuffs too to some not nice people. What happened to you for sure have reasons we may not understand, but just remember, Someone's watching over you/us and will provide for you/us in any way. So, let's do this together... save up money and start a business! Good luck in whatever business you'll gonna do!

There are somes thing I have bought only being used several times. When I go shopping,I can't help buying some things out of my original list.Because I think them will be useful in my life.So I buy something because I think I will use it in the future. Not be attracted by a luxury,or you will regret. This is what I live by.

I agree with you, historydog, to not be attracted by luxurious stuff or you'll regret it. I apply it sometimes but negate it most of the times, lol! Thaks for the advice!

I don't have a lot of money so I only buy things when it is really necessary. If I want to buy something that I just want, I need to save for it first. Heck it took me 3 months just to get myself an iphone.

When I was just starting my job, I really needed a laptop, so I saved up money to have it. And you know what, it took me 3 months too to buy it and it cost quite a lot because it was a new model. I don't have have regrets, anyway, coz it's been serving me for almost 6 years. Happy mylotting nocturn98!

If you really look deep into the heart of the subject you'll see that there is no point of buying anything or possessing an asset because you are not going to take anything with us after we pass away. But the crude fact is that our demand grows with the position we hold either in society or at workplace and it comes from the conception of status. If we see a beautiful flower on some tree,we wish that we'd have a tree like that in our garden.Do you call it a luxury?May be,because without the tree in your garden you have already passed so long without the knowledge that such a kind of tree may ever exist. So it depends how you want to define your need.Based on that you decide whether to buy something.

to understand objectives to buy or not to buy are first we need to understand how their values and goals affect their buying habits. second is gain and understanding of basic economics, including the infulence of supply, demand, and the price of goods and services. the third thing is gain experiance in comparing and selecting product in the marketplace that may or may not include the use of credit and the forth is to understand their rights and responsibilites as consumers.

I used to be like that, and i buy whatever I want, but then one day I realized how important money is and that I can't buy everything i want. That I should only buy the ones I Need. I realized that I could use the money to buy something more useful ans is really needed. For you case, I think you should not fall for your feeling of wanting that thing. You see new gadgets come everyday and soon that Blackberry will be off the fad, and then what? you'll buy another one which is on the fad, won't it be a waste of money?
• Thailand
26 Feb 10
You're actually right, Mike4me, that new gadgets rise every now and then. The Blackberry thing will soon fade away...hopefully, my desire to have one will fade away, too, lol! Thanks for the advice!

Blackberry mobiles are quite expensive not because they are luxury phones its because they have blackberry services i.e. they can push all the mails from your connected email account directly to ur blackberry so the sets compromise on lots of features that other sets posses at the price point.....so if u really require the blackberry service (which is also quite expensive as for a student like me) than u may buy a blackberry otherwise go for nokia e 72 it looks and feels much better....
